Hi all, I was wondering if 27 is too old to start amateur boxing? I just started going to a new place this week and love it. I boxed a little when I was 10-11 years old (just training and sparring, nothing too intense).
Also, how does one obtain a pro license. Is there a certain amount of fights you must complete?
Thanks
I'm 26 and about to start fighting. it's good to see how encouraging everyone is. one thing i have noticed, though... two years ago i was 152 lbs, and it didnt take all that much ridiculous work, or time, to get there. Now, it seems as though my metabolism has taken a nose dive. i started working out pretty intensely 3 months ago, i am in good shape, i can run 10 miles pretty easily, swim for 2 hours straight, do lots' pushups and pullups, but cant seem to get below 175... and i dont have even close to a big enough swing to bang at 175lbs. when i started 3 months ago i was 192, lost the initial 15 pounds in 2 weeks, but nothing since then, really. man, gettin older blows.
Smoking fucks your stamina, whether it's weed or tobacco. Furthermore weed will have an atrocious effect on your motivation. If smoking weed is that important to you then don't bother boxing.
Exactly, If one is serious about getting into the fight game and having a go, you shouldn't even be drinking soda. Even at am level, everything thing counts in boxing.
According to wikipedia Earnie Shavers started boxing at 22 and won his first amateur match within 2 weeks of starting by KO. He did hit hard as hell though
The earlier you start, the earlier you finish. If you start at 27, in my opinion you will learn faster than if you started at 17 which could make up for the late start.
It really depends how much you put into it, if you dedicated your life to it and you have real talent, you could be a champion.
i'm 23 and i am going to pick it up in the new year. I am running right now to get in shape so i dont do in the gym. I am hoping to go pro one day and my goal is to at leat make 100 Gs fighting. Anyways, what the policy on weed smoking? I am a fucking huge pothead and I dont think I would stop unless I have to. do the drug tests they administer look for weed? if so what is the penalty for a positive marijuana piss test?

That's a good idea. I may do that. Yes I am very serious. I feel closer to my grandfather when training (he passed many years ago). He wanted me to box when I was growing up, instead of playing basketball etc. Probably should have listened to him, I sucked at baseketball :D
Thanks for the replies guys. I am fairly decent shape, 6'1 175lbs which I think would put me in the light heavyweight? I need to do more cardio work however. How important is weight lifting in the amateurs? I have decent strength, nothing spectacular.
How long should I wait before doing my first fight? I do have *some* boxing background. My grandfather was a boxer in the Philippines and taught me when I was 10 years old. I never fought in a sanctioned event (plenty of sparring and lots of street fighting though).
Thanks
if you're really serious about this, you should document your "journey" up untill your first amateur fight. it would be awesome to see you progress up untill your ultimate goal.

I see that you will bring pride back to the squared circle. Even the bums will give you a run.........Get a job..........Rockin':boxing:
HEEEY!! lol. i got a job. a good one too. i've always had a job since I was 18. cocksucking motherfucker. I love boxing as much as anybody and I would not shame the boxing in any way. Imma be fighting bums, but I will be professional about it. thats going to be me in a few years winning that NABFOABW title and bringing it back to Miami. :owned:
Fight 'cause you love it, not straight for the cash. A hundred G's, good luck kid.
And yes, they will test you for drugs including weed, especially when your rolling in your pro debut.
About going pro, beat the amatuers first. If you can do that then maybe roll with the pros. Just dont expect a cake walk in either.......Rockin':boxing:
well i aint going to go pro unless a trainer tells me i am good enough. i am all about learning. i'll trian for 3 or 4 years b4 my first pro fight if i have to.
my goal is to make 100 Gs. after that, my new goal would be to make another 100 Gs.
damn i love to smoke but if i have to quit cuz I'll get punished for a dirty test I'll do it. Its always good to take a break. maybe that Conte motherfucker got a weed mask for drug tests. lol.
who said it was going to be a cake walk? if it was easy, it wouldnt be worth it. Besides Imma fight cab drivers, bus drivers, truck drivers, fry cooks, cops, and firemen. I would love to fight a cop. hell, if i go on a winning streak against a bunch of bum police men, I'll call myself Internal Affairs. Dont make no mistake about it, Imma fight me a bunch of bums.

Definitely not too old. If you have 3 to 4 hours a day to devote to it you could achieve something great, didn't Derrick Jefferson start in his mid / late 20's? Not that he was the be-all end-all but he did have a couple 6 figure purses and a million dollar B.A.D. fight on HBO iirc.

Aslong as you're fit and healthier you're never too old in my eyes.
Go for it mate.
