In a recent interview fully posted on Boxing Scene, Bernard Hopkins has laid down the gauntlet for a possible fight with Joe Calzaghe:
"...
Hopkins said that he's only willing to do the fight with Calzaghe if it's on America soil, and if the money is a 60-40 split in his favor. He refuses to do a 50-50 split."
-----------------------
NOW, this is reminisent of how Hopkins has handled past inquiries by Calzaghe's camp for a fight, by making deal breaking demands.
This should make it clear that Hopkins isn't exactly jumping up and down to get in the ring with Calzaghe, even at this point in his career. IMO he's lucky Calzaghe even gave him another chance for one last big payday before shuffling off to the retirement home.
I think it would be funny as hell, if Calzaghe accepted this insulting offer and beat Hopkins' ass.
It all depends on your numbers first you said the bare bones for a calzaghe ticket was £120, then you admitted you saw tickets for around £60, to be honest i think i saw people who claimed they were going for about £50 but whatever.
Going on your premise it can go both ways: you had to make the average in your estimate £120 because you knew otherwise you numbers wouldnt add add up.
here an example, if we call the average £100 a ticket. which is
50,000 x 100= 5 million pounds
Then do 200,000 by the 54.99 price for a top ppv in america (lets call it $55)
200,000 x 55 = 11 Million Dollars, which is around £5.5 million pounds.
Thats the premise i was working on.
Now that makes the PPV sales more valuble but in the end i would be suprised if the gate money just beat the PPV numbers in this case, However as i said in the 1st post, 200,00 pay per view sales are average at best, mayweather did 400,000 with Judah and that wasnt a big deal, compare that money to your 50,000 gate sales, lol.
Now with that in mind.
Are you sure gate money= more than PPV money which is what i believe you said earlier?
:lol1:
Why is it relevant? What's the problem with PPV broadcast from Wales? No difference.
yes and your initial post stated that 50k seats was elss than 200k ppv. do you agree you are wrong?

Hopkins deserves the bigger cut. 60/40 is fair considering its bernard hopkins. A hopkins fight is only gonna make calzaghe's name huge win or lose.Love him or hate him its B-hop were talking about here.Hell if calzaghe wanted him that bad he would be all over it. Hell 70/30 is okay to.
When you talk about money you add on the PPV sales, this is how boxing works.
Fighters get some money PLUS PPV SALES, now.
If your thinking that i am suggesting Bernard Hopkins only gets PPV money and nothing else, then you are in need of serious help.
The same way if you are implying the only way a fight makes money is through PPV alone, then you would also need serious help.
Now, heres an example. Floyd Mayweather made 8 million dollars for baldomir before the PPV money.
The casino's spend MILLIONS on a fight to have it staged there as they make the money back through the masses of people, who book expenisive hotels and spend thousands over the weekend
The seats at some of the big fights are worth THOUSANDS not £120.
And to add to that, 200,000 is average numbers for a big name,
Now you take the 200,000 PPV sales and add them on the rest of the money the fighters/fight makes, and thats why is the USA the place to fight.
Now, are you still saying Setanta sports and BBC can match that?
To finish off, even the IDIOT STEVE BUNTZ said in an interview with the man himself Joe calzaghe NEXT TO HIM, the Hopkins fights would make loads more money for calzaghe IN AMERICA than ever before.
He said two things.
PPV money would go through the roof, and possible casino money.
Thank you.
:lol1:

Yes...of course I said "may". Until the results of some marketing analysis is released or until Cal's next fight, we won't know.
I've listened to all the arguments here. It's still my opinion that a 60-40 split in favor of Bernard and in America or no fight indicates that Bernard would just as soon not have to fight Calzaghe. I think it would be funny as hell if Joe indicated that he would accept that insulting offer. See what Bernard pulls next.
If that happens and Bernard backs out you have every right to call him a bitch. And you won't hear me argue anything to the contrary. Both fighters have been stubborn with negotiations in the past, and been labelled as duckers. Both to Roy Jones Jr.
Frankly, I'd like to see my boy Hopkins go to Wales and beat Joe in a street fight for 12 rounds using his typical tactics and win a decision. I'd pay double for that.
Maybe, you even said "may". So we'll just have to wait and see on that one, doesn't change the fact that Hopkins has been on PPV for years. And I know the fight against Wright sucked, but prior to that on PPV he had Tarver and that was a brilliant fucking performance in my eyes against the #1 regarded Light Heavy in the World.

The bottom line is this : Joe needs this fight more than Calzaghe, for his Worldwide legacy. He can retire now and be an all time great in the history of British boxing, and a legend in the Welsh community. But Worldwide he'll be seen as "that guy". Hopkins doesn't need Calzaghe, because his legacy is intact and he can easily find someone else who wants to fight him.
so are you wrong about 50k seats is less than 200k ppv in your estimation? YES.
calzaghe aint ppv because he aitn american. it is his or frank warrens fault for not going to america. maybe hopkins did price himself out 4 years ago who knows?
if joe was born in america he would get much more hype than pavlik. that is my opinion. if calzaghe was american then i think he would already get the opportunities to fight bigger names. he would be world famous althoguh perhaps with 2 or 3 losses.
joe has only just gone on hbo. it was with the bika fight which was shit.
joe vs lacy was on showtime which aint as good as hbo. the manfredo fight was a joke that i didnt want for joe but if it did get some exposure then good for him.

I think the point is that Calzaghe may NOW be PPV material.

That is the most ludacris shit I've ever read. Last time I checked huge PPV stars Miguel Cotto, Felix Trinidad, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera and Manny Pacquiao weren't Americans either.
Face it, Calzaghe isn't PPV because nobody fucking knows him. It's a sad fact because Joe is one hell of a gifted fighter and athlete, but he has no career defining performances aside from Lacy and Kessler (two guys the public didn't even know existed), that would make him PPV material.

yeah in that context i meant if he was american born he would be more famous in america. :) i mean how many welsh peopel live in america :p
i mean you have lots of immigrants in america that buy ppv's too i assume. i may be wrong on that. those guys have trained in america and so on too.
Well, I don't think Joe needs Bernard to cement his legacy. Beating Bernard would certainly help, but Joe doesn't have to have Hopkins on his resume to do it. Undefeated champ for 10+ years speaks for itself.
Level of competition my friend. Hopkins would not be where he's at today if not for Tito, Oscar, Tarver and Winky. Because even though both had sucessful defenses against solid opponets like a Lacy or Eastman, no standouts means no legacy.
Lmao, thats all you got? acutally he had the IBO, dont know if he's got rid of it. :lol1:
You still telling me Setanta Sports makes real money, 200k subscribers, paying £9.99, even if EVERY SINGLE SUBSCRIBER BOUGHT HIS FIGHTS, the money would still be shit.
:lol1:
erm okay so the ibo belt? i'm pretty sure that's what will really get the fans excited? you most likely assumed hopkins had a better belt because obviously you nkow fuck all about him.
no i didn;t say sentanta makes real money. i said 4 million dollars. from 200k people.
i said that 50k seats make mroe money than 200k ppv. which you didnt think so.
yes i agree hopkins is a big name. joe is obviously a bigger name than in previous years if hopkins wanted to call him out now. i mean hopkins could fight a winky again or call out someone who isn't remotely famous at all in joe and generate no ppv's at all...
nah hopkins is smart and realises joe must be someone big now that he wants to call him out after the winky fight.
so are you wrong about 50k seats is less than 200k ppv in your estimation? YES.

Hopkins may need Calzaghe to sell a good PPV but Hopkins does not need Joe to cement his legacy, he's already done that as a hall of famer. Joe on the other hand......
Well, I don't think Joe needs Bernard to cement his legacy. Beating Bernard would certainly help, but Joe doesn't have to have Hopkins on his resume to do it. Undefeated champ for 10+ years speaks for itself.
No, because you again you dont take in to consideration
HBO money,
Casino Money which accounts for Millions
But lets put it this way one more time.
If Joe calzaghe is such a draw, why do HBO make him free to air, when he could be selling all these PPV's and making money?
so are you wrong about 50k seats is less than 200k ppv in your estimation? YES.

DO YOU EVEN KNOW BERNARD HOPKINS IS? HE DOESNT HAVE A BELT FFS.
Lmao, thats all you got? acutally he had the IBO, dont know if he's got rid of it. :lol1:

:lol1:
Only in your own mind idiot, i mean, even now, your still trying to pretend Calzaghe is a bigger draw then Hopkins, which is fucking rediculous, when b hop is the bigger name, has made more money.
You must know something HBO dont, cos if calzaghe was a bigger draw than Hopkins, why the fuck would they make him free to air every single time, when he could be selling all these PPV'S
Are you saying HBO are deliberatley losing money?
Idiot.
:lol1:
Fine. You think Hopkins is a PPV superstar. He used be a pretty good draw, but he's not anymore. It's as simple as that. I disagree with you that he is a bigger draw than Calzaghe. Not after Kessler he isn't. Calzaghe's stock is on the rise. Hopkins' is not. Sorry.
Well, it's not a matter of being a Calzaghe "fan". It's a matter of getting to see a fight that probably won't be made now because Hopkins overplayed his damn hand. Calzaghe is the draw here, not Hopkins (not anymore at least). Hopkins has had PPV stinkers for the last 5 years or so. He's at the end of his career. He can't pull his weight without a quality opponent to pull the numbers. He needs Calzaghe more than Calzaghe needs him, IMO. That's the issue.
Hopkins may need Calzaghe to sell a good PPV but Hopkins does not need Joe to cement his legacy, he's already done that as a hall of famer. Joe on the other hand......
