Miguel Cotto has god awful defense and he likes to block punches with his face. We all know Cotto has a big heart, but he is very chinny. Miguel Cotto is like a reincarnation of Jake LaMotta with an average chin and that's not a good thing. Malignaggi(a lesser opponent than Mosley) was able to land pillow punch combinations at will and he even staggered Cotto. Can you imagine what's going to happen when a hard puncher like Mosley lands combinations at will on Cotto. I like Cotto, but with his Jake LaMotta type style and terrible defense he is gonna get exposed badly and Shane Mosley is the guy to expose him. The Puerto Rican fans at MSG are gonna be in for a big surprise, but I really won't be surprised at all.

Good call.
LOL, before every fight, before every step up in class, people question Cotto's defense.
"He got rocked by Corley, how is he gonna handle Zab Judah?!?!". He not only handled him, he clobbered him and made him basically beg for mercy. Cotto is no Mayweather, so yes he gets hit, but you guys act like he's Gatti out there, trading punch for punch.
The closer we get to fight night, the more I'm leaning towards Cotto winning a close decision, maybe split, in a tough battle.
When he beats Mosley, what will the Cotto naysayers say then? Mosley was old, Cotto's defense is still shaky, and if he steps up in class again he'll get schooled?
Only step up in class left is Mayweather, and I'm not ready to pick that fight until after the Mosley fight, though if money's on the line, I'd bet on Mayweather, but the Cotto haters need to stop pretending he's been fighting journeymen all this time.
I said 11th round TKO but that's going out on a limb, and I don't expect an actual stoppage. I just think it's possible that Mosley's dad throws in the towel late because I cant fathom Mosley being stopped.
Most likely it to be a close UD for Cotto. Somewhere in the 8-4, 7-5 range. I expect Cotto to figure Mosley out in around the fourth round, and start landing the jab a lot. I don't expect him to be overly aggressive until around the 8th when Mosley tires down a little.
He will probably be staggered a couple of times. I'm pretty much expecting it to be on a right hook when he comes in. Mosley will double, triple up on the jab, while Cotto covers up. He will try to throw combinations from the outside and move before Cotto can get off, so Cotto will have to resort to that jab, which imo will surprise the hell out of everybody.
Good break down there bud, Ive been telling any1 who will listen that Cotto's highly under rated Jab will be a factor in this fight too!
Cotto dont hav a bad D at all, peeps act like he eats up every punch u throw at him! He duz get hit but this is boxing - FIGHTERS GET HIT! ESPECIALLY when u attack as much as Cotto! Even Floyd gets tagged more when he goes on the offence like against Corley for example.
His chin aint bad either, ive watched him take sum flush bombs by punchers and be fine, and he's as tough as they come with mad heart - His problem is he gets STUNNED by fast punches he duznt see coming, A HUGE Problem for him against someone as fast and powerfull as a Shane Mosley! Im still backing him tho! :boxing:
Anybody want to make a wee bet?
Addison quote:

This is extremely enlightening statement. If you're right, then you may be right about the outcome of the fight...ie...Mosely win. I just cannot envision Cotto consistently backing off from a confrontation with Mosely. However, I may be underrating Mosely's power. Nevertheless, it's my understanding that Mosely has the reach advantage here and that's important, even if Mosely ends up the one that backs out. This is a hard fight to call. I'm still going with Cotto on young legs and determination. But, I wouldn't bet money on it.
It won't take massive amounts of power for Mosley to do his business.
An even older slower Mosley can win this fight.
This ain't hard to call for me.
I would love to see how shane deals with the pressure cotto will place on him. Shane has never seen pressured like he will get from cotto, also has shane ever been hit as hard as cotto will hit him. Cotto will bring an attck like never seen before I promise you regardless if he loses or wins he will give you 100%..
If shane fights like hes been fighting the last 3 fights all I have to say is good night.. Shane I dar you to stand in front of cotto like you did with vargas
I'd recommend the two excellent Mosley interviews here on Boxingscene.
Shane addresses these questions..
Basically, Shane Mosley LOVES to trade. It will be the opposite of everything you've ever seen Cotto in the ring with. Mosley will go down throwing haymakers. He's focusing on power for this one.
This is more simple than some people make it.
Right now, I have no pick on this fight. I was leaning towards Mosley, but I've been thinking about how good Mosley really is. I think he might be a tad overrated on this board. When was the last time he beat a truly elite fighter? Oscar over 5 years ago? Cotto is definitely his toughest opponent since Oscar, in my opinion. I question what a 36 year old Shane Mosley can do that Cotto can't overcome. Zab Judah hurt Cotto, and Cotto responded by fighting even better. It's like the more hurt he gets, the more focused he becomes, unlike Zab who unravels under the same circumstance. Is Mosley really a harder puncher than Zab? It's hard to say that he is. Cotto does sacrifice some defense for offense, but the Judah fight showed me that he is versatile. His toughness is never called into question, obviously, but I think Cotto is more versatile than many give him credit for.
I'm saving final judgement until I see the 24/7 show after Cal/Kess this Saturday.

I'm cool with that, I am betting 200 bucks on Mosley though with my Puerto Rican buddy from work who is a huge fan of Cotto. He actually thinks that Cotto will KO Mosley in 6 rounds no problem, I think that's fuckin crazy talk. What do you think the actual outcome will be ?

Some of you guys seem to be forgetting that Cotto is actually allowed to hit back, its not all about defense.
Any of the wobbly moments in his career were at 140lbs where he was clearly struggling to make the weight.
Mosely has not fought at this level for years and he will realise how old he is come fightnight.
Nah, I don't bet on any of my favorite teams, fighters, etc. That's rule number one in betting. I realize it's just points, just saying...
You may say I'm just not confident. I'm not overly confident (it is a pick em fight to me), but it is the truth, I've never bet on any of his fights.
I think he actually dropped N'Dou for the first time in his career. So I mean, it's possible. I seriously doubt he will get another real knockout though, unless it's from an overall beating.

Paulie Malinaggi can't stagger ANYBODY. Period. Dude has like 5 knockouts, probably against idiotic bums who he was fighting to get his name up there.

Yeah, but Forrest is the only guy who has ever seriously hurt Mosley. Forrest was a 6 foot tall Welterweight with huge reach, Cotto is a 5,7 Welterweight with short arms.
well i think de la hoya did land some good body shots that bothered him, but didn't hurt him seriously. vargas did good body work on mosley in the first fight, but mosley was still going strong in the latter rounds.
mosley is not vulernable to the body, per se, but a guy with a vicious body attack like cotto can hurt or wear down almost anyone to the body.
usually a good way to discourage an opponent from doing good body work is to counter to the head well, but cotto seems disciplined and keeps doing what he does.
a plus for mosley is that the punches he seems most vulernable to are the straight right hand and the jab. cotto has a nice jab, but his speciality is the left hook to the body, which mosley usually defends way better than the straight right to the head.
forrest hurt mosley BAD to the body in their first fight. round 10 with a left hook.
He did that's true. But that shot landed on a BRAND NEW surgery scar on Shane's waistline.. I'm pretty sure it was appendix. Shane has clarified that recently, but didn't seem at all interested in taking away from Forrest's accomplishment. The video is here at Boxingscene I'm pretty sure..
And again.. That was Vernon Forrest on the greatest night of his life. The shots he was throwing were some of the most vicious ever anywhere.

Cotto's chin is "squishy" not glass. Never been knocked out. How do you guys rate Mosely's chin?
Molsey's chin is great. An extremely solid chin.
The only time he was ever seriously hurt was after he was dazed by a massive head butt and caught with a fully extended straight right hand that he most likely couldn't see very well. After that he was hit with an uppercut that appeared to make his brain momentarily seize up.. After which he got back into the fight and won rounds and was able to hurt his opponent.
Mosley isn't a defensive fighter though. Shane and Miguel are going to love fighting each other. Both want to slug - but Cotto will be the one who has to back off when they start landing.
Mosley's chin isn't iron, but it's pretty damn solid. It's Mosley's body durability that I am worried about, I can't really recall him being hurt to the body though.

Cotto isn't planning on boxing Mosley, he thinks he can come forward and steamroll Mosley. Cotto even said "nothing can stop me" like he is superman or something. Cotto is underestimating Mosley's power and he will leave his chin exposed when he comes forward and brawls with Mosley. Oh well, Cotto's below average defense is gonna help make me a lot of money on November 10.:)
