ionno, kind of feels like its in a small slump right now. everyone i knew that was riding the MMA wave havent really been too enthusiastic lately. i could only get about 3 of my friends to watch UFC 77 with me when a couple of months ago, we had a BBQ with over 15 people. anyone else feelin this too?
MMA will never have HISTORY like boxing's
That remains to be seen. It's only been in the US about 24 years. It has a rich history in Brazil, over 50 years. Basketball was invented 1891, and took off professionally in the 1920s, the NBA was founded in 1946. Time will tell.
I think it is starting to fade a bit.
And it will come back up when the cards get better. It's the natural cycle. Boxing is the same way. Boxing went from the P4P king of Roy Jones JR to Floyd 'The Track Star' Mayweather and a loaded HW division with guys like Tyson, Bowe, a prime Holyfield, and Lewis to unknown Russians, a shot Holyfield, and guys like Shannon Briggs holding a World Championship belt.
Boxing will come back strong again, as will UFC.
The last UFC was a weak card going into it, except for the Silva/Franklin fight. And it had Tim 'The Sedative' Sylvia on the card. Even I did not watch it. UFC will have strong cards and weak cards, just like boxing. The last boxing PPV did not exactly set records, it had a pretty unknown Russian fighting a 44 year old shot Holyfield. And who was on that undercard?
I think it is starting to fade a bit. It is always going to be there, but I saw UFC 77, I was not impressed at all. The main event was entertaining while it lasted (for six minutes or so), but it was not worth sitting through the other 2 hours or so.
Couture retired, and this is a big blow. If Brock Lesnar becomes a top fighter, then they will have a replacement star, but I'm not sure if that is going to happen.
The next UFC card has Bisping versus Evans, which is the weakest main event in a very long time. I won't be watching it.

I was telling my wife that last night as I was watching WEC re-runs... The problem with MMA is there are two many ways to lose or win however you want to see it...and tapouts and stoppages aren't as artistic as a boxing knockout... Also the UFC seems too much like the WWE meaning... If it's not a UFC fight most MMA fans aren't really into it unlike boxing matches where it doesn't matter if they are fighting for the WBO belt or the IBF belt boxing fans are into it... Most hardcore MMA fans are really UFC or Pride fans not MMA fans... I consider myself a fight fan, meaning I watch boxing, kickboxing, IFL, Bodog fights, WEC and any other kind of fighting while UFC fans talk real bad about the IFL and the other smaller venues... Also there isn't a Pleathera of talent like in boxing..it seems as if all the OG MMA fighters are starting to get old, while the newer fighters aren't as dominant as the Ken Shamrocks, Royce Gracies, Bas Ruttens were... Fight fans will say they like to see good fights, but what they really want to see, is there favorite fighter whoop everyone he faces...That just doesn't happen in MMA... crocop was supposed to be the sh*t then he got his head kicked off... Liddel was the sh*t then rampage busted that ass again... Rich franklin was starting to be marketed as the sh*t then he got his nose pushed into the back of his head... Everyone in the MMA has lossed or will have losses in teh near future and although a loss or two doesn't mean anything.. It means a lot in terms fo marketing... I could go on and on but I am starting to lose my train of thought...I'm still messed up from clicking on the cupchicks thread...but I said all this to say unless MMA changes there format to one that is a lot more similiar to boxing MMA will be relegated back to the back burner in 2 yrs or less...
The popularity hasnt changed. The media is just not sure whether to cover it or not. It looks like ESPN is slowly introducing it. I think Lidell losing really backfired on them because they were trying to hype him up as the star. Now he's lost twice, and the other star they've tried to hype has retired again (Couture).
most sports journalists are sensationalists.boxing has it's best fighting the best now.it's evening out.a lot of people that watch the wwe watch mma,but they don't watch boxing.
anderson koing another UFC posterboy has brought me back into it.
yeah, anderson is my dude. i think the biggest surprise for me has been Mirko's horrible transition to UFC.
