Since I watched the fight live I'd had the opportunity to watch it two more times to get further impressions about what I witnessed.
First off I am deeply saddened that this will be remembered forever as Barrera's last fight. I'm also saddened that so many people have come out of the woodwork to take any opportunity they can to attempt to degrade Marco both personally and professionally.
I realize Barrera did not fight the fight any of us thought he was going to, it was neither a war nor a technical battle. But the majority of the critics are focusing solely on Barrera, and ignoring the fact that Pacquiao did not deliver the good either. Barrera was not the only fighter in that ring who failed to deliver any kind of excitement at all, Pacquiao also did.
So many of Pacquiao's supporters and members of his camp and the boxing press were banking on Pacquiao to knockout the legend Barrera early. He failed to do so in the same fashion that Marco failed to do anything he promised to do.
Coming into the fight Pacquiao fans were promised a brutal knockout for Manny, and Barrera fans were promised a stunning technical performance. Nobody got what they wanted in this fight.
Instead what we saw was Pacquiao's inability to catch Barrera with anything solid while chasing him around the ring all night, and Barrera's inability to let his hands go.
This fight was a bomb, pure and simple. The only positive thing to come out of it was that A.) I did not have to pay $50 to see it. and B.) I got to see one of my all time favorites in the ring one last time, even though it was about as entertaining as watching paint dry.
Criticism follows every fighter and there's certainly no shortage of critics on this message board. It's no secret I'm a Barrera fan and I was highly disappointed in Marco's behavior and fight plan on the night of the fight. Upon further reflection I do not feel disappointed anymore, but at peace with Barrera's legacy.
In this fight, both men won, and all of the fans lost. Manny Pacquiao won because he got another technical victory over a Mexican legend. Marco Antonio Barrera won because this fight was never about the technical victory for him, but rather the moral victory. "If I can just last 12 rounds, I will have proven all of the naysayers wrong." was his M.O. He even said it to Larry Merchant after the fight.
The fans lost because we didn't see anything, there was no fireworks, just one or two small sizzles as the curtain closed on another legendary boxing career.
I just wanted to point out that criticism goes both ways, and Pacquiao should be getting it as badly as Barrera is now. I wouldn't go as far as some on here, by calling a legend like Barrera a "pussy". Keep in mind that he still had the balls at age 33 with eroded reflexes and power and having had a brain operation, to get in the ring with a guy as fierce as Pacquiao and use his wits just to survive.
But what does it say of Pacquiao as well? For a guy as highly regarded as he is in this sport, to not be able to KO an aging fighter whom he detonated 4 years ago, let alone land anything solid or even hurt Barrera?
Disgraceful fight on both fighter's parts. It takes two to tango, that's all I'm saying.
if you'd rather him not risk his health to please you why refer to the fight as a "bomb" "no fireworks" or compare it to "watching paint dry". also why were you disappointed with his fight plan (running not risking his health) would you rather him traded with pac. if you were a true fan of barrera you would have been gratious for his last hoorah.
oh and as a fan of the pac man i didn't lose, i had my money on him
I bet real money on Pacquiao to win, and points on Barrera to win. So I won in terms of real cash. And I was disappointed with Marco's fight plan, because he could've done something to win while also not trading with Pac. He could've boxed more, he could've let his hands go when he was at an angle on Pacquiao and straffed him with a flurry or two.
There was a way Marco could've made the fight closer while still not risking his health, and that's what I was disappointed with. I'm not disappointed that he didn't war with Pac, I would've been very saddened if he had.

people overuse the word running so much its ridiculous. Barrera was using angles and focusing on defense, thats what you gotta do against a guy with Pacquiao, especially if youre a beat up veteran at the end of your career. I honestly thought this fight was pretty good. I imagined Marco fighting a Juarez II type fight, and it turned out there was some actually pretty decent exchanges. Pacquiao said that Barrera actually had him hurt in the 5th round.
When Pacquiao actually really pushed the pace, Barrera would start fighting in the pocket and counter, even though his corner hated him for it...must be instinct, haha
it certainly could have been better, but I enjoyed the fight nonetheless.
I hated Barrera's corner, I don't think his brother knows shit about boxing or how to win a fight. I'm not the outcome would've been different if Rudy Perez had been there, but it certainly would've changed the pace of the fight a bit.

this guy is a heartbroken mexiCant
if anyone is disgraceful it's marco with the hitting on the break to save his ass from a ko.
and even before the fight marco gave us a clue that he was going out cowardly
"I’ve given everything to this sport and I don’t want to get hurt at the end so I will try my best and if it doesn’t work out, I’ve had a great career."
you're fighting the pac man and you don't want to get hurt how you gonna do that? oh yeah by running. this fight was all about the payday marco knew he didn't have the will to win but he did have the WILL TO RUN. that's all for now
Anybody who knows me knows I'm as white as snow. So your argument there just fell on it's face before it even started. And if Marco gave us clues before the fight, then you should've expected all of that, no?

Yep, Guzman is a hype job. Of course, everybody wants a Katsidis-Pacquiao fight more than anything in the world.
Neither fighter would ever be the same if you ask me. It would be one of those fights that fight fans would talk about forever, and if Pacquiao won it it would definitely put him fast track to becoming a legend. Every legend needs that one classic battle which defines him, and I think Katsidis is that guy for Pac.
Did you just forget what you've just written in your original post?
"Instead what we saw was Pacquiao's inability to catch Barrera with anything solid while chasing him around the ring all night, and Barrera's inability to let his hands go."
As you stated, MAB was running away from Pac and his punches. Enough said.
Pacquiao was chasing Barrera in the early rounds, as the fight wore on the distance was closed by the 6th. Half of the fight Barrera opted to stay away, the other half he was in reach and Pacquiao douln't pull the trigger. Whether it was a matter of stamina or weight, I don't know but that's how I saw it.
Is it just me, or you have a short memory? I noticed that you seem to contradict yourself.
"Manny Pacquiao won because he got another technical victory over a Mexican legend."
I will make a good guess and I bet majority of the Filipinos were not disppointed in this fight. :D
You clearly misunderstood me there. By "technical victory" I don't mean Pacquiao displayed a technical craft and clearly outboxed Barrera. I mean he scored a technical victory simply by showing up, meaning anything he would've done would've still won him the fight because Barrera was not there to engage. I didn't mean technical as in it was a technical battle, simply relating to the fact that Pac qould've won anyway the fight went.
At least, we agree on this one.
The Guzman nutsucking around here is insane, what has the guy done anyway? Nobody can answer that, they just say he's so talented he'll outclass Pac and that's it. Guzman's hype job is equally as upsetting as Bautista's was. Pacquiao would probably shred him within 4 rounds.
Guzman is a hype job if I've ever seen one, the next Rey Bautista if you ask me. Meaning he'll get KTFO when he steps up his level of competition. Nothing Guzman has done warrants him a shot at Pacquiao in my eyes, Katsidis has earned it more.
At least, we agree on this one. :)
Barrera was not running all night, he was just fighting at angles. He was always on the right side of Pacquiao, Pacquiao didn't want to engage enough to score the KO. The same way Barrera didn't want to engage enough to give himself a chance to win.

I'm a true boxing fan and I'm happy Marco still has his health, I'm merely stating that everything this fight was billed as was not the case. It was neither a war nor a technical battle, and it disappointed almost everybody. As for Manny's boxing abilities, I'd hold off on that assumption until he rematches Marquez.

Oh he did. His handlers sure fukked up on that.
Aside from Marquez, I don't know of anybody else I want to see fight Pacquiao except maybe Michael Katsidis. I thought Marquez won the first fight, since Pac only took the first 3 rounds but those knockdowns put Juan down a lot, so I agreed with the draw.
Katsidis isn't the most technical fighter out there but he has the heart and firepower to match Pacquiao in what would be a war for the ages. Pacquiao probably will never fight him though because Katsidis is still rather unknown.

I agree though that the fight left much to be desired. Obviously MAB didnt want to fight. And Pac was tired at the latter rounds for some reason.
I believe the rumors that he's having problems with his weight. He came in almost at the Welterweight limit.
It's either that or his late night hobbies are making it difficult to diet properly.
Don't underestimate Pac's accomplishments. He definitely has a good chance of matching if not surpassing Barrera's legacy.
Maybe in terms of great Filippino fighters, but overall I don't think he can beat Barrera's legacy. His trilogy with Morales was past Morales' prime, and I can't see any prime fighter out there today who Manny could have a great trilogy with. But I do think he may be able to tie Barrera's legacy, a rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez would help him get there.
No, and he probably wont have the legacy Barrera has overall, either.

did u guys see what mr bastos has posted? is that allowed?
I don't believe it's allowed, but a lot of members here post porn pics in different threads and never get punished for it. Can't say I'm complaining, it wouldn't be very straight of me to complain that someone posted a picture of a hot chick getting fucked by a machine while enjoying some titty suction in my thread.
OK, for you to say that the rematch was boring you absolutely have to say that Floyd-Baldo fight was the stinker of the decade, simply because the rematch was a MILLION TIMES BETTER than Floyd-Baldo.
So is Floyd-Baldo the most abominable fight in history? If you say no, dont frigging complain about the rematch. You cant have it both ways, otherwise your credibility goes down the drain.
I would certainly nominate Mayweather/Baldomir for the most boring fight in recent memory, no doubt about it. I'm sure I could find an old fight that rivaled in in terms of overall disappointment, but we're talking recent memory here. I'd also nominate all of John Ruiz's fights for that award as well.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall saying the rematch was boring, simply uneventful and disappointing.
Yet you will say that Floyd-Baldomir was beautiful. Stop the hating man.
FYI, Pac didnt promise a KO. And he DID hurt Barrera, that's why MAB hit him on the break, to destroy the momentum.
Where the hell did that come from, and why do you think I'm a Mayweather nuthugger? Obviously you've never read any of my posts on here and are making some sort of broad generalization, don't.
i bet u that when pac decides to call it a career HE WILL NOT go out like mab......
No, and he probably wont have the legacy Barrera has overall, either.
Great post but I disagree with some of what you had to say.
It takes to to tango but if the partner is not willing to dance, there can never be a tango. In the same token, if a runner runs faster than you do, you won't ever catch him while he's running away from you.
I'd say not all fans lost like you said or wanted others to believe. In fact the true boxing fans were happy that Marco came out of the fight with his health intact. He seemed to be happy with the outcome and his fans should be happy for him. As for Manny, most of his true fans were satisfied that he has evolved as to be a more and mature fighter and proved he's got the ability to box whenever he needs to to win a fight.
