Have always heard he hated and barely ran. Avoided it almost as much as Liston did.. Had he been more into running how much better could he have been?
I think running translates into great champion as much as anything. Benn is the key example here.
It's like taking advantage of the rules. Boxing is not and was never supposed to be that.
Every fight doesn't have to be stand and trade but there's a line where dancing around the ring avoiding engagement is in excess.
runners guys who do it too much are a discredit to the sport of boxing and can never be 'great' champions. I dont care how many belts or promoters, media's, sanctioning organzations champion them.
I can't put anyone in the 1990's in ATG status.. :nonono: Aside from Roy. Possibly Sweat Pea.
You're crazy,he's fought all sorts of ppl at heavyweight, even with a big weight difference.A beast at Cruiserweight and he's still fighting at like 43 and WINNING!!

chavez was more 80s but did some good work in the 90s. he's an atg.
whitaker is one too.
Running isn't the key to success. You can get great stamina from things other than running. I think the lapses he went through in his heavyweight fights where he would have no energy is from his steroid use.
where did you hear this? I have always heard Holyfeild was the hardest training fighter since Rocky Marciano...
He trains hard, he just don't be running.
Bruno trained harder than hercules, but he didn't spend enough time in the ring and it showed.
Leon Spinks barely trained outside of the ring and it didn't really show until later in his career.
I think he would've won Bowe I, probably knocked out Foreman (which would've been a pretty impressive feat), not lost ALL (keyword all) of those bouts prior to Tyson.
I think it mattered more earlier in his career when he was lighter, ala early-mid 90's. I think he might've pulled out that first fight with Lewis, too, had he had more endurance.
Probably what keeps him from being an ATG. At the same time, it might be what has extended his career, as the wear & tear on legs from running at 230 lbs. is probably pretty intense. Just look at football players, they usually burn out at 30-ish.
:lol1: Holyfield IS an all-time great.

Hmmm,he wouldnt have to depend on his heart and will to get passed those rounds when tired. That I know. I think he would have done alot more knowing he doesnt have to depend on heart and determination to win while exhausted.
