Now I'm not saying he is not a great fighter. He is but people are so pumping him up now that he is retired and most of them only saw Youtube highlights of him and parrot what other people are saying about him. I just had to say this after I read the "who is better, floyd or pernell" thread. Pernell is being so pumped up high it kind of reminds me of the The Mike Tyson hype train that when at his best.......he was unbeatable. Anyway this isn't about Tyson it's about Pernell and being compared to Floyd mayweather.
Floyd is obviously better. Yes I said obviously and let me explain. Floyd's defense is better for longevity. Pernell's defense was great too but it was totally different and it worked based on pure reflexes and athleticism. Once he got older his defense wasn't as effective anymore . Smoking Crack didn't help either. Floyd's defense would work even when he is past his prime just like Hopkins's and Winky's defense.........It's more based on fundementals then natural ability.
Offense......again floyd is a lil better overall. More punching power then pernell even as he keept moving up in weight. Pernell was always on a Pauli Malinaggi, Cory spinks level of punching power.
And let's not forget the overall phisique....Floyd is 5'8 with 72" reach and Pernell is only 5'6 with a 27" reach. A great big boxer always beats a great little boxer. Pernell with his reach and height would have to have a totally different style to bother floyd.
pernell couldnt jab on floyd floyd would jab pernell to death...whitaker reach is .... like 2 3 inches less then judahs
do you have their reaches? Im interested what they are.
and either way it doesnt matter. Pernell could land the jab consistantly against a 5'11 De La Hoya, Mayweather is only 5'8 and 2 inches isnt even much, not enough a difference to make a jab ineffective.
and Mayweather has a good jab but its not amazing and he doesnt use extremely often, if there was a punch that would be effective in this matchup it would be Floyd's lead right hand.
pernell couldnt jab on floyd floyd would jab pernell to death...whitaker reach is .... like 2 3 inches less then judahs
Really? You honestly believe Floyd would jab Pernell to death? Bitch.
Anyway, the title of this thread is "Pernell Whitaker is overrated on these forums"....
He's a genuine legend. He's definitely NOT overrated
that doesnt really make sense. the first four rounds before Mayweather adjusted were pretty even, and some would say Judah won them, altho personally I thought the rounds were split between them. and Judah primarily used his left hand to be effective. Pernell would be stuffing that very effective jab along with that left hand, and would be able to slip punches much better than Judah as well.
the reach difference between Judah and Whitaker is very little Im sure, I doubt it would make much of a difference.
I'm not saying it would be a easy fight. But I say floyd would beat him by split decision. It would be a close technical fight. Pernell would do some of the stuff you said and floyd would do some of the stuff I said. Floyd has a good defense both covering up and slipping punches. He has good footwork and will use if if needed. He can cover up like Winky Wright and just go forward and apply pressure if he feels like it's working for him. I say at the end of the day, floyd would win by a close decision but a convincing decision
Blackirish, he wouldn't have to adjust and pressure pernell the way he did judah. He has a way bigger reach then pernell. All he has to do is throw more jabs like he did vs delahoya and the fight is over.

You speak as if you know what you are talking about and then make a comment like this. There is NO point in arguing with you when concerning Pernell because you have NO idea.
I do know. Some people got their mind set that Pernell would beat floyd and I got my mind set that he wouldn't. Plain and simple
I explained myself at the creation of this thread. I stated all of floyd's advandages.
Defense- floyd,
offense-floyd (more power)
overall stamina-floyd
Height/reach- floyd
Speed- ? you tell me

he started falling apart when Mayweather changed up his strategy, and after that he started getting tagged and lost focus. Its not like he gassed, Zab doesnt gas in the first 4 rounds...but he does tend to lose concentration easily.
If Floyd tried to fight Whitaker like he did Zab, he would beaten. That hands up stalking isnt gonna work against Pernell. All due to respect to Floyd, but JCC and Nelson were far better fighters in that style of fighting. and Whitaker didnt have a ton of problems figuring them out and outpointing them. And if the fight stayed like the first 3 rounds of the Zab fight before Mayweather adjusted, he would also get beaten.
In other words, that adjustment Floyd made to counter Judahs speed and southpaw stance would absolutely not work on Pernell.
If you really believe all of Whitaker's defense came from head movement, I dont really know what to say...Ive seen a lot of his fights, and I thought he used a little bit of everything-movement around the ring, rolling and blocking with the shoulders, blocking with the hands, angles, head movement...

Blackirish
How do you think Zab started falling apart? Did he fall apart against Cory Spinks when he knocked him out in the 11th? No, floyd made him fall apart by changing his game plan from boxing from the outside to putting the pressure on him as Roger Mayweather instructed him to do. And it worked

now people are on his nuts talking about he unbeatable when he was at his best.
Maybe its because at his best he fought some great great fighters and didnt lose. He was robbed against Chavez and Jose Luis Ramirez, whilst Floyd although undefeated, hasnt fought the same quality opposition and many believe he lost to Castillo.
Every fighter is beatable, but Whitaker probably didnt receive the acclaim he deserved at the time.
Floyd does not pull back and even if he does he covers up unlike pernell. The guy's defense came purely from moving his head. He never covered up with his gloves. Take a look at this:
Floyd can and did all of this vs a bunch of fighters, the differece is he doesn't do it the entire fight waisting energy moving his head like this. Floyd's defense comes from covering up (shoulder roll and defensive shell a ala winky wright) and moving his head where pernell only moves and slips punches.
Im sorry, but u criticize people for getting their boxing 'knowledge' from youtube highlights, then use a youtube highlight video to prove a point!
Whitaker used his gloves to catch his opponents punches in many of the fights i have of his. Whitaker was much more aggressive than Floyd, and used his defensive skills whilst exchanging with opponents. Floyd stays at range and uses his hand speed as his main defense most of the time.
I believe it takes more skill to stay closer to ur opponent and not get hit, as Whitaker displayed.
He also fought a very close fight with a prime De La Hoya when Whitaker was past his prime. Compare that to Floyd.....winning boring UD against an older slower out of retirement Oscar.
As for him being overrated...he is by some, like many great fighters are. But i personally think its great that he is gaining the recognition he deserves. Its not hype like Tyson. Whitaker actually fought and beat some great fighters.
Why compare their heights?? They have both fought and beat opponents much taller than themselves.
This thread turning into a flame war lol jus reading the first page haha and floyd overrated pernall had better boxing ability.
Thank you for you expert oppinion sterling
If anything Pernell is underrated. He was a remarkable boxer, a genuine all-time-great and a fighter who ducked no-one. I mean, he didn't lose a fight until he was over the hill (the Ramirez decision was absolutely appawling) and he fought everyone.
Trust me, he is not underrated. In the last few years, the Pernell Whitaker cult has been growing. Mostly people who watch highlights. Some do know what they're talking about but they still pump him up too high as if he was unbeatable. Way too much hype
As I said, his style wasn't mean to last for a long time and smoking crack didn't help him either. He wasn't disciplined and it cost him in the late stretch and now people are on his nuts talking about he unbeatable when he was at his best.
He is no where near overrated. Honestly I feel he is finally getting some of the much earned and deserved credit for how great he was.
Come on now people give credit where credit is due PBF made a adjustment in the Judah fight which Judah could not do and that led to PBF beating the shit out him for 9 rounds because Judah only rounds 1,2,and 4.

well i'm no youtube watcher, i lived threw that era and watched a lot of his fights, pernell was a great fighter, the simple fact that floyd is suppose to be this great fighter right now is the reason everyone is putting down all the greats. like with all great fighters as time goes by people start forgetting their accomplishments. especially when new fight fans come along and just watch shit on youtube, a round here, and a round there, they decide oh this guy ain't so great, and that's the case here. just cause some people watch some fights don't make them an expert. i see floyd being remembered as a pre madonna, a fighter with the best defence, and the biggest shit talker that never delivered a great performance cause he was cursed with a glass jaw family. but i do say floyd has the best defence there ever will be in boxing.
Pernell's defense was not based on pure athletic ability. The fact that he could slip every punch in a flurry was, but his defensive skills are technically perfect, and he NEVER pulls strait back from punches, unlike one Floyd Mayweather.
Pernell's defensive was amazing up until the end of his career. He probably could have fought on longer, but he couldn't stay at those lower weights, and he was too small to be effective in his older age at the higher weights.

Maybe there are a few on here who base their judgements from you tube highlights, but from a personal standpoint I watched him from the olympics onwards and beleive he's the best boxer P4P of the last 20 years.
Floyd is probably slightly better than Whitaker, as far as overall skills. I would say that Whitaker was more entertaining. His defense was disrespectful..LOL
Entertaining my ass. I remember back then how people were talking how borring he was. I disagree because I'm a fan of pure boxing skills. I can always appriciate a blood and guts fight but that's not why I am a boxing fan.
Anyway your oppinion probably comes from watching mixed youtube highlights or The contender editing out all the borring stuff and making it look like a Rocky movie.
