In 96? I know he wasnt at his best, but he was still pretty good. At least I thought he was.
Oh yea, Im not saying he was shot, not yet.
but I thought hed seen better days. he never really went on to get any big wins after that fight, and didnt look amazing leading up to that fight either. He was in a lot of exchanges through his career, a lot of those type of fighters look 'old' before their 30th birthday.
It was still an outstanding win for De La Hoya though. that was such a terrible cut that opened up. I cant remember, but I think I heard that he got it a while before in training. I might be getting mixed up though, so correct me if needed
________
Spec E30
Chavez was kind of past his prime at that point. He didnt have an easy career, he always went right at people.
In 96? I know he wasnt at his best, but he was still pretty good. At least I thought he was.
You fucking said that if you fought the best fighters, then you must have been "damn good". I disputed that and gave you examples to support my assertion. My point remains that merely FIGHTING the best doesn't validate your greatness. BEATING the best does that. You were wrong; now get over it.
Oscar Delahoya has been competitive in - but lost - all of his top fights. Oscar's BEST win was Ike Quartey. Oscar's record in big fights against his toughest comp is poor. He has five losses, and has failed to dominate an elite opponent. He has lost to MW's (hop & sturm) and he has lost to LW's (shane & pbf).
Quartey - good win...some dispute it.
Pernell - disputed win
Shane 1 - clear loss
Shane 2 - disputed/close loss
Hopkins - knocked out
Trinidad - disputed/close loss
Mayweather - clear loss
Sturm - disputed win
Note: I only put in Sturm b/c that was his middleweight debut.
Further, here are guys who WOULD beat Oscar: Winky Wright, Vernon Forrest, Kassim Ouma. And Cory Spinks would have a very good chance.
He beat JCC when he was 96-1. At the time I would have considered JCC an elite fighter. I know because I was going for JCC because I didnt like DLH back then.
I know you're hating on DLH but he is not overrated no matter how many arguments you try to make. By the same logic Shane, Tito and Pernell are also overrated and they haven't even fought the level of opposition that DLH has fought. You are wrong I am right!
lol @ dios not putting Mayweather vs Dlh as a close loss.
Here's who Jesse james Leija fought:
Azumah Nelson (multiple times) , Oscar Delahoya, Shane Mosley, Juan Lazcano, Kostya Tszyu, Micky Ward, Panchito Bojado, Machito Camacho, Arturo Gatti, Ivan Robinson and Gabe Ruelas.
Howz that competition?
But JJ was just a journeyman...never a contender.
If you are desperately clutching to that flawed position, then you are not knowledgeable about the sport.
Better fighter: Leija or Hatton?
The practice of matchmaking is to "test" your fighter against certain guys as they come up. Bruce Trampler would use the same guys over and over. So that gatekeeper would end up with a bunch of terrific names on his resume - even though he lost to all of them. For example, Cosme Rivera is one of those guys. You are wrong because MOST gatekeepers are solid-to-good, but not great.
DeMarcus Corley is a longtime gatekeeper for the 140 division. He fought Judah, Cotto, Witter and Mayweather. That is better competition than Ricky Hatton has. Is Corley better than Ricky?
Carlos Maussa fought
What the fuck are you on about, dude?
Pretty much most of what you just wrote doesn't make sense even in German.
I get your point about Corley, but let's talk realistically. Initial argument was DLH was overrated, that's basically just a whole load of horseshit, and anyone who knows anything about boxing will say the same.
There is a popular misconception. Soem less-than-knowledgeable fans bestow "greatness" upon somebody just because they fought alot of guys. Fighting guys doesn't make you great. BEATING guys makes you great.
Jesse James Leija has fought top competition. Is he great?
That's just shit.
If you fight the best fighters (Gatti did, as did Mayweather, Ward, Castillo, Corrales, Chavez, Ali, Foreman, Leonard, Hearns, Hagler, Duran, Barrera, Morales, Pacman, and the rest) it probably means you were damn good.
If you fought shitty old washed up fighters in toilets in Doncaster then chances are you ain't that good.
As for the less-than-knowledgeable bit. That I ain't.
Ian,
I did not say that. You need to read the context. I was responding to a post.
Have you been to college?
Three times.
I have a BA an MA and a teaching certificate.
Why.
Have you just logged on to disagree with everybody or something? Try saying something positive or constrctive instead of just saying things that will potentially cause an argument.
I don't post to simply disagree with folk. I want good discussion. I don't want to argue, just discuss. If you want me to post something positive, let's talk about Joe Calzaghe or Ivan Calderon or Daniel Ponce De Leon, or Ricardo Mayorga...you'll get something positive then...
That doesn't mean shit. He can still be overrated. which he is. He is amazing but he's not as good as most people make him out to be.
Okay
Oscar had JJ Molina, JJ Lieja, Genaro Hanendez, JCC twice, Miguel Angel Conzalez, Pernell Whitaker, Hector Camacho, Ike Q, Sugar, Gatti, Vargas, Trinidad, Felic Sturm, and Floyd fucking Mayweather...how can you call him overrated? He scrapped the lot...
That makes no sense.

He's not criticizing those fighters, he's highlighting some of PBF's best wins as someone called him (Floyd) the most overrated fighter in history.
That makes no sense.
Another stupid post. World champion boxer who has boxed everyone put in front of him. He fought everyone credible at his weight, and then fought Mayweather despite being old and past it. That hardly smells of overrated...

De La Hoya's overrated. He's lost nearly every big fight he's been in.

What the fuck are you talking about? Diego Corrales overrated? Check your head .

Jesus Chavez, Diego Corrales, Zab Judah, etc are all shitty opponents. Yeah . OK. Learn the sport.
And if Mayweather beats Hatton, then the thread answer is RICHARD HATTON.
Nobody has fought more shitty opponents than Rickety Hatton.
