Actually you dont even have to win to get a title shot...Manfredo, Forbes just like a title shot against Oscar, Gomez. The Contender is great for boxing believe or not. The show bring in non boxing fans and excitedment to the boxing world.
Lol 2 months after the fact...
Why would you retire after all the exposure you would get, these contender guys are getting TITLE SHOTS, winning the contender puts you right back into title contention.

so far i think the only ones who will be contenders are gomez and mora....ishe smith's got his head fucked, he couldve been one, but i dont think we'll see much from him....
My problem with this season is that 2 of the favorites(bika-soliman) are already contenders, but when they stepped up to the highest level, they lost(i think soliman was robbed in the first mundine fight though), and i dont expect much more from them, so i hope one of the young untested guys beats one of these guys very decisevely, because that really would put him in the level of a top contender, in terms of record in the level of green, bute and lacy...
It's like watching a college basketball tournament of teams that didn't make the NCAA tournament, or any postseason at all. And now people want to bitch because someone who made the NIT is wrecking the parade...
Or doing a reality baseball show of guys who have already been sent down to the minors for an extended amount of time - but then having them all compete for a chance to get back on a major league team...
It's all garbage to me. It just makes boxing look even more side-show. I know it comes down to money for most of these guys, but I'd rather my comeback not include cameras in my face during anything other than an actual professional match.
As a matter of fact Jeff Lacy was going to be on this very show, but his shoulder injury prevented that from happening. So was Curtis Stevens but Jaidon was already there and they did not want to eventually fight one another.
They went through this last season when Steve Forbes was on the show and people were complaining that a former world champion was on the roster. For a few episodes they actually changed that part in the opening credits where Leonards is talking and added a part that said it was for fighters looking for a chance to shine and fighters looking for one last chance at glory" IMO a contender is a guy trying to make his way up not a guy on the way down
You're right about Ishe. Was thinking he lost to Bailey... Checked it and it was the other way around.
I don't remember who I had winning Ishe vs. Sechew, although I view myself as the loser for having sat through it...
I don't fault the fighters for going on the show, but the producers for calling these guys "Contenders"
I mean, was Manfredo Jr. really a contender? or did he luck out and get on a game show?

Ishe Smith was Undefeated, his first loss was against Sergio Mora....and some people believe he beat Powell....(including Lederman...)

LaFarrell Bunting lost on Shobox too. So did Henry Buchanan.
And there's Michael Stewart got blown out by Sharmba Mitchell on a Ricky Hatton undercard, Ebo Elder lost to Lavka Sim on Friday Night Fights, Donny McCrary who's only notable for KDing Allan Green before being KO'd on FNF, I've seen Roshii Wells KO'd live way down on the Brewster-Golota undercard, Rubin Williams getting destroyed by Jeff Lacy...
That's just some of the names I'm recognizing browsing...
If these folks were really "contenders", they'd have promoters getting them big fights - but everytime these guys get close, they lose on national TV - same as Bika & Soliman...
Not one fighter in particular
Cornelius Bundrage? Jaidon Codrington? Ishe Smith? Grady Brewer? All Shobox losers before becoming "contenders" Those are the first ones that come to mind...

It sounds like your referring to one fighter in particular. In his 10th professional fight. Who was fighting for the first time on national tv and outside of New York in some one else's home town. And who was i believe 21 yrs old. exposed?
i think that may be a bit pre-mature.

I thought this show was for unknowns and amateurs coming up. Someone correct me.
Pretty much, from what I can tell, the prerequisite to get on "The Contender" is that you're not one.
It's a silly game show that I'm surprised is given any credibility by real boxing fans... Many of the names I've seen attached to that show are fighters who were exposed on Shobox
Well, Steve Forbes was a former titlist. Just because we know who Bika is doesn't mean everyone else does, I mean the show is called "The Contender".. I doubt we'll be seeing Floyd Mayweather or Jermain Taylor on there anytime soon..
They don't really get the most talented of fighters do they. I guess the demand to level up a bit helped change season 3, even though some of the talent could have been a bit better, there is some stiff competition in this particular tournament.
I was at one of my boxers fights back a few years ago (I was training guys but still attempting to be active as a fighter myself at the time) and I asked SRL about the upcoming "Contender" show that everyone was talking about (Season 1 hadnt started yet) and he told me as a former world title challenger I was too experienced, etc.
I am not sure why they changed the criteria only three seasons in but I will tell you this much... one thing you do not see is seriously gifted or tall or freakishly athletic guys etc on the show....It's like when Chad Dawson tried out for season 1 and didn't make it. With his height and boxing ability it was easy to see that he wouldn't have been good forthe drama of the show because he could have slicked his way to 4 very boring but easy wins in a row and won the million bucks. 5 round fights would have been a nightmare to fight him or anybody like him (or Andre Dirrel, etc) in.
Jesse Brinkley i think
yea it was brinkley, and then brinkley complained like a little bitch that reid didnt fight the way that brinkley wanted him too. what a disgrace... he gets beat and has the balls to say reid should have fought differently so brinkley could of fought better. what a douchbag...
