Anyone you can think of? I know they are retired for a reason but hey, there are some weak champions out there and maybe a retired fighter can have a style to put it all together.

This thread turned from return of greats to one of the saddest stories in boxing history...oddly enough I was just watching legendary nights.
Bowe-Holyfield, right? I tivo'd that.

Change to title of your thread to "Meldrick Taylor 101" lol. Seriously though, let's get this fucker back on track.
I think Lennox Lewis could make a decent comeback and probably win a title from one of the lesser champs.
It is popularly believed that Meldrick Taylor was never the same physically or professionally after the bout. Dr. Flip Homansky, who examined Taylor following the fight and immediately sent him to the hospital, summarized his injuries by saying "Meldrick suffered a facial fracture, he was urinating pure blood, his face was grotesquely swollen... this was a kid who was truly beaten up to the face, the body, and the brain".
Don't you agree he was knocked out though? He couldn't answer the count, he was in la la land and Steele asked him not once but twice. It's like saying if a basketball player hits a last second shot we shouldn't count it 'cause his team had been losing. If you let the fight go off you steal a legit KO from Chavez
He nodded his head, and then went to look at Lou Duva acting like an idiot on the canvas.
He was very awake.

Meldrick answered Steele by nodding his head. The entire reason why he didn't answer Steele verbally was because he was looking at his corner, because Lou Duva's dumbass jumped up on the apron and started having a fit. That distracted Taylor just long enough to look away while Richard Steele was asking him an essential question.
Half of the blame lies with Steele and the other half lies with Duva IMO.
That's the exact part where I kinda got choked up- I'll admit. I saw the tears in Meldricks eyes and just thought about how HE must feel, if I felt like shit from just WATCHING the fight.

Lmao at the Tyson remark. Who the fuck need to beat him before everyone agrees? Same with Holyfield really.
Realistically:
Lennox could beat a minor beltholder (Sultan but NOT Chagaev) if he were in shape
Tszyu could beat some of the guys if he could make 140
No way Trinidad beats a Taylor or Pavlik
But why do we want to see any of this?
No doubt. The damage was already done to Taylor and nothing could reverse that but damn. At least let him go out on top, like a man, the way he deserved. At least then he could have his pride still intact.
Did you see in that episode where Meldrick was laying on the couch, in some ragged apartment somewhere, in clothes that looked like rags watching his fight against Chavez on tape? That's the very definition of heartbreaking to me.

The worst part is that in Legendary Nights, he says in the interview that he told Meldrick to box! And then they show footage from the fight... yeah fucking right, Lou.
And you're exactly right about Steele. The fight would have ended as soon as Meldrick took two steps.
It's bad enough that he's in the state he's in today- but to not even let him get his last "Able-bodied" win is just cruel.

Actually, Taylor's last fight was in 2002... I couldn't imagine him fighting now
I knew he retired in '02 supposedly for good, but then rumors began to fly around '05 on the internet that he was fighting again. I didn't know if he was or not, so thanks for clearing that up and I certainly hope he's not.
I've hated Lou Duva's guts ever since that fight. Prior to that I respected the man. Taylor had bagged every round up until the 12th, had Taylor just given Chavez the 12th the score still would've been 119-109 for Taylor.
And Richard Steele is a damn scumbag as well. His excuse was that Taylor went down as if he had "no life left" but he got right back up. And Chavez was all the way across the ring, with 2 seconds remaining...it's not like Chavez was going to make it back over to Taylor before the bell, let alone punish him.

I experience a weird mix of emotions. And yes, I've been teary-eyed from that episode.
Anger at Lou Duva for telling Meldrick he had to fight the 12th round out. Confusion by the absolute heartless way in which Steele stopped the fight. And yes- it was heartless.
And of course, just plain sadness when I see Meldrick's before and after. I still feel like I'm seeing it for the first time when he goes down. When Jim Lampley is like "Unbelievable!".

I believe he's smarter after those losses though, I believe that over the years tyson has been getting smarter not dumber. And he'll always have a punchers chance to win any fight.
Not really. It was evident in the McBride fight. McBride being a guy who got blitzed against Mike Mollo in one or two rounds.
Tyson is a guy who generated power with technique and speed. He wasn't a heavy handed guy, he was just very explosive. Explosive power only stays with you for so long. Guys who have heavy hands like Foreman for example keep that power forever. Also Mike's style of offense is extremely hard to keep up. I wouldn't be surprised if his back is shot. All that bobbing and weaving takes its toll on your body.
That Legendary Nights Episode was so well done. I get choked up nearly every time I see it. When they show Taylor at the end slurring his words, you just wish you can go back in time and tell him to run.
