Micky Ward lost that fight to him in my opinion, but it was very close.
I watched Mayweather-Burton... and I was not impressed. Mayweather decided to leave the defense at home... but if he says it, I guess that's his call.
You're almost right about Mayweather leaving his defence at home. But Mayweather knew that Emmanuel couldn't hurt him. I HAVE the fight and have watched it several times, and it seems to me that Augustus altho believed that mayweather couldn't hurt him either. And this was actually the case until near the very end, I believe in the 9th or 10th round. They really both put on a very spirited show, with each taking over in turn and showing blinding spped and accuracy. Mayweather was probably hit more in that fight than in any 3-4 fights together. That's probably what he means by saying that Emmanuel Augustus was his toughest fight. I've heard him say this at least 4-5 times. He always gives him his full name, and shows respect.

I thought Augustus beat Ward clearly but closely.
And that Mayweather fight was a war and Mayweather was callin it his toughest fight for a while. i doubt he'd still say that though.
But that was his most non-stop action fight, next to mabe Chavez. It was a grueling fight and Mayweather got nailed with some very good left hooks that bloodied his nose
DWiens 421. The accepted P4P top guy Mayweather had ALWAYS said that his toughest fight was against Emmanuel Augustus. And if you saw the fight you'd agree. He had a terrific fight against Micky ward too, when Ward was at his best, and, in my opinion won that fight although in Ward's home town, they gave it to him. Augustus, in MY opinion anyway, had all the makings of a genuine P4P top guy. He was hopelessly handled, didn't train properly, would go in against a cageful of tigers, and did a lot of fooling around, AND used to pride himself in taking fights at a couple of days notice, in the other guys home town. So where did all THAT get him?? Nowhere !!

What did he bring to the table that could have beaten Mayweather or Corrales on his best night, because those were the two P4P fighters in his weightclass back near the turn of the century, I haven't really looked at his career since.
I really don't think that he had enough talent to beat anyone really good, so I doubt he could have ever eclipsed the list.

no p4p fighter...but ABSOLUTELY he could have been a titleholder. He had beaten title challengers like Burton, Oliveria, Toledo, and Mike Griffith, had a very close fight with title challenger and tough guy Micky Ward, and had a very close fight that could have gone either way against Leavander Johnson, who did end up winning a title.
but ifs and buts mean very little in the end.

The main factor in most of his losses has been lack of activity during rounds, and incredibly bad decisions.
He didn't have good enough boxing skills to pile up rounds, he didn't have one punch knockout power... he wasn't accurate enough to land a bunch of punches to wear his opponent down (at least against good fighters).
How was this guy going to be elite again?
Incredible defensive skills and a HUGE heart.
Not to mention his incredibly unorthodox style.
I have only seen him fight Mayweather... I certainly hope his defensive skills were saved for another night, because I saw none in that fight.
He's a tough motherfucker, but I don't think he had enough boxing skills to be a P4P fighter. He also didn't have enough power to compensate for that, so I doubt it.
yea i agree with this.
I think he could have been a top 10 fighter in his division at certain points, but he followed all of his big wins, or even his best losses, with consecutive losses to nobodies.
I think he would have been a p4p level fighter if he was managed correctly and really focused for his fights.
