I have been racking my brain for a month or so now to figure out if a fight such as this would even be competitive. Say a super slick boxer with great foot and hand speed were put in against a fringe heavyweight (26-10 record or something like that). Say the heavyweight doesn't have great boxing skills, strictly a banger who hits pretty hard, but isn't very fast. Could someone like Spinks or Mayweather be able to jab and move for 12 rounds without being caught? Obviously their punches wouldn't do shit to the heavyweight, so they would constantly be having to (literally) run to get out of there, but if they were able to slip punches every so often, they could score with body shots.
I'm sure quite a few people are going to call me fucking retarded for even asking a question such as this, but it's been on my mind. Does anyone agree that it is possible, or am I kidding myself?
Not a stupid question at all, bro. I call it "Fantasy Boxing" and I make matchups like this in my head all the time!
Come on, now, seriously.
How many of us can't say that they wouldn't LOVE to watch that little ball of fire Jorge Arce try to take down fat ass Riddick Bowe? It'd be great!
Haha, yeah, fantasy matchups are great, I just thought I would get called dumb because I really have been struggling to figure out how scenario like this would play out.
Thanks for the input everyone!

Floyd Mayweather and Cory Spinks no. There the weight difference would be too much, because they could be easily knocked off balance by the bigger guy. When you are off balance, the defence and slick boxing goes away. A really good light heavyweight or maybe even someone who is a supermiddleweight could do it. Also, you say heavyweight. How big a heavyweight? Are we talking a 250 lber, or a 205 lber?
I'm a heavyweight and I've sparred with lighter fighters and some of them have given me some trouble, so it is possible. When your talking Spinks or Mayweather the size difference is too big. Spinks is a natural 147 lber and Mayweather is probably naturally about 140.
Roy Jones was not that much smaller then Ruiz and his punch was hard enough to make Ruiz cautious.
We are talking about the guy who is likely to weight something like 70 pounds less (taking into accaunt that average HW is 220+ 6.2) and 6 inches shorter.
And the guy who lost his punch something like 2 division before.
He still did what Mayweather and who every small would do.He rarely got hit by Ruiz.Im sure Mayweather could be in the same boat.Of course 50lbs heavier.
Only if said slick boxer is fighting John the quiet man Ruiz. Anyone can beat him. seriously
seriously!! i cant believe this guy was an actual champ. i despise ruiz as a fighter!
its not impossible at all. that kind of **** aint gonna work against high level boxers, hell no, but I dont see it at all impossible for a much lighter guy to handle a big guy.

My only comment is that you're going to have to try *MUCH* harder to come up with the dumbest topic on this site... this isn't even close and much more competitive offerings are being posted constantly
you aint lying there.

yer i rekon a person lik spinks or mayweather could beat em, if they trained ultra hard to gain more muscle to get a bit bigger. eg: mayb mayweather at 160pounds, but an efficient mayweather at 160pounds. n the heavy weight must b an average heavy weight.
i think against the proper heavyweight, yeah a slick boxer would survive but i dont know if he would risk punching at all, it would look like a classic spinks fight....

Good question, and the answer is yes, the super slick boxer can win for sure, using 12 rounds of footwork, espcially a guy like spinks, who 'runs' like the wind.
there defense wont stand against HW punch because even if they block the punch they would be moved back or even knowdown.
that is why if anybody from lowerweightclass goes to middleweighclass get high reconigtion as well as people from middleweight going HW too.
another aspect that you didnt mention is the conditioning and speed issue which play a major factor just look at Vargas and James Toney at 200 pound
