Showtime has a potential Gem on their hands this weekend, september 1st, on Showbox.
Victor Oganov is a massive puncher, stopping all 26 of his opponents. But his competition has been week. Zuniga is a considerable step up in competition for Victor, and it took the huge Kelly Pavlik 9 rounds to stop him. Pavlik remains the only man to stop Zuniga. Oganov is also a pressure fighter that loves to have his man fighting off the ropes. In fact, BOTH guys like to come forward which makes this fight so interesting.
Zuniga has been in with sluggers before, winning a controversial decision and drawing with Jose Luis Zertuche (another Pavlik victim), and getting outboxed by Daniel Santos, and dominating a faded Atwun Echols in his most recent bout. Zuniga can punch, and he has a tendancy to completely neglect defense when he's on the offensive. And much like his fellow Columbian Edison Miranda, Zuniga tends to throw low blows and hit on the clinch.
This a classic matchup between the volume punching of Zuniga, versus the Power shots of Oganov.
Its a close fight IMO, im picking Zuniga. BUT, Zuniga has a history of fading badly in some of his fights, and its cost him close decisions. He faded badly agaisnt Echols, and Echols took most of the last 4 rounds of the fight, landing scorching blows that would have dropped a lesser fighter. Luckily for Zuniga it was a 10 rounder, cause he would have certainly been stopped had the fight been 12 rounds. If Oganov punches as hard as they say he does, maybe he comes on strong in the waning rounds of the bout and stops Zuniga. But its yet to be seen if he can even hit harder the Antwun Echols.
BOTH guys have very fan friendly styles and its my belief that when they meets its gonna be a fantastic fight. A memorable fight even. The winner goes on to bigger and better things.
I cant find any footage of ZUNIGA for you guys, you'll have to take my word that he's entertaining. But heres some footage of VICTOR OGANOV. This first round is a Round of the Year Contender. Amazing stuff.
The fight was good but because the two guys competing weren't world-class, I'd still put it behind the two Marquez-Vazquez fights and even behind Miranda-Pavlik.
Well thats Zuniga. Zuniga punches really hard as well. Oganov seems to have a remarkable chin though, and if it can drag him into the late rounds he can probably stop Zuniga
Exactly what I thought would happen. Oganov must work on his defense, and big props to Zuniga
zuniga cuts up almost every fight, the clubbing shots of organov will bust him up almost surely
o yea i agree. He definetly cuts up. But hes got heart like i siad and he'll pull through it. It happens to him all the time, he knows how to deal with it.
oganov is a -240 favorite for those of you saying zuniga should be 3-1 fave
my money is on oganov, he only fought weak comp cause some kind of medical issue limited where he could fight. he has a good amateur pedigree and world class sparring
still u watch him fight and u wonder if Zuniga will beat him. I think he definetly will.
When Oganov is under attack he goes into a shell and he has such stubby arms that if you can keep him at a distance and keep yourself off the ropes you can easily win.
Zuniga has longish arms, a high activity rate, and a BIG punch.
This is gonna be a competitive fight, and i think it could come down to who has the better chin and who gives first. Zuniga has heart, so WHEN he gets in trouble, cause he will, he'll last it and then come back strong. he's done it often in the past

What is it on hbo? If it's on showtime, I hope sopcast will show it live. Because sopcast is annoying and shows fights like 15-20 minutes off which pisses me off when I know I'm not watching a boxing fight live.
its showtime and i know what u mean.
Zuniga only had stamina issues because Pavlik was landing bombs. If Pavlik wasn't landing bombs Zuniga would have amazing stamina. Same goes with this fight, if Zuniga allows Oganov who I consider a shitty boxer but very powerful
no Zuniga has had issues his entire career. Especially against Antwun Echols where he DOMINATED the first 8 rounds and then was EXHAUSTED for the final 2 rounds, and was really getting battered around the ring and smashed with BLISTERING shots that would have knocked out many other lesser fighters. Had the fight been a 12 rounder i can assure you somebody would have stopped that fight.
And Ive read some articles on him, and they all say the same thing. like clockwork Zuniga hits a wall at around round 8, and degenerates quickly after that.
The reason i think he loses his stamina in many fights, is cause he doesnt pace himself. He throws SOO many punches a round and they are all bombs.
I've always liked big o, seen him fight a few times here in Australia, he does have a tendencie to get hit, but i have never seen him hurt and i have never heard a punch land so hard in all my life. When i saw him live it just sounded nasty. Im still not 100% sold either because of his sometimes roboticness and the way he gets tagged. but hell i like watching him fight and i hope he wins this one.
I downloaded that video awhile back and have to say bs on that. Kelly Pavlik was close to a ko in that fight before the fight was stopped. The fight was only close in the beginning, near the end Zuniga looked alot like Miranda and was taking unnecessary punishment. In the later rounds Pavlik had the rounds easily. That is the most ridiculous statement to say Zuniga was robbed. Though I believe Zuniga will beat Oganov because Oganov's been fighting paper-weight boxers. Victor Oganov should be listed as the underdog for this fight.
i agree with that bold statement, and the whole post. id even go as far as to put him at 2-1 underdog, and put zuniga as high as 2 or even 3-1 on.
Its Zunigas fight to lose IMO. If he has those same stamina issues as in the past, he gonna get knocked out late cause Victor CAN punch.
I seen the fight, amazing, the harsh thing was it was two up and coming prospects, one of them might not be the same with the amount of punches they landed,i didnt think Jiminez was gna get KO'd,i picked him to win
we've been begging for those types of matchups for years and they are coming together regularly how which is great news.
Bad news is we are starting to take them for granted, like we did this one, and if the media a fans continue to do it maybe things will go back to the way they were :(
Yo Kball, did you saw the fight of Roman "Rocky" Martinez vs. Daniel "Azuquita" Jimenez on the Calderon-Cazarez undercard? That shit was also FOTY material...

I don't know about Oganov, I am not sold on him yet. In this fight, he was hit with so many flush punches, that if Grant had a little more power, I am sure he would hurt Oganov and the outcome could have been different. Oganov reminds me of young Jirov a little, the same relentless style and poor defense. Better opposition will show what he's worth.

Damn Kelly Pavlik, Zuniga was Robbed!
I heard Zuniga had faded miserably and was on his way to a pounding if the fight hadnt been stopped because of the cut.
Ive read 2 stories, one said it was a very close fight, and the other said Zuiniga won many of the early rounds and had a points lead. Both stories said Pavlik could very well have been on his way to a stoppage win, as Zuniga had been fading rapidly.
Seems to me Zuniga has some awful stamina issues and its hampering what could be a very interesting career.

not yet but im trying to download it.
This fight, Oganov-Zuniga, could be just as good as a few of the other FOTY contenders this year, like Pavlik-Miranda, Cotto-Judah, Amonsot-Katsidis, Marquez-Vazquez, and Diaz-Freitas.
I mean, for me, this is a can't miss fight. Should be a real barn burner and will undoubtedly entertain.
Normally I would think Oganov would be to small cause he is only 5-9 for a supermiddlweight, but Zuniga is barely an inch taller
