Yes is winning, 21 to 15. If not going back to 15th round fights, Welter had an awesome suggestion in making a 13th round. Making a draw nearly impossible unless in a scenario of both fighters being knocked down, or points being taken away from both fighters.
I dont know that since going to 12 rounds serious injuries in the ring have declined at all. And like I've said many times no matter how many rounds bouts are people are going to get injured in boxing. People get serious injuries in boxing just sparring the gym somtimes wearing headgear and everything. Some are just pre-disposed and/or hit the wrong way.
For the most elite fighters. Yes, definitely. Promoters like having as many of their fighters as possible in notoriety, they dont want just one guy that everybody follows, as least some promoters. probably one of the reasons they have it 12 rounds now.
Some fights need the few extra rounds to determine the clear winner, for example Williams vs. Margarito, Mayorga vs. Spinks . Juarez vs. Barrera etc... One thing ive always thought about was, why are there an even number of rounds? there should at least be a odd number of rounds.
No... but I do miss the days were they fought to the death.
yeah man, in those days the "winner" got payed more, didn't matter who was more popular. The one who showed more guts and heart and was still standing....that was the "CHAMPION".
I wish we had 15 Rounds in the HW and Cruiser divisions. It would up KO endings by 10-25% and really remove the clutter that surrounds that division. At least I think it would.
I think the risk of boxing related injuries would certainly increase a tad, but the injuries themselves would remain the same. Naturally going 3 extra rounds would play some part as far as risk goes, but ultimately I barely see the extra 3 leading to many, if any extra ring related deaths.
If Hopkins/Taylor would've had 3 extra rounds, Jermain would be back in Arkansas picking mud off his boots somewhere. And DiBella would be out of the business for good, which needs to happen fast. I think as far as bad promoters go he almost rivals Don King.
so true! dont know if it would affect Duhhhbella tho
I miss 15 rounders.
It'd be nice if the athletic commissions decided to allow just one of the sanctioning bodies to go back to holding 15 round championship fights.
That belt would eventually become THE BELT to hold and we could do away with this 4-belts per weight division bullshit.
no imagen thne heaveyweights in a 15 rounf fight now, you would be bored out of you head. its bad enought a 12 round fight between them
Yeah but for razor close fights like Hopkins/Taylor, Taylor/Wright, Marquez/Pacquiao, etc... 3 rounds could've crowned a decisive victor.
Disagree.
I think that Cory/Oscar/etc train as hard as they can. Their personal stamina and capacities are 10 rounds.
Perhaps. The problem wth that ptheory is that.. If they know that they have 15 rounds to go, wouldn't they fight like it? They'd have a slower first 7 or 8 rounds.. and then tire around the 11th or 12th.. I knwo I'd prepare for that, if I knew I had that problem. And I'd assume every fighter knows if they have a stamina problem.
I do, thinking about fights like Hopkins vs. Taylor I and having those 3 extra rounds... What a difference it would have made!
The way Alexis Arguello cemented his reputation in those rounds..
Fraziers left hook in the 15th..
I think they should have it on the table. Somewhere.
There are still ring deaths and lasting injuries with what we've got..
Possibly fewer of course..
But as a sport I think Boxing would be itself more at 15.

Would ODLH be an elite fighter if we still had fifteen rounders? Or Cory Spinks? Hell - Jermain Taylor?
Where the hell did this come from? I asked a simple question about 15 rounders and you bring 3 different fighters into question about whether they'd be elite in 15 round fights or not? I'm asking from the standpoint that it would seperate the chumps from the champs, and that the extra 3 rounds would've overturned some shitty close or bullshit decisions.
I know that most of the new kids here probably don't even know they existed...But do you miss the old days of 15 round fights?

Yup, and if it wasn't for Oscars stemina, Tito would have been owned. There would be no debate.

You were right, most have never even seen a 15 round fight.
The "Death comes after 12 rounds" is total bullshit. Changing fights to 12 hasn't stopped boxers from being killed. Being scheduled for 15 and
actually going 15 doesn't always happen, as with 12 rounds. But it sure
did weed out the chumps from the true champions.
15 rounds wouldn't make a difference. Fighters would prepare for a longer fight, and the ones who sneak away with the wins would just do what they do, but stretch it out for another three rounds. You get winded more, true. But.. sometimes, the winded guy still wins, sometimes he doesn't. It's really just about the fighters.
Another angle that is interesting yet funny. I don't think I could've stomached 3 more round of Hopkins/Wright. Still, I think it would help ven out a lot of shitty decisions.
but thats just it. if there were 3 more rounds I really didnt see Wright lasting. Look at Leonard Herns that fight would have been completely changed if it were 12. Id like to see it come back personally. You would see a lot less so called "champions" and the ones that would establish themselves would be the real deal.
