this was my first ever fight i saw in 1995. nigel benn was a great british boxer and mg had a lot of hype when he came to the uk. unfortunately he had brain damage after the fight, but this was a proper war. btw benn had a broken jaw in the early stages too which i didnt know about until after. what heart!
tell me the last time you seen a fighter like McClean who comes in the fight to fight the best anywhere anytime. After that Tszyu fough in britian but any other fight it hard to remeber there was been fighter like those two
Ricky hatton goes to America to fight
one of the best fights i have ever seen, total war, sad fact , McClelland told the media that benn would get seriously hurt, and that he would damage Benn like his American pit bulls do to each other, fuckin chump, Benn battered him now thats Irony. Roy Jones shit him self and ducked Benn after that, BENN true English warrior destroyed Doug DeWitt, and Iran Barkley and big mouth McClelland, felt sorry for the way he was treated by Don (Wan) King, and the way McClelland's sister bad mouthed Benn for not giving them money fuckin scum, nobody likes to see fighters hurt this way I was a great fan of Paul Ingle who suffered brain damage and of Michael Watson one of the most under rated fighters of his era, but to try and guilt trip money out of someone is shocking
This is such a terrible thing. I think the fight would have ended in the first round if the ref wasn't such an imbecile. He kept separating the two when it was obvious Benn was in danger, after rising from the 1st round knockdown, McClellan ran back over for the finishing blows, and he was stopped by the ref more than one time, that gave Benn time to recover. As the commentator said, Benn took two shots while he was on his way down, that he had no defense against, that almost put him out, a few more punches before he had time to recover would have sealed the deal.
Benn would have lost in the 1st. Gman had him done with but the referee saved Benn's ass like how many times? He gave him so many opportunities to recover it was pathetic.
This is my favourite fight. I like to watch the fight at least once a week - sometimes I watch it a couple of times a day.
I think the ref did give Benn a couple more seconds than he should have but it was obviously the correct thing to do. Well done ref.
I can also remember the British commentators shouting "He's quit, he's quit" when McLellan went down on one knee blinking furiously. Although I thought that was a bit harsh after what happened to the G Man, but I suppose it's technically correct. He did quit.
I find it hard to have any sympathy for McLellan either. He was a very nasty piece of work and I think this may have been the lord dishing out a helping of Karma. Anyway, what is done is done.
Well done Nigel Benn

Like yourself if you think that ref wasn't a jackass!!!
He was rubbish. But Benn earned the win by getting back up and getting himself back into the fight. There was no saying that Gerald was going to finish him off if the ref didnt keep giving him the extra 2 seconds or so. The ref was more inept and unorthodox than he was a cheater.
What's ashame is that your downplaying the role the ref played in the first rd. Just listen to the announcers yelling what the hell is the ref doing. If the ref didn't keep G-man from attacking right away I have serious doubts Benn would of made it out the rd.
All im saying is, the ref holding McClellan back for 2 seconds shouldnt overshadow Benns display. McClellan still had time to finish Benn off in the first but his attacks throughout the fight were poor. His punching power could have KO'd Benn at any second, yet he failed to put his shots together.
There arent too many fighters who could have taken such a beating and come back so strong in the following round.

Those commentators were shamefully biased.
Thats what I've always thought....
Anyway, it was a magnificent fight. Shame about how McClellan ended up but that's life. It's a hard sport.
Yes. Under certain guidelines set out by the WBC, a fighter has up to 20 seconds to climb back into the ring and be ready to continue. When Rahman was knocked out of the ring in his first fight with Maskaev, the ref counted to 20, of course Hasim was still on the floor at ring side, but he was given the 20 count. Having said that, I'm not too sure when this ruling came in.
You have to be knocked completely out of the ring to get the 20 count Benn was still on the apron so it didn't count.
you could be right that benn may not have got up for the count if the ref let him take mroe of a beating, but benn has a nice weaving defence and has a lot fo heart. sometimes there are worse decisions than that. the ref was french and i dunno if thats how they ref in france.
Benn wasnt that hurt. He took some massive punches, but was still able to climb back into the ring and stand up before the count of 7.
Its a shame that so many people exaggerate the refs role in the fight, and not give Benn more credit for overcoming such a devastating puncher in McClellan. After all, thats what boxing is all about; having the will and determination to get back up and fight back.

no...its 20 seconds if your knocked out of the ring..however Benn was still on the apron thats why he didnt get the 20 seconds...just thought id clear that up
ref should be in jail for that shit.. he was protecting benn in the first blocking mcclellan from getting to him cuz he was so hurt..

shouldn't he of got 20 secs tho for falling out of the ring?

Not sure what the French Referee was doing in that fight but I don't think he 'saved' Benn I just think that he had a very poor style of refereeing.
Correctamundo.
