Through 38 fights:
Mayweather:
2 gift decisions
2 tough fights
De La Hoya:
2 robbery losses
6-7 tough fights
If Mayweather fights the caliber of opponents Oscar fought for his last 5, what results will we see?(he's taking a step in the right direction now)
The way I see it, Mayweather should not be fighting to become an all time great, he should be fighting first to earn his way out of oscar's shadow...then we can start talking. As of now, he hasnt proven anything when we have a warrior like Oscar standing right there.
It is true that he doesn't have to get himself out of Oscar's shadow... but unfortunately, it also does take something away from his win over Oscar. If Oscar never wins his big fights, how great is he really? By not having to get out of Oscar's shadow, it takes away from Floyd's legacy.
you have a point
Hey, you should watch it... I love Mayorga, but it was still fun watching De La Hoya crush him.
I've only seen the fight once and that was live, so I should revisit it.
so in reality floyd doesnt have to fight to earn his way outta oscar's shadow floyd is known for winning his big fights while unfortunately oscar has lost most of his big fights

sounds like a hater
ok so what were the gift decisions??
floyd vs castillo 1 and floyd vs oscar?
sorry floyd beat both of them
the castillo fight was close
but the oscar fight wasnt floyd won 8 rounds to 4
u act like floyd fights bums
the guys he ends up fighting are good fighters at the time and a majority of people pick the other guy to beat floyd
but floyd wins regardless of the circumstances
i like oscar and he was robbed in the mosley fight and in the trinidad fight but he's been given gift decisions too
his fight against sturm and his fight against whitaker
so in reality floyd doesnt have to fight to earn his way outta oscar's shadow
floyd is known for winning his big fights while unfortunately oscar has lost most of his big fights
That was actually what Mayorga said... so, I doubt it. They mentioned it when they are fighting... they gave the triangle, and said, "Ricardo Mayorga is finding out it doesn't quite work that way tonight."
Sorry I missed that one.
Exactly. Wonder if that person put Money on Mayorga against DLH?

Triangle theories are STUPID.
The one that made me laugh the most:
Ricardo Mayorga beat Vernon Forrest (twice).
Vernon Forrest beat Shane Mosley (twice).
Shane Mosley beat Oscar De La Hoya (twice).
Doesn't that mean Ricardo Mayorga should destroy Oscar De La Hoya (especially because each fighter beat the next twice)?
Better still what's their Triangle Theory for Vargas vs. Mayorga?LOL.
How'd that theory hold up when it was tested?

This isn't entirely true. It's like saying Barrera couldn't beat Morales because Barrera lost twice to Junior Jones and Morales beat Junior Jones. All fights have their own set of circumstances.

Well you said Oscar always lost to better fighters. You said that Floyd in p4p the best and Floyd Beat Oscar. That means Floyd can beat anyone Oscar beat.
So case closed!

Vargas - AFTER FIGHTING TITO - was never the same.
After Tito, and the beating he took in that fight (especially round 12) Vargas was basically done. Nando came back and had no chin. He was knocked down by a busta in his next fight, and he started suffering back problems.
Round 12 here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=JiiQY10cqqI
You can't just go to boxrec and quote stats, man. You have to look at a guy's career and see what happened and how.
"no one is shot that early"? Guys get shot when they do. Tito shot David Reid even earlier than THAT.
Regardless, your picking at 1 fight, get rid of it and Oscar is still 6-2 over mayweather in tough fights taken. At least youre consistent and dont claim judah as a tough fight for mayweather, which is the same as what youre claiming here. I personally think Vargas was sharp enough looking in that fight that he wasnt totally washed up (and proved it with 2 ko wins after the tito fight against solid guys),
What Oscar has that Floyd will never have, is that he's the Tiger Woods of boxing. He draws fans to boxing that wouldn't normally watch it. He draws the causual fan and that's something that Floyd will never do, and over his career he has fought the better competition. If you wanna say that Oscar fought past ther prime fighters. What about Floyd fighting an old way past his prime Gatti that Oscar destroyed years before, he fought Baldomirs old slow ass, and he's looking to fight 35 year old Mosley if he beats Cotto, which remains to be seen. Not knocking Shane but, he is nowhere close to what he used to be. Oscar foguth B-Hop at 40, but B-Hop is not the average old fighter. He is arguably one of the best middleweight champs ever, not to mention the undisputed light heavy weight champ. He fought Shane in his prime. A prime Shane is also better than anyone Floyd has ever fought, and a very good Quartey when he was one an undefeated welterweight champ. That alone is better than anyone Floyd has fought. What's Floyds best competition in the last 5 to 6 years, an overrated Judah that was coming off a loss to Baldomir, who had no business getting that fight, and a past 30 Oscar who wasn't nearly what he use to be. He's taking on hatton and that is fine, but I want to see if Cotto beats Mosley, will he fight Cotto? Will he fight paul Williams? Sounds to me like he's hoping Shane wins, so he doesn't have to deal with Cotto. You can argue my second point all you want, but my first point cannot not be argued. Oscar is what Floyd never will be because of the ability to draw the causual fan, and that is good for the sport of boxing. Even at this point in his career, he is able to still draw fans that wouldn't normally watch boxing . Thats is not arguable, love him or hate him. Also love him or hate him, you can't say that Oscar ever backed down from fighting anyone, and always fought the best competition there was.
well stated. Like it or hate it. Floyd is yet to go threw adversity....he could of by showed the world that he could ICE that M*F*. Any man so hard in words should back it up. I remember when ODH lost to Tito he wanted to dig a hole when his fans reponded the way he fought.
because in boxing, tall aint all....reach and speed are !!!
he doesnt want to rematch him because he doesnt want another embarrassing track performance for boxing. By the way, I think mayweather couldve probably TKO'ed OScar that fight he way he wore him down in the late rounds...the fact he never even tried to cement his win shows he deserved a loss.
I agree....Floyd fights to win by points not to KO anyone unless it is in the bag. That is why it's so hard to see him fight. But he is great in what he does.
Oscar had his chance to be great, but never seized it. He spent his time pondering in his biggest fights, the Mayweather fight was a great example. If Oscar had the same work ethic that Floyd had, this legacy may have been different.

your attempted spinjob turned into a pretty accurate description of reality and still proves that Oscar did more with his 38 fights than Floyd did.
Having said that, Floyd is the better fighter than Oscar and has more potential...but theres no need to rain praise on him as a tiop 3 ATG as he claims he is until he proves himself as one. I have shown that he has done worse than Oscar with his 38 fights and has no reason to claim such honors.
Well when oscar had 38 fights he had fought Hernandez, Chavez, Pernell, lost to Tito, fought Javier Castillejo who was 33 and oscar was 28 at the time, fighting for the first time at 154 "so that de la hoya could collect a title belt" and then went on to fight Vargas, so he has fought 2 older guys in Chavez and Pernell... beat up Castillejo and had a good fight with Vargas, floyd had 38 fights has moved up 5 weight classes and won the WBC title in all of them, always fought bigger guys and has fought good guys like Hernandez,Corrales,Castillo twice, took a "easy fight" with Victoriano Sosa and Phillip N'dou then fought Gatti then went on to fight Mitchell and Zab before fighting guys who outweighted him by about 10-15pounds in Baldo and Oscar
