it should of been a 60/40 split imo, Hopkins was coming up for Jones's titles and Jones had one the first fight. Hopkins wasnt a bigger name then Jones, granted he had just knocked out Trinidad but Jones was all over the highlight real at that time with the behind the back KO of Glen Kelly was known for beating Hopkins and was a 3 division champion
IMO a rematch would have been an interesting great fight, in which I would have picked Roy to win by UD.
Hopkins was responsible for the fight not taking place more than Jones was, because
1) Jones deserved more money for reasons already cited
2)Hopkins lost the first fight, and it would have been in HIS interest to even the score.
Hopkins had more professional fights that Roy when they fought.
He won clearly and convincingly.
He would have given Hopkins a rematch and the most money Hopkins would have ever made in his career but Hop declined.
Let's not push it in the other direction either, Roy had a stellar amateur career which means a lot too. It is true that Jones was close to his best (168 IMO) than Hopkins was.
Blaming everything on that is ridiculous, though.
Fighting an unexperienced Hopkins in 1993 and winning awkwardly gets you no stripes if you can't give him a rematch. Especially when he beat up two people (Johnson and Tarver) that beat you up..

Sometimes Hopkins is an asshole. Prices himself out of a fight for 1.7 million and instead gets 100k than he bets 50k he will knock the guy out and he loses so he has to give that money away also.
Bore-nard Dirtykins knew he was going to get his ass handed to him by the better man. Just like Roy said, he beat him once already with one hand and Hopkins was the one moving up to challenge him for his titles. Roy was #1 on the P4P lists at that exact moment in time and the much bigger draw. Bore-nard Dirtykins always took the path of least resistance by beating up on blown-up welterweights and staying at a weight he was too big for in order to help him dominate. Roy yo-yo'ed between weights all the way up to heavy and won belts in 4 weight classes.
Bore-nard always knew Roy had his number. But watch how he'll be eagerly waiting to challenge Roy after he beats Trinidad. Ol' snaggle-tooth will be licking his chops to try and beat an old Roy at a chance at "redemption" in his eyes for a loss in his prime. Bore-nard just needs to finally shut up and retire.
I agree...See what you typed says it all. But peps on Boxing scene won't take this into consideration for some stupid reason. Hopkins became a much better fighter later on and RJJ didn't want none! He much rather fight the bums he been fighting. Hopkins makes a good point in the video. He says wait you just said your bigger then me! This being true because RJJ fights at 170++ and even fought at heavyweight. That should have given him reason to take the fight. RJJ then started talking shit and not letting Hopkins finish what he said to say because he knew what he said was stupid.
Hopkins started his boxing career off at Light Heavweight 175lbs. Roy started his at Roy 154. Now who's the bigger man? Hopkins had to starve himself for years to make 160 when he should've been at 168 or 175 for a long time. If Hopkins wanted a rematch with Jones it would've already happened by now.

Unexperienced with 23 pro fights? at age 28?
Hopkins got better, but you are making it sound like Trinidad-Reid, Chavez-Taylor, Sanchez-Nelson which is clearly not the case.
Also, Jones was going in the fight with a bad right hand, which is just as relevant.
Especially when he beat up two people (Johnson and Tarver) that beat you up..
That's so stupid it begs for forgiveness from heaven.
1) Jones was 35 when he lost to Tarver & Johnson.
If you were had knowledge/logic in sufficient amounts, you would look at the performances of fighters with similar styles at that age. Pea, SRL, SRR... What do you see? that they were all past it by then.
And Don't start giving me stupid answers like Tarver, Hopkins, Johnson were all old. L at fighters with similar styles, based on reflexese and speed.
2) Jones and Hopkins didnt know that Tarver and Johnson would have fought Jones 3 years later, how were they supposed to consider it when negotiating for the fight?

If you're going to use this argument you could say the same for Jones. They had almost the same amount of fights (Hopkins had 1 more than Jones I believe). They were both the #1 & 2 contenders for that belt as well. They were both at the same level at the time of the fight.
Dude I got to LA and couldn't go.. I went to the beach a couple times but then other then that just stayed at my aunts doing shit... It was really fucking lame, I was supposed to stay longer and stay with my other aunt and cousin Wendy and they were gonna take me out but another friend of mine died and as soon as I heard the news I came back home.
Shit bro.....I'm really sorry about that.
I seriously doubt that Bernard Hopkins didn't think he couldn't take Roy. Hopkins has never been one to talk shit about a man he didn't know he couldn't beat. I think it was more to due with the fact that Hopkins was fresh off of dismantling the sports biggest star at the time in Tito, and thought that that warranted a 50/50 split. Hopkins was the biggest star in his division, and Roy was the biggest star in his. 50/50 probably seemed fair to Hopkins, but that's not the way this sport works.
I agree: it was out of pride, not of fear.
Still Roy being the 3 division champ with the better resume and just being the draw overall deserved more money.
See above, PM me and let me know how RATM was and how your "tour" turned out. I haven't been around to find out.

he still lost the first and did not deserve 50/50 at the time..
How are you gonna expect to get payed the same as someone who beat your ass the first time?

Hopkins couldnt touch Roy and he knew it.
Thats why he turned down the biggest payday of his career to NOT fight Roy.

I still believe Hopkins is as talented than Jones but never got the credit he deserved because of a combination of two different factors.
1.) His division wasn't ripe with talent at the time of his reign.
2.) He didn't move up and down the scales to capture every title he could.
Jones is a great fighter, and an all time great no doubt but Hopkins is also a great fighter and an all time great in his division. In a rematch now I think Hopkins would take Jones easily, back then? I'd say it would've been a coin toss. Because Hopkins had reached his peak at the time and Jones was already at his.

LOL
not the day they fought.
