OLEG MASKAEV READY TO BECOME A NIGERIAN'S NIGHTMARE
By G. Leon
GL: Can you give us some thoughts on your fight with Sam Peter finally getting done? "I'm the champion so sooner or later I had to fight someone and he's the top contender. I have to fight this guy and then I'll move on to bigger fights. This is my fight and I"m going to make sure I'll be ready for this figh. I'll be in good shape, I'll be ready to fight and ready to put on a good show."
GL: What does this fight mean to you?
Oleg Maskaev: "In boxing every fight is a big step and each victory is very important. This is the next fight of my career and I have to win. If I want to have better opportunies to fight again I have to win. If you lose that's it, you lose opportunies and the belt and then and it's a long routine and road to the same position where I am right now."
GL: Does it bother you that a lot of the experts and other heavyweights are favoring Peter in this fight?
OM: "People aren't looking at my history. Every fight of mine I was underdog so it doesn't scare me. It's always been like that.
GL: How do you feel about fighting at Madison Square Garden?
OM: "I fought there a couple of times at Madison Square Garden and I like it. As the champion this will be my first fight. A lot of Russians from Brooklyn and New York will come to see the fight and I will not disappoint them.
GL: Do you think this fight will go the distance?
OM: "No idea, I'm not an expert and I don't know what's going to happen. It can go the distance or it can be short and stopped in a couple of rounds. I'm going to tell you something, the heavyweight division today is very seldom that a couple of strong guys can stand there and fight for all twelve rounds."
GL: How do you like training in the Poconos?
OM: "It's beautiful here set up nice. The boxing gym, the room and the food are all close to each other. Not a lot of people no distractions, it's perfect for me.
GL: What will be the difference in this fight that leads to an Oleg Maskaev victory?
OM: "The difference will be because I come to all of my fights with a different plan. My trainer and I have already sat down and talked about it so we're going to have three plans for this fight and we're going to switch them any way we want to.
GL: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?
OM: "First of all, I am a Christian so I would like to say God bless everyone. I love everyone and I wish everyone the best. Come out to Madison Square Garden on October 6. Is going to be a great night of boxing."
Showtime Championship Boxing will televise Maskaev-Peter live from Madison Square Garden on October 6.
I'm flipflopping a bit on this fight - first impressions having watched a fair bit of both fighters is that Peter should have too much strength and power for Maskaev. he has got a weak chin, which isn't ideal against a guy that throws a lot of power shots.
However, Peter hasn't been as destructive as he could be, and if he isn't in good shape, I can see Maskaev getting a decision. What I would finally add is this; If Peter comes in with a game plan of pressuring Maskaev onto the ropes, bullying and fighting a bit dirty, then he really should win. I hope for his sake he doesn't try to box on the outside, because he's giving oleg a much better chance if he does that.
peter's been inactive for a while, he probably won't come in in shape, and peter's not a skill guy to begin with. he's not an accurate puncher, he just clubs u behind the head until he gets u down. maskaev is old but he has a real chance in this fight, rahman lives and dies by the right hand, and old oleg has his number, he could get by peter

Couple of corrections... Oliver McCall actually had the title after he ko'd Lennox Lewis and it actually took Tua 11 rounds to get to Oleg and Oleg was nearly pitching a shutout.
I got Maskaev by Late stoppage although he will probably win by decision.
jeez,,,,,,I didnt know I had to be that exact,,lol. ok it took tua 10.3 rounds to stop maskeav :puppy_dog
why wouldnt peter walk through him? Maskaev was knocked out by David Tua, kirk johnson, Lance Whitiker, and 2 other people who never had a title. Maskaev shouldnt even have the title. thats how weak the heavyweight division is today.
tua took 10 rounds to get to maskeav and those other string of knockout losses all happened in succession where he seemed to have lose his confidence. still,,,his chin is only average at best but peter still hasnt been able to knockout even average chinned opponents. even the semi durable guys like shufford, pudar and hawkins ( who was knocked out by maskeav) have taken peter the distance

honestly who is the worst WBC title holder in the history of boxing? I think it has to be Hasim and Oleg. And if you want to talk history well also Trevor Berbick and maybe Leon Spinks
how can you even put rahman with maskeav when maskeav knocked him out in 2 out of 2 meetings. the worst ever champs are rahman,,,briggs and bruce seldon hands down

I don't see why so many people think peter is going to walk through maskaev, the only fighter of any note that he has stopped is jeremy williams.

I am not impressed with peter either but, you have to respect his punching power if maskaev drops his guard for second or tries to brawl with peter it will be a early night for peter however if maskaev decides to box and use lateral movement peter could be in for a suprise if not a SHOCK.
I've said this since the fight was in talks a while ago and I'm going to stick with it. Oleg by decision. I think he's grown into a tough smart fighter and Peter is going to be sloppy and over aggressive as always. People really look too much into this "chin" thing, which isn't exactly a measureable science to begin with. I will say that Peter has youth and power on his side, and that will be difficult too overcome. But I don't see this being a massacre on either side.Agreed, although I slightly favor Peter to win, by no means do I think it's gonna be a shutout like most people here are saying, they are taking Maskaev out of the picture right away. I wouldn't be surprised if Maskaev pulled out a UD.

Peter is a fighter of great ability but after the last two Toney fights(yeah, I wasn't that convinced by the second one), I'm not sure he's put it all together yet. But I don't see this being a massacre on either side.

But you are a boxer in a boxing business and you been long enought to know :D
peter doesnt just have power though, he can box and use his jab, he learned alot from the toney fights i think
Peter can box?
I saw quite a few of his fights and the first time I saw him throwing more than one punch at the time was in his last fight with Toney. I guess you can call that an ability to box.
Same offer is extended to you..

I agree. I think peter gets him in the 8th. I think maskeav has enough experience to hang with peter early on. eventually peter's tremendous physical strength will do maskeav in. peter is powerful but not a guy that blows quality or even semi quality opponents out early
Maskaev is a stationary target, with a suspect chin. Peter hits hard, and has a much better chin. You and I both know the fight will be fought in a phone booth, and the only person who might actually box is Peter.
It's just a terrible, terrible matchup for Maskaev.
yea,,,,I agree that peter has a much better chin and does stop maskeav but I just dont think it will be as easy and quick as many think. I dont think maskeavs chin is as bad as it was. most of his knockout losses came in succession after that kirk johnson fight when he lost his confidence. we'll see soon enough
I think Maskaev gets stopped within 4 rounds. Peter is a big strong heavy & seems to have learned alot from his 2 fights with Toney. Peter can take a damn good punch but you can't say the same for Maskaev. I can't wait to see his reaction after Peter catches him with a semi clean punch.
