Just watched Berto being dumped on his ass by Cosme and cant see what all the bluster is about?
Yeah he is a contender - but isnt setting the world alight yet?
A puncher would have put him to bed for the night...
Who seen the knockdown?
exactly, couldn't have said it any better.
What I always find funny (and no disrespect to the thread starter as I say this, as it's just meant in general) is the two extremes involved in any major star, contender, prospect or what have you. One side will say this guy is the greatest thing since sliced bread, SRR ain't got shit on him, he's the one to carry the sport on his back. The other side says he ain't shit, first real fighter he faces will expose him, etc. - and then keep moving the bar up as the fighter progresses.
In this case, it's Berto getting dropped and people already running to the pit yelling "SELL SELL." Guy wins 9 outta 10 rounds and the only portion of the fight people focus on is the closing seconds of one round.
That real.
It helped Berto's confidence to come back from that knockdown and have Rivera in trouble later in the fight. It's that kind of experience in overcoming adversity that helps young prospects. Berto needed that kind of fight.
Berto was knocked down by a punch he didn't see, but won every second of every round outside of that one moment. I don't get where everyone is coming from. I was very impressed with Berto and that fight made him a much more seasoned fighter IMO.
Ali was down early in his career, did he turn out to be a bum? How's about that De La Hoya character?
For the last time, Berto wasn't going up against just a nobody on FNFs last week.... Cosme Rivera isn't an easy opponent for anyone, this guy should've gotten the nod vs. Joel Julio

LOL....I couldn't have said this any better..
He got cought by an awkward punch that he didnt see. Nobody is perfect. Not to mention he dominated nearly every minute of every other round. Wtf is wrong with you people?
I saw the knock down and it was legit...Berto start bullshittin too much and got caught..Once he settled back down he finished the fight with a bang..Berto is the truth and would beat most WW's out there..The guy has power and boxing skill but his biggest trait is that he is active..No hype job in Berto playa..

Berto is a bit overhyped in that every major boxing writer is all over his nuts. It's often the case when they're told enough times that so and so is the next big thing, because it's not as if most "top" writers can think for themselves when it comes to scouting talent. On the rare occasion they do step out and declare someone "it", there's usually an agenda behind it (like Joel Julio just so happening to be a part of Main Events)
But he's not a complete fraud, in fact not one at all. It's not the 1990's and NY boxing writers labelling Shannon Briggs the next great heavyweight or anything like that. Berto's got mad talent, and will go far, whether or not the welterweight division thins out anytime soon.
