So it seems a lot of people think Cotto is a warrior who takes on all comers, while Mayweather isa coward who ducks any live challenger and handpicks his opponents?
How is it that Cotto is 27 and 30 fights and he is taking on a 36 years old former lightweight and everyone goes "wow, cotto has balls"
Mayweather at 27 was moving up his 3rd weight class (140) and had already collected the lineal title at 130 at 135.
Am I missing something?
That being said,
1) I am very happy with the Cotto-Mosley fight which will surely be exciting, and may the best man win!
2) And I am still extremey disappointed by Mayweather's choice of opponents between Castillo and Judah.
Mayweather gets all of this hate because A) he's p4p number 1, and B) he's a rightful cunt, or atleast thats what the Brits say. Yes, there is a double standard, but Cotto isnt known as the best fighter in the world either.
In retrospect does beating Gatti, Mitchell, Judah, Baldomir look good at all? Every single one of those guys went on to be demolished. Now I dont think this is Floyd's fault. Its more like bad luck that the Welterweight division just blossomed in the past year when he was busy fighting DLH or being "retired". However we cant help but look back and think he took the easy way. The three guys he beat at Welterweight arent even in the top ten. The three guys he beat at 140 arent even in the top 10. We have no idea how good Oscar really is eventhough he looked good against Floyd.
Ill be honest, I think he has a choice between Hatton and Mosley and he's taking Hatton because it's the much easier fight. It doesnt matter though because Hatton is a top 10 p4p guy, so you have to give him his props on this fight.
I don't think serious fans consider floyd a "pussy". he's fought 5 or 6 top fighters in his career, and he's fighting a p4p guy next up in Hatton.
I don't like the term "warrior", all these guys are pro boxers - what I'd say instead is that I prefer to watch Cotto's come forward relentless style over Mayweather's stick and move. Nothing to do with bravery at all.
For starters i think it's wrong to band the word coward about, especially where world class boxers are concerned, it just makes you look a tw*t.
I'm not a Pretty Boy fan at all, can't stand him, having said that, you cannot help but acknowledge the fact he's an awesome boxer, regardless of what anyone says. Also if you think most current fighters have not at some point avoided certain fights, not out of fear as such but political reasons (ie. money, marketability) you're being very naive.
How a guy can go from super-featherweight, to lightweight, to light-welterweight, to welterweight, to light middleweight beating some of the best if not the best along the way, and picking up world titles in each can be considered a coward is ridiculous.
Hate him if you want, i'm not at all keen, but come on, this guy deserves credit.
:boxing:
Because in a fight.. Me, as a non-boxer. (I can fight, not box) I'd rather fight Hatton then Mosley. Hatton is there to get hit, and swing wide.. Mosley.. not so much. Cotto is young, career-wsie too. Whereas, Mayweather is the p4p best. He deserves the credit for that, but deserves the critism for taking a while to take the top challenges.
This is the general opinion now. But if it were Floyd fighting Shane and Cotto fighting Hatton, people would complain that Floyd is fighting an old man and once again hand-picking opponents, while Cotto-Hatton is a can't miss Fight of the Year contender.
Much like when Floyd was going to fight Spinks, everyone bitched that he was a paper champ at 147 and not pursuing the real title. Then he ditches the Spinks fight and instead agrees to face Baldomir. What happens? People bitch that he's not fighting Margarito.
I'm surprised people aren't bitching that he's not fighting Paul Williams.
All that said, your reasons perfectly sum up the pulse of this thread. Cotto is more exciting, therefore fans are more willing to cut him slack. But in the end, they're just excuses.
Also Cotto is not young, career-wise. This is his 7th year as a pro. By year 7, Floyd:
- already won Fighter of the Year (1998)
- tore through then-undefeated and P4P entrant Diego Corrales
- moved up to LW, and twice defeated Jose Luis Castillo, who was LW champ going into their first fight.
- was universally regarded as the best in two weight classes (130 and 135)
Cotto hasn't come within sniffing distance of any of those achievements.
Also for what it's worth, the Cotto-Floyd fight was on the table, but Arum decided to go in another direction. Arum's quote on the subject: "Floyd just made $20 million. He's retired, and won't return until he spends that $20 million." I guess Floyd got through spending that $20 million! LOL
There is a double-standard, and it has everything to do with how they fight. Honestly, it's no different than fans saying without hesitation that Corrales and Gatti are going to the Hall of Fame, yet question if Floyd's done enough. ?!
just remember this
warriors take there respect now because there styles are crowd pleasing.
pure boxers go down in history and even tho they get zero credit when there activly fighting the day they hang up the gloves every1 sits down and takes notice of there accomplishments

I like Cotto - he is a warrior but Mayweather has achieved so much more than him. He is super talented and does take on alot of top names. He has stopped cherry picking his opponents for the moment. The way he has adjusted his style to beat bigger opponents easily is admirable. Cotto can't change his style that way - and if he keeps fighting the way he does he will eventually get knocked out.
it's bullshit and all based on the fact that Cotto comes forward, eats punches, and KOs people while Mayweather sticks and moves, hits and doesn't get hit, and wins lopsided decisions. throw in the fact that Cotto is the most active elite fighter in the world today and you have a recipe for a double standard.
anybody claiming Cotto is doing more than Mayweather is just talking shit. and while we're at it, why the hell do people say Mayweather is ducking Cotto when Cotto has never even mentioned fighting Mayweather?
I'll always remember the night Mayweather destroyed Gatti and seeing the looks on Hatton and Cotto's faces. they were scared shitless that night.
mayweather has a more active role in who he fights next... Cotto, "i fight whoever"
so... Cotto is a "protected warrior", while Mayweather is a "freelance pussy" who always fought much better comp?

let summarize all this by saying floyd is a bitch slapper....
