McCallum worked for three minutes every round and outlanded him; Toney fought in bursts. Again, great fight and one of those 'whatcha like" bouts. Hell, even their third fight was good. I can watch those two fight all day.
Agree with you on both Griffin fights and McCallum I.
I had Peter I close covering it in the arena; had Toney wider on TV. I did though have McCallum slightly ahead in the forgotten badassery that was McCallum II. That fight happened today and people would bitch like hell in a "what do you like' scoring hell.
Let's not forget though that there ARE other fighters in the discussion. Hell Sam Langford is for sure. Here's the World champs/future HOFers Langford faced:
Gans, Walcott, Jeanette, J. Johnson, Dixie Kid, Ketchell, McVea, O'Brien, Wills, Norfolk, Godfrey, Flowers
Posted a mark of, including three newspaper wins, get this: 21-19-16(draws or NC's) with 12 KOs and only stopped three times against that core group. That's a list that includes a top tenner, arguably, in every class from 135-heavyweight.
Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest fighter to ever lace up a pair of gloves. Ali wanted to be just like him. he had over 170 wins and over 100 by knockout. he had everything. knockout power, great speed, footwork, stamina and a concrete chin. He was the first pound for pound champion. enuff said
Ray-Jones is a bad comparison head to head. Rob's best was 147 but he carried to 160 until the first retirement; Jones best was above 160. Jones best day at middle, Robinson beats him because Ray was seasoned and Roy was still developing. Serious; you're comparing a guy whose best wins at 160 were Castro and an evolving Hopkins. Robinson at 160 (the one who went upside LaMotta and Turpin) was a peak killer. So then it's an issue of who was better P4P and there's really no case for anyone besides Rob ever. He faced SIXTEEN current/former/future UNDISPUTED World champs and had like 24 wins; that doesn't even include top ten cats like Jackie Wilson and Castellani. Roy would have had to skip all the junk (like just about every defense at 168) and unify another division to really get in the race.
Edit: Here are the exact figures:
Robinson faced: Angott, Servo, Zivic, Lamotta, Armstrong, Gavilan, Olson, Turpin, Graziano, Maxim, Fullmer, Basilio, Pender, Downes, Dupas, Giardello
Against that group, he went 24-10-1 with 16 KOs and was stopped once. Five of the losses were after the age of 35. Ridiculous numbers
Sugar Ray Was A Bad Man Im Not Saying That He Wasnt I Just Think Roy Would Be To Strong For Him
I think the opposite, Robinson had a great chin, knockout power and heart!
If Cotto fights Mosley, then i'll be at msg to see him for the third time without a doubt!
I Think Roy Jones In His Prime Out Points Ray Robinson Easy Maybe Knocks Him Out At Middle Weight, Roy Was To Damn Strong
Your crazy, Robinson would knock his ass out!
Louis Had The Power But He Was Way To Slow For Me Love Him To Death But To Slow It Was Something About His Era That Confused Me The Fighting Style Was Kinda Weird
Are You Serious, Do Your Research
What's there to really research?
Larry Holmes was maybe the most complete heavyweight whoever fought. He had every single punch in his arsenal, one of the best attacks, a huge heart, solid chin, and work ethic equal to anyone.
If it's all just opinion and they're "all just fighters" then I'd have to state my opinion in that I'd say Holmes would beat Johnson silly with nonstop straight punches through his gaurd. I don't see how Johnson's defense would have given prime Holmes too many problems when he's just hiding the right hand behind the jab like he did against virtually everyone he beat.
