I'm not going to say anything crazy and call him a contender to beat Mayweather or Mosely or anything like that, but man, I was impressed. That was a very nice display of pressure and counter-punching by Gomez against Gatti. It doesn't say to much considering that Baldomir was able to handle Gatti with relative ease, but I like Gomez. I definately look forward to seeing him fight some more. He is a very exciting and likeable fighter.
But I don't see how you can blame them. What are they supposed to do? Go to the promoter and say, 'hey you don't have to pay me more for being on a TV show, just keep paying me what I made before.'
Gomez, and any other fighter for that matter, are worth what a promoter is willing to pay them to fight. No more and no less.
Wow, you guys are the biggest haters in the world......damn. Nobody is saying Gomez is a world beater or will win a major belt but the kid has worked his ass off and has made a good showing for himself.
It's easy to sit back in a computer chair and TALK about things but this kid is actually doing it. I know he's nothing special as far as talent is concerned, especially with his style and his lack of punching power but he's out there doing it.
Shit I don't care what vehicle I use to get my name across I would do it as well. Weather it be the olympics or the contender series, you got to do what you got to do.
He's not cocky or dissrepectful, on the contrary, he's humble and has a great work ethic and I respect that. Two types of people in this world, those who talk about it and those who do it. And those that talk about it, HATE on the ones doing it. lol
I never said Gomez was cocky or disrespectful, he's a nice, personable, humble kid I even said that in my first post in this thread. I just don't see this kid lasting, he's a featherfisted reality TV star in a division of heavy hitters who are real Contenders. And I'm sorry but we're just not oging to see eye to eye about the reality TV thing, a guy who breaks into boxing through a reality TV show without having paid his dues like all other fighters will never have my respect.
Gomez beat Manfredo, Brinkley and Khaddour on a reality TV show and all of a sudden he's getting big pay days and HBO exposure. Meanwhile the guys who deserve it are busting their ass on ESPN every Wednesday and Friday night, week in week out for little to no money at all.
Bottomline is this, I respect your opinion and I hope you respect mine. But Gomez is in for a rude awakening if he takes this "Contender" shit too seriously.

i agree... you know there were over 30 guys on that show between the two seasons and most of them aint doing crap... i think gomez made himself a star by being a good guy, working hard and being an exciting fighter...
Dude, I just went to Gomez's website and laughed my fucking ass off at this. Thought you might take a look.
I've tried to highlight most of the hilarity. Now I really want to see this kid get crushed, "being used to the full force wars"? What the fuck does this kid know of war? Barrera/Morales, Hagler/Hearns, those were fucking wars!
I don't get it? :ugh:

Most of these guys are delusional. NBC has probably fed most of these guys' ego's. The only kids who actually like these dudes are 8 year old kids who watch the reality TV show.
I need to think of an idea for an avatar to direct all my hatred to Gomez now, after reading that shit I realized that he actually deserves it.
I wouldn't turn down the money. Doesn't change the fact that it aint right.

Following my fight against Carson, injuries and a project up in Thailand kept me away from the ring for more than 7 months. It’s extremely unfit for a boxer to get in the ring with so much time in between. And for the past few years, for one reason or the other, that has been my case. Therefore, when TOC (Tournament of Contenders) offered me to fight in a Special series that was going to be aired on ESPN I accepted. I became one of the 8 elite fighters who were going over sees to Newcastle, England to a accept the challenge for the Sugar Ray Leonard Cup. The 8 Contender 1 and Contender 2 fighters were pined up against UK’s ex-World Champions and up & coming prospects in their home turf in the first ever "Contender Challenge: USA vs UK."
The fighter that I had to fight was Martin Concepcion, an ex National Amateur boxer who held many titles in his homeland, and someone who as a pro, had an 80% KO rate for his victories. Our records had similarities in wins and defeats but he was the bigger, stronger guy and I was the most experience.
During the fight I dominated him from the beginning. I had seen his tapes prior to the fight and predicted an early KO victory, but after the first few rounds, It was evident that he had studied me and trained for me. He kept my at bay with his jab and avoided a left hook to the body at all costs. Although I was winning comfortably, I was still searching for the KO, because I knew that in impressive win over Martin was going to get me to the big fights I had been dreaming of since childhood. Aside from that, I had promised myself that I was going to replace the “good” performances of 2006 with “amazing extra ordinary” ones for 2007.
Through out the fight, from round 1 and up, I kept a professional game plan. I listened to my corners instructions, and even thought I felt “boring” in the ring (being used to the full force wars in the past) I kept my game plan. I hurt Conception more than twice in the fight, and dropped him in the third round with a left hook, but my respect for his KO power kept my at bay until I saw the opportunity in the seventh round. An extremely painful uppercut had him walk away from the fight and after a devastating left hook from me, the referee stepped in to protect the hometown boy and once again I received the KO victory.
The day after the fight I got biggest news an upcoming boxer can get….to fight a huge named fighter and prove once and for all who Alfonso Gomez is and what he can do. My next opponent is the legendary, future hall of fame, human fighting machine, balls made out of steel, most exciting fighter in the World: Arturo “Thunder” Gatti.
I've tried to highlight most of the hilarity. Now I really want to see this kid get crushed, "being used to the full force wars"? What the fuck does this kid know of war? Barrera/Morales, Hagler/Hearns, those were fucking wars!
I think Gomez is actually a good fighter and will be one of the most successful off of the Contender series. In the show he proved he can take the punch of guys that are fighting 2 weight classes above where he is at. Sure Mora and Manfredo aren't the biggest punchers in their division but compared to most 147 pounders they probably hit hard. Gomez on the other hand is clearly limited in some respects and will always have problems with quick handed guys that don't want to brawl with him. He is the type of guy who should be fighting younger prospects to see how good they really are. In today's WW division Gomez may not even be top 15...Mayweather, Margarito, Cintron, Cotto, Williams, Clottey, Judah, Julio, Quintana, Berto, Mosley, Collazo, DLH (possible) just off the top of my head. He may be better off going to 154 at this time.
You can't fault the Contender guys for taking the money that comes with it. Can you blame him for wanting to make more money for his family? Gomez markets himself as a good guy with alot of heart, he's not out there like Mora saying he's the best around and then turning down big-time fights. Give Gomez a break. How many of you would turn down a huge payday at your own jobs because you 'didnt pay your dues'?
gomez didnt beat gatti, the 41 previous fights he had beat gatti, gomez jus put the nail in the coughin. right time right place, anyone would have done it.
and to answer ur question, i dont think that would generate much buzz, but i posted in a previous thread i would like too see cintron gomez after 2 or 3 more fights for gomez. if he can get by cintron, i think he's legit enough...
That was exactly my point. Gomez's people are all excited and proudly proclaiming that he beat a Gatti as if he were in his prime, who by the way was still a B or C class guy even then! I'm sorry but this kid is in for a rude awakening when he ends up looking like Malignaggi after the Cotto fight, don't say I didn't warn him.
And again, I meant that it wouldn't generate any buzz. The problem with Cintron is that he smashes guys too quickly to even get any buzz going, so a first round KO over "the guy who beat Gatti" would do nothing for Cintron career-wise. However I'd love to see if happen if not for the sadist in me.
You're missing the point you puerto rican guido COCKFUCK.
Gomez didn't pay his dues. I didnt see him fighting on ESPN for low money and risking it all to expand his career. No, he got put on a damn reality TV show. Last time I checked just for being a nice guy you shouldn't get massive payday's over guys who are actually TALENTED.
hahahahaa
so whats the difference btwn gomez doing a reality boxing show, and cotto going to the olympics - they're just forums.
you love me, admit it.
Hey, since so many people are talking about his win over Gatti, maybe he should fight Cintron next? Then Cintron can be like, "the man who beat the man who beat Arturo Gatti"? Would that even generate any buzz?

You must spread some reputation around before giving it to Smokin' again.
Same. Id kinda like to see him smashed up by a good fighter so he knows where he stands. He belongs on ESPN.

He looks like he could go even lighter. He's never going to be a world beater in the WW divisison but at LWW? Possible. Apart from Hatton, there's not a lot there.
malignaggi.....
I dislike him because I think he sucks and flat out he does not deserve bigger payday's then guys who actualy battle and pay there dues. Guys like Sharmba Mitchell should of got bigger paydays then this Gomez goofball. Just because he was on a damn reality show too....I hope NBC took all his money.
apparently, there are reasons to dislike him!
its funny you mention sharmba - i literlly back-spaced his name out as gomez's next possible opponent, deleted his name because sharmba is completely shot.
i have to disagree with you however, you have to work your ass off to get on TV and into that show and do what gomez has done.

I can't say I dislike Gomez, but I don't like the guy at all either, flat out. I have a big problem with "reality" tv people trying to stick their nose in the sport that I love. And I'd be lying if I didn't say that part of me hopes Gomez gets squashed in his next fight and is shortly forgotten about.
honestly, whats to dislike about gomez? i can't come up w/ a damn thing.
how great would it be if they went ahead w/ jcc jr. and gomez? but i'm definitely watching this dudes next fight.
its good to see good things happen to good people.
Yea, I have to agree as well. Gatti looked old and done, he shouldn't be allowed to fight anymore. I can see him talking like Meldrick Taylor if he isn't carefull. Gomez lookes like he has nice skills but I agree as well, in that weight class, how far can he go? I thought it was classic how he called out JCC jr, smart on his part, that would generate some interest at least.
Yeah he definately did a smart thing there. but really, "mexican idol"? Alfonso Gomez? I'm not trying to discredit the guy but c'mon......
