I posted this on a very good forum before but never got any real answers. What do refs make...small time to the big time?
Hope Scully chimes in as he'd know more than most. Holla....
what about michael buffer???
how much does that guy earns xDDD..... he must earn a lot :P
I posted earlier that I heard him on the Stern show a few years ago saying he made 'around seven figures'.
I'm assuming the reason as to why that is, is because the old one's are less likely to be bought, experience obviously, and I also think that the refs who get to do the huge PPV events has more to do w/ who they know in the business, than just being the best at it. Jay Nady and Laurence Cole sure as hell suck b*lls. How the hell are they still around?? Friends in high places(haha)............. named Bob and Don.
Cole is still around because of his father. He is a true disgrace as a referee.
Referees generally are paid per card that they work, not per bout. However, the payment amount is determined in large part by how big the gate is (amount of money taken in by paying customers), whether or not the bout is televised, and if there is a championship of some kind involved.
For a regular ,local, untelevised boxing show, an official might make $200-$400 or so, add a couple hundred for television, and for a major fight like a title fight, the ref could make several thousand dollars. However, to work a title fight, a referee must be a member of the sanctioning organization (such as the WBC, WBA, IBF, etc.).
thats a shame....they put up with some of the worst cry baby fuckfaces around.....then again they also make some of the shittiest calls around....it's a toss up.
Hell its like a daycare.I wouldnt give a damn.:lol1:
To be a referee you need conditioning, discipline and knowledge of the sport.
UFC referees get paid $6,000-$10,000 every night they ref so I assume boxing refs get paid the same.
Source???
That sounds like some b/s...alot of fighters dont even make that much but the refs do?
I wonder how one would 'become' a referee. I mean, it's not the sort of thing were you just wake up one morning as a kid and decide "When I grow up I want to be a referee".
the guy below your thread is wrong from what a friend has told me and is doing the following. Maybe in the UK but is that states you have to go through USA boxing.
1. you start judging am's fights...for free
2. then you start reffin am's shows...for free..but I think theres a 50$ travel thing you git.
3. then its off to the pro's...alot of free work still
its not easy being a ref...unless you know peeps.
I'm goin on 2nd generation info. I could be totally wrong here.
I know NBA refs make like 100,000 a year.

You need to get licensed through a State Boxing/Combative Sports Department. I know for small, local shows around here, they make a few hundred dollars.
Not a ref, but Michael Buffer said several years ago on the Stern show he makes 'around seven figures' a year.

It really depends on a few factors, if it is just a local casino show, the refs make $500.00. A major title fight will bring him more, as will a televised fight....
But do well know refs make alot more?I mean shit if they are getting skimped like that they should at least be able to advertise on their bodies like fighters were.....:D

I'd imagine they make alot more from work outside of the ring than they do in it. Not bad though, considering the exposure they get, kind of makes them celebrities in their own way. Funny how today they all have their personal catchphrases etc.
How much skill does it take to be a referee? It cannot be that much, can it? I mean, I'm sure you have to have plenty of boxing knowledge, and have plenty of experience around the ring, but, it's not like a very difficult job I imagine.
