Sounds fishy to me, maybe they paid him to pull out of the fight since RJJ has a done deal to fight Trinidad and Don King wants no risks taken.
I think you might be right. It just doesn't make sense for Hanshaw to say 150 K isn't enough when that is more than he has ever made and he is getting a huge career opportunity to fight a big name who is faded and could be very ripe for an upset.
Plus this happens directly after the Jones-Trinidad fight is worked out. Gotta wonder about that timing since the Hanshaw-Jones contract was signed a while ago and he didn't have a problem with the money until now.
According To BTalk, Hanshaw now says he is fighting RJJ with or without Gary Shaw's support...apparently they offered 30,000 less than the contract agreement of $150,000...but the fight appears back on....who knows whether it will happen or not
This fight isn't off according to FightNews.com.....
Jones and Hanshaw Ready!
Tuesday, June 26 2007
It’s clear that both Roy Jones Jr. and his next opponent, Anthony Hanshaw, are looking to use a victory over each other as a springboard into the fights they truly want. During a telephone conference to discuss their upcoming light heavyweight showdown on July 14 at Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi, both Jones and Hanshaw revealed their dream opponents. “I can’t wait to get to it (a fight with Felix Trinidad), but first I have to deal with Anthony Hanshaw. I’m not taking anybody lightly. First I’ll stop Anthony Hanshaw and then I’ll stop Felix Trinidad,” revealed the former champion. Hanshaw, meanwhile, says a win over Jones would put him in place to settle an old score: “A win will open a lot of doors for me. I’m moving up in weight for this fight, but after this, I’m moving back down to super middleweight. I really want to fight Jermaine Taylor. That’s who beat me in the Olympic trials two weeks before my dad died. That’s who I really want. I wasn’t focused against Taylor. I beat Kelly Pavlik and Sergio Mora, but my mind was not in the fight.”Jones and Hanshaw both say they’ll be at their best on fight night. “I’m anxious and in the best shape of my life and ready to go. I will absolutely knock him out,” growled Hanshaw. “I love the sport, I love my fans. I miss my fans. I want to give them a show to look at with a good opponent,” Jones responded. “I can’t wait for the opportunity to show you all that I ain’t through yet.”
Jones stated that he will fight on July 14th regardless of opponent.
I guess that's good he's still fighting. He needs that ringtime if he's going to challenge any of the big names now or belt holders.
I was never going to tune into the fight anyways, because I would much rather watch any of the fights on HBO, but if this is true it's just another Roy Jones fight that has been cancelled, nothing new I guess.
