Ray Mercer tried his hand at mixed martial arts this weekend. The result? He's sticking with boxing.
The former WBO world heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist lost to noted street fighter Kimbo Slice in Atlantic City, N.J., this weekend in a fight that lasted just 1:12. Mercer submitted to Slice's guillotine choke hold.
"I walked right into his trap," Mercer said, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. "It was like I put my head in his armpit and said, 'Go ahead, choke me.' From now on, I'm sticking to boxing. I can't get choked out in boxing."
Mercer, 46, hasn't fought in the boxing ring since losing in seven rounds to Shannon Briggs in August 2005 in Hollywood, Fla.

I guess Boxers should stick to the sport boxing and let the fighters do the fighting. Kinda sad but true...
Really and alot safer for his old ass i'm glad that he is in mma that will keep his brain safer than boxing
I've made this point on MMA vs boxing threads before. I think MMA is alot safer for the fighters.
Also people are saying Mercer fought Kimbo because he needed the money. That says something that an ex-HW champ is having to fight in a MMA show because he is hard up for money. It actually disgusts me how most boxers are exploited by the managers, promoters and other hangers-on that rob them blind.
Mercer should just stop fighting period, but he probably needs the money. Going back to boxing would make sense because that's what he's best at. He looked confused in the MMA fight against Kimbo and was definitely out of his element. The only thing though is if he goes back to boxing he might get hurt and at his age I think he's already taken enough punishment.
No U CanT Teach An Old Dog New Tricks.. He Probably Didnt Train For Nothing But Boxing Cuz Kimbo Lied And Said He Was Going To Bang With Him .. Then Rushed Him
Thats what I said when I heard about the result. Kimbo said he was gonna stand toe to toe with him. Someone must have told him that he would get his gold teeth knocked out if he did that so he just rushed him. Fuck Kimbo.
That 'hugging, rubbing, and sweating' made Mercer tap.
well really it made him 50k a price most would pay compared to Mercer last few boxing matches it was a walK in the park...

u are worthless go enjoy two men hugging, rubbing, and sweating on a mat somewhere

Someone like Holyfield would say they are going to stand and bang it out toe to toe and he would do it, thats the difference, thats a warrior. Respect and honour. Kimbo did a mayweather.
You may say it was smart for kimbo to go to ground but its not what anyone tuned in to watch.
That's retarded. You should know that too. I'll admit Kimbo beating a 48-year old boxer does not prove boxing sucks, but what is he supposed to do? Fight his opponents fight? Hell, in boxing your hear 'box a puncher and punch a boxer'. You may not think it was honorable, but he won within the rules and took no damage from a hard hitting boxer. And remember, even though Mercer is 48, Kimbo has white belt level BJJ skill, and he made it look easy.
Mental strategy. All part of the MMA game, m'man.

Good on Ray for making 50k and not even being hurt, he blocked all the knees and punches to the head, his face was unblemished, nice payday, compare that to his pummelling by Klitschko where he was really beaten up and only made 12k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kimbo who??? What a pussy he talks like he is the man cause he beat ray n tank yet he didnt want to get in there and mix it up with them did he!!! Mark hunt would knock that chumps head of!!!
Yeah I saw it...what come running straight @ a guy? Dude...Mercer is 45. Try that shit on Cintron and he'll move. If hes so shabby when why is Dana scared to sign him?
Move...where?
And there's two good reasons why Dana won't sign Kermit.
1.) It isn't worth the time nor buildup to see a boxer get his ass handed to him thrice by a Hawk.
2.) WTF is Kermit Cintron? Nobody in Boxing has built Kermit as a big enough name like Mayweather or Cotto or Castillo. I find that fucking shameful.
lol @ people actually thinking Cintron would last more than 2 minutes with Sean Sherk...lol
If Matt Hughes who is a 3 Time All-American Wrestler at Iowa can't stop Sherks takedowns what makes you think some high school wrestler who hasn't wrestled in years can?
Get real people..

Why's he still fighting; does he need the money?
you can bet your bottom dollar that is the ONLY reason he is fighting cause it isn't for the respect, love, or passion cause all those thing went out the window
Yes. Cintron exposed as the high school wrestler that he is.
Did you see the footage? That was textbook 101 on how to stop a heavily favored striker. That's in everybody's notes. What Kimbo did to Mercer is
what would happen to heavy strikers 75%-95% of the time.

About 10 years on average to get a Black Belt. One of the guys at my gym got his in about 8. BJ Penn took about 3 years, but he is just God-gifted. I have been doing it about 4 years now, and I'm only a Blue Belt.
BJJ still has VERY strict standards. You cannot get a Blue until you are at least 16 years old. Those under 16 have different belt colors. You cannot get a Black until you are at least 18.
I see. Thank you.
Some asswipe claimed it is easier to win a WBA title in boxing than to get a black belt in BJJ.
How long does it take the average guy in bjj to get a black belt?
And those that are really talented?

It all depends on the individual. At my gym you have all kinds. Some guys are very good at standup and just can't excel at ground work. Others are terrors on the ground, but just can't get very good at standup. Like on the day I got my Blue belt, one of my friends got his Purple. He started BJJ 8 months AFTER I did. It just came easier to him than me.

I have seen guys on the ultimate fighter who were raw and learned on the show. The deaf guy, who was a college wrestler pretty much only had that to rely on and he is successful. The tall lanky black guy was raw off the street too, and he did pretty well. What Im basically saying is if a boxer were given the chance to learn then I dont see why they couldnt become succesful. Anyways Im rambling...

Does anyone know how to get a street fight with Kimbo? I am asking about the type of fight we have all watched him in online, not an mma fight like he had with Mercer.
Exactly...lets get Cintron in there against Shrek and see what happens....expose!
They'll put Bimbo against Tank...he'll do the same to Abbot. Then he'll start having trouble. They had him as 33...gaha. Dudes like 38.
Cintron is too small. He probably walks around below 190. I heard he was an All American wrestler though, so that combined with his boxing ability gives him a much better chance than any other boxer.

Mercer needs to retire. With the fights he has had in his career he has taken a lot of punches. He is nearing the age of 50. It is really time to quit.

Exactly. Even if Dana White won't sign Cintron(and he wants to prove a point), he is free to go to any smaller promotion and fight. I'll guarantee just about every promoter/matchmaker would kill to get a boxer of his caliber on their cards, as long as he does not price himself out of their range. If he scores a few wins, especially in exciting fashion, Dana would then scoop him up fast.
