imagine stepping into a gym, that first day, the trainer see's you for a second and tells you to go for a run. you come back tired as hell, and then the workouts begin, everyone is doing a lot better than you. you begin to get discouraged, but you remember that you ain't a quitter and you know the rewards can be substantial. you keep going, the trainer is correcting your every move, letting you know just how special you aren't. you go home wondering if boxing is for you.
and do not expect people to think that you are cool just because you box. lets say you get far enough through the first months and start getting fights. no one gives a damn, and i mean no one lol. your family does not really pay attention to or support you boxing. this is a sport in which you do not get praise unless you are at the absolute top. you won't get popular playing this sport lol. if you are on the football team, you get popular fast, chicks paying attention to you and shit just because you are a football player. same with basketball, baseball, soccer. all of those school sports, you get some kind of notariety...not with boxing.
it takes a long time before you can even fight, let alone spar. in other sports, you are doing the sport the first day, not just doing drills. in basketball, you can be sure you will be shooting a basket the first day of practice. baseball, you will be hitting a ball.
football, you will be tackling someone. etc. boxing? you will be running and hitting a bag, not fighting someone. i'm sure it's that way for other fight sports too, then again, you don't see people rushing to those sports do you?
when you step into that ring, it's only you and your fists. you have to put the other guy on his back. and he's fucking coming at you trying to kill you. no one can save you but yourself.
this really is a lonewolf sport.
Good post but...
Its a dope feelin when after winning a am's fight and people are saying "good fight etc." on the way back to the dressing room.
My shit was in the paper and people in my area knew and followed it. I knew the guy @ the news paper and they did a nice story on me. 2nd win the camera was on for local cable access. I felt like a movie star. They played highlights on the cable show.
I know alot of people I never would have met if not for boxing. Theres always haters but most peolpe that know me show respect. Boxing opens up alot of opportunities...you gotta be decent though. I trained w/some names and that helps too. Where I'm from theres been alot of good boxers that spawned here...so boxing is respected.
cool man, that's nice to hear. i guess it depends on different things. some people do get some notariety and others don't.

i like team sports, but individual sports have something else, thats why i like tennis, and of course i love boxing.
and i understand more or less what you say there, thanks for the read.
I really don't like team-sports. There's too many to blame when it doesn't work out like it should.
In boxing, there is only one dipshit you can point your finger at...
right you are!!

very very true. u dont "play" boxing like u play other sports. tex cobb said it best when he said "if u fuck up in tennis, its 15-love, if u fuck up in boxing...its ur ass!" boxing is a lonewolf sport, and its the greatest sport in the world!
True, my friend. True.
Boxing here in Norway is actually very well respected by most people.
They seem to get 10 times more respectfull when they learn that I box, which I really don't mind so much.
But it is not a very popular sport, so there's not very many who train boxing.
It only adds to that feeling you mention, that it is the lonewolf sport...
What you wrote should be given to all newbies when they try boxing, just so they'll realize what exactly they just signed up for :D
