it's a shame that calzaghe wasn't put into the american scene 5 years ago. he is a great fighter, and very entertaining. i honestly believe he is a great fighter. if he was born an american then i have no doubt that he would be a great star in the U.S. he wouldn't be undefeated, but he would have had the respect and recognision in the U.S.
frank warren has only thought of making money for himself. there aren't that many fighters in the uk so he just uses them as cash cows. fair play to hatton for elaving him. i wish frank was more interested in joe's legacy rather than milking the money.
It shows Hatton wants to win things ,whereas Calzaghe must be happy enough with how his careers went and is going upto now.
Bottom line Joes record shows he will go down as an ATG. There are people saying they think this guy could beat JC and that guy wouold be JC and probably knock JC out. Fact is noone has beaten JC.
Yoiu might as well say ok, JC hasnt fought that many great names, but i think he would beat BH's, or JT etc etc and that is why JC will go down as an ATG because of who i think he could beat.
And it is down to that sometimes. JC hasnt fought BH and Co. But he would be favoured to beat them in a lot of peoples minds. So, again, that says a lot.

I take resume and Skill ( Remember this is objective ) into account when i rate a fighter.
This is why i think Ottke is a joke.
Calzaghe - Not the best resume but solid, but with sublime skills ( IMO ) so it balances itself out.
It's also the reason why i rate Ali above Joe Louis.
Oh yeah, i agree, Calzaghe would murder Ottke in the ring, bad style matchup for ottke and he knew it,
thing is $IN did this thread with the achievements of the two on it, ill try and bump it, and to someone who has never seen the two fight or knows about ottke being a part time boxer/robber, Ottke's record looks better on paper. lol.
Serious.
Trust me, in 20 years you have people saying Valuev is an all time great HW
i can see it now
"He almost broke Marciano's record, he only lost once"
:ugh:
One person did get upset actually, wont name names, but yeah anyways i respect your opinion, calzaghe's got fast hands, but he is open to getting tagged clean, and jones was faster and more powerful especially in the opening rounds where he would throw pure power shots just to see if the other guy could handle them, i think people's minds have been clouded by the tarver loss where jones come down from heavyweight, for me the guy who beats jones has to be a good counter puncher with a good defense, im not sure if JC's defense is good enough to stop himself getting hit clean by a prime jones.
I hope you're not insinuating I got upset. Firstly, this is only a forum. Secondly I merely got fed up with you not listening and making things up. You'll learn when you get older.
Calzaghe couldve done alot to enhance his reputation by fighting RJJ when they were both at 168lbs or going all out to fight Hopkins.
Kessler is no RJJ or Hopkins so Calzaghe beating him wont have the same impact as if he beat either of them two.
Wins against Hopkins or RJJ would be true pointers towards Calzaghes greatness.
I think Calzaghe would beat hopkins actually, im not convinced hopkins can handle a guy who throws alot of punches, and hopkins doesnt throw that many himself,
To Oasis Lad, Ottke wasnt too bad of a fighter in his prime, but towards the end it all got a bit messy, he lost about 3 fights lol, Starrie and Reid beat him convincingly, i honestly think someone had a word with him after the reid robbery and said
"Listen sven this cant go on anymore, take one more fight than piss off"
After the reid fight no one ever took him seriously again, if they did at all.

That's a good deduction.
I think we can agree to disagree.
I like you, Tech. We may not share the same ideas or opinions but unlike a lot of people on this board - you express your opinions in an intelligent and thought out way and you are always respectful.
I take my hat off to you.
Thanks alot dude, thing is i cant take compliments very well, but me and my therepist are working on it, (actually the truth lol),
Now lets get back to insulting each other,
Ottke or Calzaghe based on achivments, i think Ottke made more defences had the better belts, now on PAPER who has achived more?
I don't base my prediction on a Calzaghe/Jones fight on the Lacy outcome and neither should you or anyone. I base it on watching Joe throughout his entire career as well as Jones and matching the pair up in my head.
No one got upset, all they did was voice their opinions.

For one, Calzaghe getting any sort of consideration for being a top 500 ATG based on his career is ridiculous. His resume is just pathetically weak. His biggest wins are against guys like Robin Reid, Jeff Lacy, and a faded Chris Eubank. Reid and Lacy have really done nothing in the sport. Calzaghe never had the one marquee fight against a great fighter that would even merit consideration for ATG.
When you talk about Calzaghe's greatness, you have to stick to the super middleweight division. As far as accomplishments, I think he is the greatest 168-pounder of all-time. Keep in mind that this division has only been around since late 70s or early 80s, so it's not like we've had a ton of super middleweights in the history of boxing. Also, 168 has been a pretty weak division for much of its existence.
Based purely on skills, Roy Jones is the best 168 pounder I have ever seen. Prime vs. prime, Jones destroys Calzaghe...
I'd have to disagree. There's been some terrific fighters in that division over the last 15-20 years and it's been a much stronger division than LHW in that time.

I agree, In terms of Achievements Calzaghe is probably the best ever at 168 pounds,
As a fighter, for me the best i ever saw at 168 was roy jones.
I can't - i have watched Joe for his whole career and i can't see anyone stopping him, unless he ages dramatically overnight.
I have seen most of Jones' career and yes at Middle ( and a bit beyond ) he was a murderous puncher but punches don't stop people with chins on power alone - they methodically beat them down. It's the only way.
Jones doesn't beat Joe down, Not in my opinion.
Okay, well i would go for Jones by far in that fight, i dont see how beating Lacy equals having a good chance at roy jones, who was barely a human being at those weights.
I dunno why you lot get upset, there is no shame in not being better than Roy and Jones and James Toney, not many ever were.
Of course there is, i never said JC ducked anyone, all im saying is your fooling yourself if you belive frank warren was serious about Calzaghe fighting Jones, Warren talks but doesnt actually deliver and we all know that, did calzaghe follow jones up to 175 and demand a fight?
no.
Did calzaghe go to america and fight big names to get a fight with Jones?
no.
Did he do enough to make the fight with Jones happen?
no.
Warren cant even organise a fight with friggin Kessler and you think he was serious about a roy jones fight at that stage in their carrers?
:ugh:
PS. I can call out roy jones, he wont fight me, is he ducking me? lol.
Ah I give up. If you can't even understand one simple sentence this isn't going to work.
Calzaghe had brutal power before his hands went too. It could have been one of those "blink and you'll miss it" fights. Both guys are fast as hell and hit hard as hell. Jones was faster, JC's chin is infinitely better. Fuck knows who wins.
In terms of who was better at 168 pounds, at that stage in Jones carrer, was there anything calazaghe did better than Jones? because in my opinion Calzaghe achieved more in the divsion, cos jones moved up and went onto bigger things, but skills wise i dont see anything JC has that could better jones when Jones was at that weight.
Does that mean Calzaghe isnt good?
no.
It just means i dont think he is the best fighter to ever foght at 168.
And yes i could also see Calzaghe going the distance with Jones, JC has a chin, but i could see jones landing on him alot, with the possibily of a KO stoppage.

Great post Technical Skill. Right on point.
Are you so biased, Sin, that you can't see beyond Jones Ko ratio and see that people with skill and a chin ala - Calzaghe could have took him the distance?
First of all im not sin,
Look at the facts, Roy Jones knocked out bigger and stronger men than Calzaghe in his carrer.
Can you not see how he can knockout calzaghe if he keeps landing clean?
:ugh:
It not bias its simple.
Its possible Jones knocks him out, and you obviously havent watched jones at that weight, he had devestating power at 160-175.
I've called Roy out for years to come fight me in Louisville and he hasn't even responded! I mean, I did ask for a ridiculous amount of money and homefield advantage, but come on, Roy! I'm the champ after all. Oh wait, no I'm not. But I AM THE DRAW! No, wait, no I'm not.
