It's the fiighter's job to win, but I do not think Zab had proper mental preperation or strategy. I definitely think he needs to retire "Team Judah" and find a more experienced and more meticulous trainer. I think his career at this point depends on it because as strong as he was against Cotto, he should have won and his obvious lack of perparation was a major contributor to his loss. JMO.
Mr. Anthrax, you make a great point. Honestly, it's not what you say, it's how you say it. However, I do not believe that what was said was beneficial. I mean, fighters know they need to throw punches. Telling him to throw more punches, was a waste of time IMO.
I think Manny or Roache would be great for him. In all honesty, I do agree that Zab has shown major loss of stamina in the latter rounds of a lot of his fights, but I think improvement has been made. I definitely do not think Zab is too old to get in better shape and start using some new tactics. He is only 29, and you have fighters like Hopkins out here doing it. I highly doubt a 29 year old is too old or too stubborn to make some changes.
Zab has oviously made some changes. I am not sure what it was he wanted to "do" when his father stopped him in the beginning of the fight, but proof of his changes are there. I remember when he fought Kosta (sp?). He thought he had him and was getting too excited. He came back to his corner relaxed and his Dad told him you do not have him yet, keep going. Zab did just the opposite of that and got KO. My point, he was obviously not too old to start listening because whatever it was he wanted to do, he did not do. I think that shows growth, which is always possible.
Manny seems to respect Zab a lot as well. He mentioned having regained a lot of respect for Judah after the fight with Cotto. Judah's temperment was even better because I could easily see a Judah from the past throwing a few low ones himself, but the chickens must come home to roost.
[Hey homeboy, send Zab an email bout what u just said....it'll save his career. Honestly I think Manny might wanna pick him up cause he was like all zab has to do is shoot that left up the middle, "i don't know why he's nbot doing it" Yoel kept saying you got to rumble with this guy and I think manny had to think "what the fuCK"
I like this thread because I was having some thoughts about this during the fight, particularly late in the fight. I know several people have mentioned that they think Yoel gave Zab the right advice, but that Zab "just didn't listen."
That may or may not be true, but it needs to be mentioned that HOW a trainer gives instructions is extremely important. I couldn't help but think that someone like Freddy Roach might be a better trainer for Zab.
It's so easy to sit here and say Zab should have have thrown more punches to keep Cotto off of him, but if he was having doubts, or feeling insecure for any reason, maybe someone with a more gentle speaking style like Roach would benifit Zab and his personality.
I wont make excuses for all of Zab's past behavior, but it seems possible to me that based on the fact that Yoel is such an exciteable guy that often seems on the verge of doing something crazy, that Zab learned that attitude from somebody. Like father like son?
They did. Throw more punches, throw the left and you will hurt him. Zab didn't listen and he paid the price he never listens. He didnt listen in the baldomir fight, or Mayweather fight nor this fight he does his own thing. his pops trys his best to motivate him in the corner and Judah sits there like a retard.
that is exactly why they need new blood in the corner if the old formula doesn't work u HAVE to try something new or eat shit and deal with it

oh boy does he need a new team and out look team judah act like judah is tyson wtf they plan for a 3 round fight every dam time and wtf do they be working on??? plz tell me they fight a pressure fighter and judah look like he fucking shock that dudes pressuring him omfg get a new set plz
I think he should have done the change his team after the tsyzu fight.
but he got back to the title after the zoo loss, undisputed title no less. Its a shame all the talented light welters invaded his division, he would have been in the mix after the baldy loss and probably would have gotten straight back to the title.
U can say any fighter might benefit from a proven trainer like roach or manny but they cant train everyone.
I personally think zabs mental problems are all his own doing. He seems to create his own problems in fights where he is more talented, faster and more powerful than his opponents. He started it off with the low blow nonsense. they were low, and plain cheating from cotto (if hatton did that u guys would be all over him) but zab made a huge meal out of it and made it look to cotto like he wasnt up for the fight and was trying to steal a DQ win or a few point deductions. things started to slide for zab from then on and his inabilaty to grit his teeth and throw bombs let him down
Zab's team didn't let him down in terms of game plan. I think they let him down in training. I believe there is something in Zab's preparation for fights that makes him more prone to fade.
In terms of game plan I think Cotto was just too good for Judah to implement his game plan.
Cotto's constant pressure, jab and ability to cut off the ring FORCED Zab into trading a lot mroe than he would've otherwise wanted. Cotto has done this to all the boxers he has faced and everytime a "boxer" ends up trading with Cotto we say that they had a BAD PLAN.
Well there is a pattern here, he is forcing them to fight. Even in the 2nd and 4th round where Zab is still at his best, Cotto still won the round.
Not to take anything away from Cotto but Judah fought a real stupid fight. I think he believes he can bang with anyone and gets suckered into these slugfest with guys that have that style of fighting as their strength.
Judah should have watched the Mayweather vs DLH fight and took a page from Mayweather's book. I know it doesn't make for a popular fight or very exciting but it was his biggest chance of winning. He fought Cotto's fight and after the low blows, really took it personal and stood infront of Cotto the entire night.
Judah is a knucklehead, always has been always will be. He doesn't listent o anyone, not his father, past trainers, advisors...no one. Shame because IMO he's a waste of talent. those two suspensions he suffered really set his career back, if not physically, mentally.
Glad for Cotto though, now hopefully Margarito beats Williams and we can see another great fight between the two fighters we wanted to see fight from the get go.
i've been crowing for a while that Zabs needs to go w/a premiere trainer to bring the best out of him. Is it too late? Cant answer that atm. Let him spend a year or two w/the likes of Roach or Steward. I think Roache is more his style.
Ya'll cant deny his power and fastest hands in any division.
I mentioned Roache for him before. I could even see Mayweather Sr. for him, but that is unlikely. I think he needs (Zab) better defense. He's such a rare combo of power and speed, and with proper training he would be a force.

He can learn some new tricks but his physical skills.. He didnt throw vs cotto not because he didnt know how, but because he couldnt. I'd be amazed if judah could comeback, with a bang. I like judah. He's more pure (although immature) than the averge fighter and he showed tremendous hearth in taking the beating he did. It's sad to see such a talented fighter wasting himself like that. I totally agree he should change the team. How many fighters around this world wish they were just a little bit faster? or had more power? Those two things are the rarest and you cannot teach them to anyone. You're born with it. Zab has both and excelent attacking skills. He lacks a bit more defensive movements: more footwork, (not show off steps, he does that) and HANDS UP when he needs them. I think he should have done the change his team after the tsyzu fight.
I totally agree!!
Has nothing to do with his corner and has everything to do with him. Zab wont even listen to his own father what makes you think he is going to listen to anyone else?
yeah his dad was begging him to throw and he didnt
LOL. Solid point, but I do not think he is too old to learn some new tricks, ya know.

If Zab hasn't changed at this point in his career, I don't see him changing at all. Plus I doubt he would leave "Team Judah" because he's pretty loyal to them and if he left that could hurt their family situation.
Indeed. But, I do think that he needs to grow up and make some business decisions. Everyone has to. Mayweather fired his dad. It may have strained the relationship but it was necessary and now look at him.
His speed is undeniable and he is a powerful puncher. I hope he grows up.
As far as the motivation, yeah Yoel said those things, but, is that real strategy????? I mean, "Hit him with your left", but why? Because you have a good left or because everytime you do, he does...... I think more was necessary is all I am saying, in essence. I do not think his team is professional minded enough or organized enough to take Zab any further and I do think he needs a new trainer. It's unlikely, but.
its probably too late now, but i've always felt zab was better off with another trainer.... joel doesnt impress me at all... if you take away zab's speed, you'd have a below average fighter with a big mouth....
