British promoter Frank Warren has revealed that he offered Australian super middleweight Anthony Mundine a fight with Joe Calzaghe six months ago, but ‘The Man’ turned it down.
“He didn’t want to know. He said, ‘I’m staying in Australia. I don’t want to travel,’” Warren told Richard Freeman and Terry Kennedy on the ‘Big Sports Breakfast’ on Radio 2KY in Sydney on Thursday. “That was about six months ago we made him that offer. That would be a great fight.”
To prove that he wasn’t exaggerating, Warren renewed his offer to Mundine via the ‘Big Sports Breakfast’ hosts.
“We got a date in September, I would love him to come over here,” he said. “Anthony Mundine, I’ll pay him US$2 million to come over here and fight Joe Calzaghe.”
While he has accepted an offer from Mikkel Kessler’s promoter Mogens Palle for Joe Calzaghe to fight in Denmark in September, Warren says he has not heard anything back as yet and nothing is finalised.
I think the Kessler fight will happen, but in November in Denmark to mark 50th promoter anniversary for Palle or some Bullshit like that.
How the fuck could anyone seriously expect Calzaghe to wait a couple of months just so Palle can get his birthday party when he wants it. It's fuckin ludicrous.
Saying that, Mundine as a potential opponent depresses me.
I think the Kessler fight will happen. It just will be a few weeks until they officially announce it.
Kessler wants the fight, so does Calzaghe and so do the public... it will happen, there is too much money to be made for it not to.
I hope you're right, but the silence from Kessler's camp so far does not bode well.

It's so fucking obvious that this Calzaghe/Kessler fight ain't gonna happen, but this time it looks like maybe it's not Warren's fault!! They are scared of Joe it would appear. Mundine would be a good fight, but he's already lost convincingly to Kessler and Kessler went to Australia.
