Everytime MERCHANT interviews the upset winner of a fight, he asks them what it feels like to be the underdog.
And they always reply, "oh it was great, i hope they do it more often."
Wouldnt being the favorite boost ur confidence?
Any ideas why fighters would actually WANT to be the underdog in the biggest fight of there career
The underdog has a psychological advantage over his oponent. Because he's not expected to win, it takes at least some of the pressure off. Consequently, he's able to fight more relaxed and unleash punches with reckless abandon.
The favorite often enters the ring with the psychological "baggage" of having to live up to expectations and prove himself. He can be wound so tightly they can barely get off a punch and fight with too much caution.
1. Proves everyone wrong who says you couldn't do it(that's always satisfying)
2. More marketable, People love underdogs(hence Rocky). Look at Pavlik, one win where he was the underdog in most people's minds, and now everyone's raving about him.same happened with Joe Calzaghe when he fought Lacy.
now everyone has Calzaghe in their p4p top 10  he already should of been

Because it's fun to shock people. Because sometimes being an underdog can give you an edge. Especially if you are so big of a dog that your opponent overlooks you.

Merchant is a dumb retarded old sack of bloody shit from a lepers arse
being the Underdog means you have the odds stacked against you, and persevering is unlikely. But when you do win, it just makes you that much more impressive. I myself like rooting for the underdog, who doesn't? Ever seen "SeaBisquit" (the Horse) run? Just by looking at that small horse, you would think "no way" would he beat a thoroughbred on a 1 1/2 miler. But he did!
yes it can provide motivation because you have someone to push and work towards...
you try to perform much better than everyone expects you too
it depends on how you as an individual take it...
-some would be discouraged by people not thinking they can do it
-some would be encouraged to prove them wrong
-some would be confident and sharp knowing they're the favorite
-some would be too confident, fall asleep or think the fight will be handed to them knowing they're the favorite
It makes victory sweeter and it sometimes means you are facing less pressure which, depending on the individual in question, can be an advantage or disadvantage.
