How prevalent is boxing in Europe and is its popularity increasing? As a boxing fan in the U.S., I always comment that Germany is becoming the "European version of Las Vegas" because so many big fights are happening there and the number of boxers fighting out of Germany seems to be increasing.
However, I've been to parts of Europe but never Germany; so the question is, is my assessment correct or am I mistaken. Also, I will be traveling to Amsterdam in the future and would love to watch a Klitschko, Calzaghe, Povetkin, etc fight in a bar with some European boxing fans. Does anyone know if any of the local bars broadcast big fights happening in Germany or in Britain?
Thoughts/comments?
Yea right, thats funny.. An Irishman from Boston talkin shit about someone going to dive bars.... Yea right..... You were conceived, born raised and educated on the pool table of a dive bar.
You FAIL AGAIN
Dont you ever get tired of that?
Bump.. I will keep bumping this until BostonGuy recovers from his hangover and stops drinking long enough to respond.
When did NSB become the Thunderdome, dickcheese? Your ill conceived attempts at pwnage are exposing you as the dumb new yorker you really are. Oh yeah, and it's you, Derranged, that has the reputation as being boxingscene's resident drunk....
Stop trying to :hijacked: my thread..
The BBC and should have a weekly boxing show. There are enough boxers out there to fill the cards and it would bring boxing back in to the publics imagination. I wouldn't mind two hours of boxing each Saturday night as opposed to Dancing On Ice. We pay the licence fee.
Just say £250,000 a show, and it only costs the BBC £13,000,000 a year. Considering the amount they pay for FA cup rights, thats a bargain.
the olympics did wonders for irish boxing, i see loads of kids being inspiered here, any of our pro fighters who fight in ireland sometimes get shown on tv on r.t.e our on national channels, which is good when it happens! bernard dunnes world title fight is on tv march 21st which im lookin forward too, andy lee is on the undercard, to answer question yea its improveing, but is always going to be behind gaelic football and hurling(our national sports) then its football(soccer), rurby, and golf, and finally BOXING :boxing:
I hope Andy Lee can rebound from the career slump he seems to have fallen into. What about Martin Rogan? He's become kind of a cult favorite after Contender tournament win and wins over Brit favs Audley and Matt Skelton..
Here's a thought.....
Boston sucks.
That means you....
FAIL

If you don't have anything productive to add to my thread go back to the dive bar you crawled outa...:alcoholic:trink26:
Oh yeah, my worst thread > all of your threads combined...
uk to germany on a plane is 1 1/2 hours, it's really not far at all to travel.
the uk has back page and double page spread in newspaper for fighters like calzaghe and hatton leading up to big fights. the news in the uk will cover both fighters on a daily/weekly basis (manchester, wales bbc) leading up to the fight, hatton and calzaghe are the only top names really.
khan and haye are on the way there and froch has got a bit of catching up, he's probably about as famous as maccarinelli.
you should see it in australia, it's crap! sure we got katsidis who is great to watch but some delusional ****ers thing mundine is the 2nd coming of roy jones jr.
Like most people said about the UK, when Hatton or Calzaghe were fighting it would get alot of press but I wouln't say it is in the top 5 choices of sports in the UK.
Wow, I didn't know that Germany was that close. Why don't you do it? You can take some pics and post them up here on boxingscene...
There's a hundred miles to the border from where I live.
I'd love to go but I wouldn't do it by myself. I know noone but myself who'd want to go watch AA. Kessler would be another matter. I have plenty friends who'd love to see him fight.
I'd drive. If I wanted to watch Abraham tomorrow I think I could be there in 3 hours.

I live in england. Well i know 3 people who like boxing. 1 knows nothing about it apart from huge names. 2 know their boxing. I think the reason for the decline in england is it really is hard to watch fights these days unless you have sky or setanta which you have to pay for. The fights on ITV are good but their not the fights to get people hooked. Get big names fighting for free on itv and boxing would be huge over here and then ppv it. Boxing just is not accessible for the average person. With the exception of hatton fans who just follow him.
I mean the average person really couldn't tell you champs in any weight classes anymore. No one i know had even herd of mayweather b4 the hatton fight. Khan got a buzz going with him fighting on itv with huge audiences but then went to ppv and no one talks about him anymore.
Thanks for the response Bat. BTW, have you ever considered making a trip to Germany to watch a fight live? How long a plane ride would it be from Denmark?

Boxing is a tiny sport in Denmark, but Mikkel Kessler is immensely popular. But it's him and him alone that drives the sport. When he fights and it's PPV several sportsbars particularly in Copenhagen shows it. That includes his sisters strip-joint.
In germany the sport is probably booming as they have several worldclass fighters based there. The sport really took off with Henry Maske and Sven Ottke who where 2 popular figures from DDR which definetely hepled. Since then several imports has made it big.
I don't know if sportsbars in the major cities show boxing. Probably not many as boxing is on public service TV. A better answer to your question regarding Germany can probably be given by Zerwas or Tobi.G.
germany seems to have adapoted the klitschko brothers, abraham, chagaev and many other fighters as their own.
they also got a beautiful stadium there for boxing.
I think the Hatton v Mayweather fight, Amir Khan's arrival on the pro scene and Joe Calzaghe's final few fights plus his sports personality of the year award all happening at roughly the same time put boxing in the public eye more so than it had been for a while
Setanta is pretty much the boxing channel, ITV4 regularly has a boxing show and Sky Sports has Prizefighter and Khan/Hatton - so it's doing pretty well
I think most lads have a casual interest in it but there aren't too many "hardcore" fans about
I can't speak for the rest of Europe though, but it seems to be doing great in Germany at least
I thought Europe was a country?
Seriously? You are kidding, right? Europe comprises of about 52 countries.

you speak of europe as if it's one whole country, no one in the UK gives a shit about german boxers or russians and vice versa. i've been to the UK many times (my mother lives there) and boxing is big but not huge there. they only care about their own fighters, calzaghe, hatton, khan, haye and thats about it. they are building froch up now as we speak because calzaghe has retired.
