His power isn't Tommy Hearns like though and I have my reservations about his chin.
i think the whole fascination with williams is just people wishing for another hearns.... a great multi weight champ who just keeps going up and has the body to support it...
but as you stated, he doesent have one punch closing power, which in this case separates a good fighter from a great one.... williams will always be a threat to out point someone all the way up to 160 pounds but his ability to win titles will depend on his punch resistance being world class
Again, its the freak factor. A 6'1 southpaw who throws over a 100 punches every round. Pavlik is awesome too because of his KO's and the fact that he has some size but if he was a 6'4 middleweight who was a southpaw and threw a 100 punches then he would be getting a ton of hype.
oh i agree with you, i know why people are attracted to him, cause i was one of the first people on here going bonkers over the guy for all the reasons you just listed above.... but for my money i just think pavlik is a much better fighter...
plus look at it this way... how long do you think williams can make 147 for?? i really dont see him having more then 3-4 more fights there regardless of what he says... then he will be a 6'1 light middle... while pavlik is a 6.2.5 middleweight who is going to be there as long as he wants... i think if you look at it in those terms pavlik is nearly as big a freak heightwise as williams is.
plus check the punchstate i think pavlik had a 100 punch round and was regularly around 80 against miranda... again comparing that against throwing consistent 90-100 at welter theyre almost identical in output
pavlik doesent have the lefty thing going, which is cute and all, but williams will be vulnerable to big right hands
i guess my point is that williams and pavlik may damn well meet for pavliks middleweight title 3-4 years from now and williams will be the short guy if that is the case.

I think margarito or kermit would take out williams in under 6 rounds. william not nearly in thier class, has a way to go.
on the contrary he has not been hyped up until very recently, even here on boxingscene the majority of people hadnt seen him and didnt know anything about him until he fought mattyse, which was not long ago..
he was only a slight favorite in vegas to beat mattyse, now all of a sudden hes the fashinable choice to beat margarito... id say there is a lot more reason to doubt williams than there was to doubt pavlik, but i still like williams to win the fight, i cant wait to see the odds

Williams was more hyped though so people knew about him more. Also, the attraction to Williams is that he's a freak, ala a Randy Moss. You just dont see guys like him come around very often. Now, does that mean he's really any good? Nope but we'll find out in this next fight

the ironic thing is that miranda fans who were dismissing pavlik as a guy who had only fought bums and blown up lite middles are now gonna jump on the bandwagon of williams, who has a resume pretty much identical to pavliks.

It was cool though seeing Williams in the back of the gym on 24/7 where Oscar was training. I know he had his eye on Mosley & Oscar and probally wanted to get in there some. Ive already called it and said that this is the fight of the year. I dont care what happends before or after, this fight will win it. It will be non stop punching from the opening bell and both guys want to prove that there the shit.
The thing I love most about Williams is that he reminds me of Hearns with his personality. Its like he has no fear and really believes that he is the shit but he isnt super cocky about it. He just has this confidence & swagger about him that seems so real and not fake like alot of guys. He just knows he is a different kind of package. Time to see if he is or not
