i'm always hearing people say "this fight is going to be a snoozefest" usually involving really good fighters. so basically what makes a fight boring or exciting and what makes a PERFECT fight?
What I enjoy in a fight is when there is solid punches being landed pretty consistently. Either one man connecting a lot or both fighters which makes it even better. I like seeing the heart and will of a fighter come out, even if I don't like the guy it makes me respect him a lot more if he show heart and courage in the ring.
I hate fights when the referee is consistently separting the fighters. It just gets frustrating after a while and not enjoyable for me to watch.
i don't totally agree with this ...
Ponce de leon against that Thai, first round, ONE punch ko was exciting, YOU GET EXCITED JUST WATCHING THE REPLAY!! and his last fight against Gerry Penalosa was NO snoozefest...
True that!
everyone loves a war, because we like to see people get hurt bascily, but i love a tech-boxing match, i love watchin floyd mayweather and HL of the older fighters, james toney as well, James Toney vs Evander and Floyd vs Chico are 2 of my fav fights ever
When fighters lack the technical skills no matter how aggressive they are, a fight can still be boring.
Examples of such are:
Daniel Ponce de Leon vs Anybody

i think a good fight is when you can feel the desire of both boxers to win. you feel that the fight is for any of the two, or that in any second ther can be a comeback, so you feel you cant stop watching.
of course the number of punches is good for the eyes, cos you constantly see action, but for example, i recently watched both fights of hearns - leonard, and omg, they were awesome fights. i really didnt knew who was gonna win, and the high level boxing in there was amazing.
thats why i think that mayweather - dlh was a good fight, of course not like hearns - leonard, but not a shity fight like everyone said.
o one sided match is also intersting if that happens because of the great skills of the guy that made the other helpless. like for example diaz - freitas.
I think when both fighters have an actual offense to go with their defense, and good skills then it is a very exciting fight.
recent examples of such are:
R. Marquez vs Israel Vasquez
Barrera vs Marquez

Daniel Ponce de Leon vs Anybody
Ricky Hatton vs Anybody
When fighters only have defense on their mind, or one is too good defensively for his opponent but has no offense fights can also be boring
Recent Examples of such are:
Taylor vs Spinks
Floyd vs DLH
great post.. you pretty much nailed it right on the head.
i concur, great post .::|ULTIMATE|::.
you make some excellent points about having defensive only minded fighters and fighters who are lacking tech skills.
rematches and rubbermatches are fun most of the time. remember the bowe/holyfield trilogy? one of the craziest series of matches i have ever seen.

Hit and Runners kill this sport. They should go run on the track-field
yes, i agree! when two boxers aren't afraid of each other, then there is a real possibility for an exciting fight. who doesn't love a war?
Watch a floyd mayweather fight if youre having troube going to sleep. A Manny Pacquiao fight is like a caffeine.. it let u stay awake all night. But seriously though, I don't care if a fighter is as skilled as mayweather if all that boxer is going to do is run hit, run some more, hit once then run again.. seriously..
- as mentioned, a lot of thrown punches. that or punches that really count. if the boxers aren't throwing up huge numbers, they should atleast be throwing some bombs.
- evenly matched contests. watching one guy dominate a match is just not exciting. it is acceptable if the dominant boxers scores a nice KO - then it is kind of exciting or just fun to watch.
- both boxers hit the canvass. when both of the boxers hit the deck, it is usually a sign that there is an entertaining fight happening.
- lots of blood. always enjoy a bloodbath. if both guys are cut, it makes things that much more interesting. especially if it is over the eyes, then there is a sense of urgency.
What makes a fight interesting to me is a high number of exchanges which feature a good amount of solid connecting punches, the more the better, obviously. Also, throw in some ring showmanship such as RJ's dance/walk + punch combo, or Prince Naseem Hamed's antics, and you got an entertaining bout on your hands.
And yeah, I definitely appreciate a large volume of punches thrown per round ... Paul Williams' style comes to mind.
