Im not the biggest gatti/ward fan ever, but i find it difficult to watch fights like taylor/spinks, taylor/hopkins, just about all mayweather or spinks fights. I just like fights where both guys are clearly trying to win. There's a reason why no hopkins, mayweather, or winky fight would ever even be considered a classic fight.
I like watching more of the Sweet Science of boxing. Defense, footwork, head movement, working off the jab, that sort of stuff.
I agree. I like a big KO as much as the next guy, but a good, skilled fight and a “battle” are not mutually exclusive terms.
In the 1970's and 1980's, my favorite fighters were Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Pipino Cuevas, Roberto Duran, Oscar Bonavena, Bernardo Mercado and Tony Ayala. The only "boxer" I LOVED was Ali.
My best buddy in those days liked Howard Davis, Johnny "Bump City" Bumphus, Tyrone Everett, Sugar Ray Leonard, Edwin Viruet (!?) and anybody else who couldn't whack you out with one shot (although SRL could hit when he chose to)
We had some funny smack talk about each favorites. I always prefer the wars to the more technical "you see one round, you've seen em all" type.
I guess I liek something kind of in between... I don't want to see two p**ys sparring for 12 rounds, but I also don't like seeing two fighters block all the punches with their faces either... I like the first morales-barrera fight, but the gatti-ward fights were almost sickening to watch...
i love stategic boxing matches where you can tell there's alot of thinking going on... call me weird but i'd rather pay my money to see two of the best boxers box for twelve rounds
I like both. But I like to see both fighters react to a little adversity. Or when the fight is even I like to see who will turn it up down the stretch.
I love the all out war its what keep fans entertained you look at the crowd in thefornt row aat ny event they are preety much bored with a tactical fight. When the crowd see the leather flying around they got up and entertained.so i like the all out war personally
I like two technical fighters going at it. Showing good defense, hand speed, and all around abilitly. I like those things, but nothing beats a good all out war, especially if both boxer are skilled. I like them because you see the true heart of each fighter.
lets see, which would i rather watch? mayweather vs baldomir or gatti vs ward?
gee, thats a tough one...
lol!!! could you be more subtle? lol!
personally like a good brawl. nothing like a brawl between 2 skillful fighters. boxing is a form of fighting, so i am disappointed when i see one or both boxers dancing around like they're afraid of being hit. being too technical is not the funnest thing to watch. and the boxing fans are the whole reason that boxers get paid as much as they do. so, naturally, i feel that a boxer should want to entertain the audience. it's one of the reasons why i don't like boxers like mayweather. he's an extremely boring fighter. i like watching technical fighters sometimes, but most of the time i just really want to see how tough a guy is.
kostya tszyu is a perfect example of a fighter who is technically skilled, yet tough and entertaining to the crowd. tszyu is also the perfect example of what good sportsmanship should look like. the perfect fighter all around.
Mostly I see boxing novices and the casual boxing fans who prefer stylishness over actual brawling. It seems to go to the humania pervading the nation at the present time, e.g. save the animals, basketball as a stylistic display, and the move to ban MMA, pit bulldogs, etc. We are in a civilized, "pussy" phase. Of course, a very good boxer who can also handle a very good brawler, preferably taking him out, is a work of art anyone can appreciate I think, people like a prime Roy Jones, Sugar Ray Leonard, etc.... But I think I personally would rather watch a prime Tyson, Foreman, Hagler, Hearns, Benn, etc.
Im not sure its pussification or anything like that, I think its more ppl thinking that theyre better or "smarter" for liking things that the majority dont like, like brawling. Theyre "cooler" and "deeper" because they "understand" phat skillz my nuggyz winky n floyd 4 life
