In this day and age, its better to be safe than sorry. I remember in the Sago Mine disaster, the first reports were everyone except one were alive and well. All the families were happy and relieved. It took a good half hour or so for the real truth to hit, all but one were dead. Because everyone was in a rush to 'break' the story, they caused those families alot of pain.

We were covering every angle to confirm the story before printing something that could lead to a full blown lawsuit. And our defense in court would be "this site had it up, so we put it up with no confirmation from a single source." The Vegas Police Department would not confirm his death, only that there was an accident. A call to the promoter was made, who heard the news, but had no confirmation himself. Before going up with something like that, we wanted to contact a few sources to confirm, not run a race as to who gets the news of a person dying up first.
