MMA is where it is because people want to see Knockouts, not sparring (like in boxing).
The gloves that Oscar and Floyd were wearing could not have been 8oz gloves as they used to. Vegas are responsible for increasing the glove size. Funny since Vegas allow MMA to wear those tiny little gloves.
Anybody know what size gloves Dempsey, Jack Johnson, Louis, Robinson, Pep, etc. were wearing?
Glove Size per era, per weight class, anybody know?
I do remember seeing fights with Marciano and even Foreman wearing 8oz gloves.
Even one match with Ali when he fought some German person (or I think he was German), the gloves he was wearing looked small, almost reminded me of bag gloves.
Tyson even had at least one fight with 8oz gloves.
I am tired of the big sparring gloves being worn: Too many people can just sit there and block ala Winky Wright.
This is the other problem: gloves should fit like a fist, not like a pillow, wide and puffy.
Boxing should decrease ring size a bit so that you cannot run all over the place. Enough room for someone to get out of the way, but not enough to run a marathon.
I want to see boxing step its game up to compete with MMA.
The downside to MMA, in my opinion, is the boring ground attacks/grappling. Not many seem to have the skill set in their hand attacks as elite boxers, although I admit it is harder for them to "master" when they have to be well rounded in everything.
I am not saying Heavyweights should wear 4oz gloves, but 8oz gloves would be nice, with lower weight divisions wearing 5-7 (which I am not even sure they make odd number oz gloves, but somebody should consider it if they could).
"Reyes" glovs should only be worn or at least make sure all the gloves fit a standard of measurement with how thick/puffy they are. Kind of like how Hockey measures the Goalie's leg pads.
dude, you need to replace "8oz" with "6oz" in the OP. Fighters have been using 8oz gloves for a while.
do you know what the gloves sizes are for each weightclass?
Actually, the heavier the glove, the more likely a KO can occur from a flush shot. Kinetic energy, you see. The padding is good to help prevent cuts, and to protect hands, but in reality, doesn't affect the likelihood of a KO much at all. With smaller gloves and less padding, you see fewer KO's, but more blood, broken faces and hands. Larger gloves also make it less likely for permanent damage to occur from an accidental (or intentional) rabbit punch.
The reason you see more KO's in MMA is because those fighters are somewhat less experienced and skilled, and simply aren't as good at slipping punches and defending themselves.
And smaller rings don't matter that much less you have one guy that refuses to engage (Mayweather, anyone?).
All this death talk is nonsense, we are talking about two men throwing punches at eachother, what do you think can happen?
How about we just ban this "barbaric" sport if we have been pussified.
Lets also not get carried away, it may be an "off topic" argument, but alcohol kills more people per year, yet where is the outrage compared.
On that note, let us start putting people devouring the garbage they eat every day on television, another cause of many deaths, much more than boxing.
We have to look at ourselves closely in a mirror and decide who we want to be and what type of society we want to live in.
Larry Merchant had a point tonight.
Smallers gloves and smaller rings would definitely benefit boxing in general.
Take that "tap and run" or "one punch and run" style to amateurs.
Pro fighters shouldn't fight like that. People wouldn't pay to watch boxing if every fighter fought that way. That would just drown the sport even deeper.
If it were up to me, I'd keep the gloves the way they are but rescind the new 10 oz welterweight and up glove rule. Put that back to 8oz.
Ring should be smaller, no doubt.
Anybody notice Larry mentioning this very same topic tonight (after the Taylor vs. Spinks fight), Smaller ring, Smaller gloves....different results, better fights
How big were the gloves for the DLH-Mayweather fight? I think they were 10 oz which I don't have a problem with but if boxers are wearing 12oz gloves you might have a point.
The amount of times the brain smashes into the skull is what causes the most long term damage not the hardest hit, so smaller gloves are safer for fighters. There would be less cuts only because there would be far fewer rounds as well. I think they should give it a go.
What was the deal with Pacquiao-Morales and glove type? Morales stood in and took Pacquiao's hardest shots in those closing rounds of their first (i think) fight but when Pacquiao was allowed to wear his "fighters gloves" in the secon fight he destroyed him with his power. I may have this mixed up but either way I'm wondering what the difference is between these two types of gloves and if there's such a big difference in two identical fights then it seems like it would really change things.
I think your actually less likely to get braindamaged wearing like 4oz gloves but there'd be alot more damage to hands and more cuts and broken bones. There'd be less like one punch knockouts as well. They should use 8oz gloves even at heavyweight but I really don't like seeing guys where the huge gloves at lower weight class because it's to hard to get punches through the guard.
imo boxing will be and will always be better than mma. why? because there's more money with boxing esp. if you have the talent. every upcoming young talented fighter in the wolrd would always think that he could earn more with boxing then mma. so why take the risk and earn less? If the GBP and other good promoters who promised us to clean up boxing then 4 sure we won't be waiting long enough to see a new boxing hero :boxing:
With popularity and demand the pay will definitely increase. MMA is still very very young so in 5-10 years the money will be going up. Just give it alittle time.
The problem is boxing is losing potential stars to the NFL, NBA and MLB. Kids see Ali and see what a mess he is and he was one of the greatest of all-time. They don't want to end up like that plus, they can make a ton more in any of those other sports compared to boxing.
this is a sensible argument.
smaller gloves are less dangerous because a fighter who takes a flush shot will get knocked out immediately and not pummeled for 12 rounds.
To get knocked out from one punch is less damaging to the brain that being constantly smacked aorund for 12 rounds.
Smaller rings are a good idea too, it would stop the stupid running laps tactic that seems to spoil the excitement of fights.
If you use the smaller gloves, I'm gonna bet that a bigger percentage of fights will be stopped on cuts. No one likes to see that. I prefer the winner to be determined by KO, ref stoppage, or a descision. Any good, close fight stopped by a cut leaves the fans feeling they were robbed of seeing the 'true' winner of the fight.
Cutting down the ring size will reduce the importance of a key point in the Sweet Science, ring generalship. IMO, the one thing that would be a very quick fix for boxing's current troubles would be to get over all the bickering managers, promoters, and federations bullshit and make sure the best fight the best. Give the fans the great matchups they want and ONE TRUE champion per weight class and I think boxing can begin to regain old fans who left as well as new fans too.
