Remember what James "Bonecrusher" Smith did when he faced Tyson? That fight was an all time disappointment because instead of firing away, Smith just looked to grab and hold on whenever they got close.

exactly! Wlad fought smart. Even George Foreman said so. You do what you have to do to take a fighters weapons away from him, whether that be being evasive, wrapping your man up, or counterpunching. Wlad did the right thing and fought the right fight.
