When current WBO super featherweight champion Joan Guzman (27-0, 17 KOs) moves up to challenge WBO lightweight champion Mike Katsidis (22-0, 20 KOs) for his title on May 26th, he will have a new but well known face in his corner. Fightnews broke the news April 16th that Floyd Mayweather Sr. is the new head trainer for Guzman. Mayweather Sr. has trained several high profile fighters including boxing's two biggest names in Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya, who ironically will be fighting each other in boxing's most anticipated fight of the year May 5th.
The always confident and well dressed Mayweather Sr. took time out from his busy schedule to speak with Fightnews about his newest client. Mayweather spoke on what he can add to Guzman's style, how Guzman will win his third title in three different divisions May 27th, and where he rates Guzman to boxing's pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.
What's your thoughts on Guzman so far ?
Were just starting to work together but I could tell right away that he's got unbelievable talent.
What adjustments are you going to have Guzman make?
Honestly he doesn't need a lot of changes . He has already won two world championships in two different weight divisions. There are a few adjustments offensively and defensively that I'll add, and those things will produce immediate positive results.
What do you think of his upcoming opponent?
I saw Katsidis's last fight against Graham Earl and he showed good power in dropping Earl but he was also dropped. He seems to be a tough fighter but Guzman is a more complete fighter and will beat him decisively.
You trained both Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya. Both of whom are the top pound for pound fighters in the world. How much pressure is it for a fighter like Guzman to be trained by you knowing the high profile list of fighters you have trained ?
I'm sure there is some pressure there but I made it known to Guzman from the beginning that I believe in him and that I'm here to help add to the superb talent that he already has. I guarantee you that all the hard work that he and I will put in before this fight and the new things that I will teach him will lead to his best performance to date.
You guided Floyd Mayweather Jr's boxing career from a child to a world champion as a man. He is perceived as boxing best pound for pound fighter. Where would you rate Guzman?
With Floyd Jr. being number one Joan can be no less than number two with me now training him. He already possessed outstanding skills before me, so at worst he is boxing's number two pound-for-pound fighter. On HBO May 27th all the world will see that this is true and Guzman will win his third world title in three different divisions.
Guzman might not of faced any really big names, but he's been trying to get the matches with them for some time now.
Seems too much of a risk-reward situation for the Pacquiao's, Barrera's & Marquez's of the current scene.
Real shame, as I'd edge him over the current version of MAB, Pacquiao a toss-up, & a slight edge to JMM based on styles.
Any of them would be a great fight.
He has faced some pretty good fighters, has been consistently superb in his showings, & think you can tell a lot about him from that.
Against Katsidas - I feel Katsidas has the potential to be a major force at Lightweight/Junior Welter, but he doesn't have the experience at this stage of his career to deal with likes of Guzman, & think it's a bone-head move by his promoters in taking the fight.
See Guzman winning a wide decision, even though he's really at most a Junior-Lightweight. Too fast, too skilled.
so what senior means is TOP 2 P4P POTENTIAL lol
Guzman has the skills to be in the P4P top ten, but he needs to beat the top fighters in the SFW and LW divisions to be considered #2 P4P. A fight with Pac would be exciting I hope Guzman gets that chance to see if he is for real not.
damn i just had a dream that katsidis KO'd him. but thats all it was. just a dream. GUZMAN wide UD.
just like to mention that usually dreams are in reverse ...
I would put him in the top 15 to 20 P4P.But certaintly not at #2..Im impressed that he keeps moving up in weight. But in doing so,he still hasn't beaten anyone truly elite.
You have a point but anyone who saw the Barrios fight knows that the split decision was bullshit. Guzman dominated Barrios & that judge needs his eyes checked.
LOL exacly, Guzman outbrawled and outboxed Barrios,it was a clear UD for Guzman
Exactly. Sure he has skill.
But skill is measured against top guys.
And remember this is the guy who got a split decision against a slow, clubbing Barrios.

Uh so, number two eh sr?
What about your Son, What about Ronald "Winky" Wright, What about Manny Pacquiao, and What about the Marquez Brothers?
Lay off those twenty pieces and switch the ten piece rock you smoke.
what he said....

true
they're relying/reasoning/basing on his POTENTIAL. if he can at least beat any of the following we can say that he's on his way.
Humberto Sotto
Edwin Valero
JMM
Freitas
Diaz
and at age 30 he should make his move IMMEDIATELY.
so what senior means is TOP 2 P4P POTENTIAL lol
@ miron add pac on that list and his well on his way to TOP 1 ... lol
Im really hoping they make PAC-Guzman soon. so that we can truly determine if he is for real. they made a very good job at hyping him BTW.
i'd like to see that soon myself but how ? Guzman is moving to lightweight ...
guzman hasnt faught anyone yet to make thoe type of claims :ugh:

I agree Miron. Hopefully these two will clash within guzman's next two fights.
wow, this are great news. this is gonna be great for guzman, and lets see how far he can get, ill be looking forward to see his evolution with mayweather sr.
Man, Guzman could turn frighteningly good with Floyd Sr. He's like a crazy more offensive style version of Floyd. I just hope he stays that way and doesn't get changed too much into a defensive fighter as Floyd Sr. would probably teach him. Just teach him nice defense when he needs it but keep him the offensive fighter he is. This guy could seriously be #1 P4P if he takes on big names. I'd give him a 75% chance at beating Manny and like a 100% chance at anyone else in the division.
