The on again off again battle between WBO heavyweight champ Shannon Briggs of Brooklyn, N.Y., (48-4-1, 42 KOs) and WBO # 1 rated contender Sultan Ibragimov, of Russia but now also residing in Brooklyn, N.Y. (20-0-1, 17 KO's) is back on. Both fighter's appeared at New York City's famed night-spot, The Copacabana, to announce their June 2nd match at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. The quiet and reserved Ibragimov thanked promoters and handlers for the opportunity, while Briggs stated he enjoyed being heavyweight champ and vowed not to let the title slip from his hands.
WTF is that !!!!!!!!!
Lyakovich? Ray Mercer? Granted Sergei did basically pass out and Mercer was washed up, but only Lennox Lewis had been able to stop Mercer prior and Sergei was able to take Lamon Brewster's best stuff and still be fine at the end of the fight. You can't question Briggs natural power. It is obvious. What you can question is whether or not he can actually throw the punches to hurt someone with or not.
serge was knocked out by light hitting mo harris and on the deck and within a hair of getting stopped by an out of shape brewster. mercer was a shell of himself and was destroyed by wlad 5 years earlier and the shot briggs stopped him with was a blatant foul behind mercers back. sure briggs has power but its not at the level that many make it out to be or he'd have stopped the botha's,,,mccline,,,wilsons,,,and field's of the world
briggs looks dangerous against tomatoe cans but has still yet to be able to knock out an even semi durable heavyweight

I kinda' like this fight, especially if it means we end-up seeing less of Shannon Briggs afterwords.
Really though, I like Iggy's power in both hands, but he comes in throwing wide wide wide open and can be countered hard by someone with patience. Briggs is not the smartest guy in the ring, but he can lay back and take some big shots to get the smaller Iggy close, and then pop him when he's swinging with both hands.
If Iggy shows-up condtioned, which I expect this old version of Shanoon won't, then it's not a long night for Iggy.
Clearly, Briggs' conditioning will be the deciding factor in this fight. If he comes into this fight bulked up and overweight then Sultan will be able to exploit this, take the fight into later rounds, and go for the KO or decision.
In order to do this, Sultan has got to fight a "fast" fight and avoid Briggs' power punches. After wearing him out in the early to mid rounds, he can open up like he did with Mora and pray he's not countered with any bombs Briggs can muster.
Both fighters have not looked great, but at least we know how dangerous Briggs can be against a top fighter. That first round KO by Ibragimov looked impressive, but it was only against Mora. I still think Briggs is one of the most dangerous fighters out there in the division and that we should see Ibragimov's chin being tested. I just can't see how some people can be positive of a certain outcome in this fight as one fighter is unpredictable and the other largely untested. I'm leaning towards Briggs but no more than that.

Beating Mora in less than a round did not impress you? After this fight, the Briggs hype will finally die and Sultan will be recognized for what he truly is: a top five contender worthy of a belt.
I was refering to the Austin fight, Mora is a joke, waste of time. The Austin fight made me sick just when I was begining to like Sultan he messed up against a bum. Briggs can punch and is a danger to anybody in the division and trading with him is not what Sultan should do, you know hes going to do it but if he does hes going to go to sleep..
I like Briggs, but he is wasting his natural talent by not training hard. He reminds me so much of the heavyweight division of the 80's when Greg Page, Michael Dokes, Pinklon Thomas, Trevor Berbick, Gerrie Coetzee, etc would do enough to get TO the title then get lazy and let down once they HAD the title. And the title of Heavyweight Champion of the World became a hot potatoe.

Briggs is hyped? He looked like total shit in his last outing, its just Sergey looked even worse.
Thank You.... everybody seems to forget that the Liakhovich who fought Brewster was out of the Solar system the night he fought Briggs..
Judging Ibragimov by his last performance I woud say that he looses this one but we all know thats not how boxing is. Briggs is a much better figter then Austin and is a pretty good counterpuncher Im thinking Briggs wins this by knockout...

if he comes in over 220 lbs he's a total joke. I would think he'd have learned his lesson on coming in out of shape. if he's in shape he should be able to weather an early storm and take briggs out late
