I feel that with as many robberies Valuev got away with in the passed, this fight could have gone either way.. but 117-111? :dunno:
I kind of agree with the commentator, this fight was kind of hard to score.. and I wouldn't be surprised if the judges gave it to Valuev.
What are your thoughts?
Chagaev had a gameplan and executed it. I always said that the two ways of beating Valuev is the outside counterpunching game or the inside swarming game, and Chagaev opted for the former.
Here is what Valuev said himself (quoted from Fightnews.com)
Quote-
"I did not throw enough punches and also had trouble finding my feet. I am respectful of my opponent and have to admit that the decision was okay. The better fighter won....There is no reason for me to put myself into a coffin. I will keep boxing and will be good enough to move back up the rankings in the WBA and get a new title shot soon. I hope Ruslan will stay champion long enough for me to get a second chance. I would be happy to box him again."
Seems & sounds like a class guy. Good luck to him in the future.
I cant stand you!! This was a good heavyweight fight. Like baserocks said Valuev is verry difficult to fight but Chagaev did verry well, better than anyone else before. He had a good gameplan and hes stuck to it the whole fight, Chagaev and his trainer studied Valuev well and had the perfect gameplan to beat the giant. Chagaev made Valuev miss and ducked under most of Valuevs punches and i dont think Chagaev was slo, his hands were pretty fast IMO. he also has improved his footwork. Chagaev normally is a agressive fighter comming forward but in this fight he did everything well and stuck to the gameplan!
I rank Chagaev the 3rd best heavyweight right now, Nr.1 Wladimir and Nr.2 Peter
I agree, Chagaev is the best boxer (maybe after Wlad?) of any legit heavyweight right now, although I'll still put Peter ahead of him.
Robbed or not robbed heavyweight fights should not end in desicions like that. Chagaev won this fight I had at 115-113, but Valuev did good in a few of those last rounds and a draw would have also been a pretty fair result, that being said I dont think Ruslan will hang around for long..
Valuev won rounds 8, 10 and 11. Nothing else. I really can't see why people thought it was such a close fight.
I also think he was about ready to go down in the last 90 sec.s of the fight.
At several points in the fight Chagaev could have rushe Valuev and maybe gotten him out, but he obviously had a huge points lead (except not according to two judges, apparently) and so remained conservative.
Soprano, this fight was very easy to score and 117-111 is correct. Valuev might have fooled a few people with two or three hundred pawing jabs that did not land, but if you watch for clean punching you'll see that seven rounds go very clearly Chagaev. A draw is an impossible score, anywhere between 115-113 and 119-109 is believable but 117-111 is correct. It wasn't hard at all.
yes squealpiggy I agree that having 7 close rounds could lead to large variances in scoring. But to me I didn't see 7 close rounds. I saw maybe 5, 2 I gave to valuev and 3 to chagaev. The rest were clearly Valuev's. Even 5 close rounds were stretching it. I thought it was very easy to score, I was never thinking too much after a round about who to give it to.
Wasn't Chagaev the one in trouble by the end of the fight? To me it seemed just that Chagaev was out of his league. Not in talent sense, but he was just fighting someone way too big.
5 close rounds is five points, 117-111 is only six points different, so my point still stands.
robbed? you're kidding. he got mugged.

They both suck though, that fight was horrible. Now, I know why hbo didn't want it... Slow as molasses, both of them were slow as hell. Wlad would kill either of them. And I change my mind. Briggs can beat Chagaev. I didn't know that they both threw so damn slow. I know their heavyweights but thats ridiculous that they throw like they are so out of shape.

Well, keep in mind Valuev is a difficult guy to look good against, especially when your basically a foot shorter and 100 pounds lighter. I thought that Chagaev fought a very measured and strategic fight, and just basically did what it took to win. I wouldnt wanna underrate him based on that performance.
Ther where people thinking Chagaev vs. Valuev is a mismatch and Chagaev is not good ect. but today Chagaev showed that he is a solid fighter and has ended the freak show!! Bye Bye Valuev!!
yeah, valuevs been way overrated. Sure hes a difficult guy to fight due to his size, but i knew his days were numbered, i thought that chagaev had the goods to beat him, but i was counting on corrupt judges to give it to valuev. Luckily that wasnt the case, not that i woulda cried robbery if valuev had won, thats just what i was thinking before the fight, but i thought Chagaev deserved the nod.

does down king now have co-promotion of chagaev for his next 3 fights??
im curious if maybe since this was valuevs last fight under king ol donny boy decided to fuck big nicky over on the scorecards
I thought it was close and could have gone either way, but I'm glad that Valuev didn't break Rockys record (whew! that would've made me wish Holmes had). I do think Chagaev was landing better and was the more excitin fighter. If Chagaev could really punch, he may have gotten Valuev out of there. I mean maybe Valuev just has a McCall-like chin, but White tyson looked more like White-Byrd despite his 22w/17ko's. And for everyone who watched online, I hope you also caught it on FSN. I almost didn't.
Wow, I'm very surprised at so many people agreeing that Valuev wasn't robbed. Albeit I watched the fight on an internet stream (thank you so much whoever it was on this forum for pointing it out!). So the video at times was a little jerky. Maybe Chagaev was lightening fast and I just missed his punches.
According to my scorecard he won 3 rounds. As I wrote in my round by round, he was 2, 3 or 10 weight divisions too small to be competitive in this fight. Was my stream that bad where I barely saw Chagaev land any punches at all in at least 6-7 of the rounds? Then just far fewer in 2-3 of them? Wasn't Chagaev hurt in the final seconds of the bout?
I actually thought it was amusing that Chagaev was trying to attack for much of the 12th round. As if he had a realistic chance of knocking Valuev out or winning. What was interesting to me was Don King at the end of the fight. Right after they finished and well before the scores were tallied, Don King said, "that was a GOOD fight, well deserved." And then he stopped himself short. I felt he knew the outcome already and was trying to pretend it wasn't a robbery. It was actually that statement, not the blatantly fake theatrics by Chagaev, that caused me to think we might be in for a robbery here.
But so many people don't think this was a robbery. So it was either the internet stream quality or my eyes that probably failed me. Maybe both...
I saw it on the stream too. From my point of view it seemed like Chagaev was landing the best punches. Valuev is so big that it's almost hard to see Chagaev. Chagaev to me was more aggressive and had better ring generalship. Valuev seem to stalk Chagaev the whole fight and seem to just use his jab unless he got him in the corner and he let go a little more. It was close, but IMO it was the right decision.
