11.04.07 - Mogens Palle is wondering whether WBO super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe, who now admits he broke his left hand in his "cartoon fight" with no-hoper Peter Manfredo Saturday night in Wales, will actually face any credible or capable opponent in London July 21.
"Where can promoter Frank Warren find a doctor who would advise a boxer who breaks his hand to fight on two month's rest? I find Calzaghe and Warren to be like "Alice In Wonderland" as things just get "curiouser and curiouser" with them. Maybe I should say it's "Joe In Warrenland," Palle said
We know now that Warren has another punch bag, cartoon type opponent in mind for July. Warren's next trick will be Dennis Inkin or someone of his limited ilk who Joe can beat up with his injured left hand tied behind his back,." Europe's leading promoter for 50 years said. "Warren comes up with one novelty act after another but this would be a classic British Panto show. Warren does not mind stinking up all of London with Inkin."
Palle repeated his constant assertion that his undefeated WBC-WBA super middleweight champ Mikkel "Viking Warrior" Kessler stands ready to go to the United Kingdom in September for a unification bout against the unbeaten Calzaghe. Palle said he and Kessler will accept terms and conditions of "complete parity" or a 50-50 all revenue split for the much-anticipated showdown
Have you forgotten how many people came to see the Bika fight?
It was no where as close...No one in Denmark knows who Calzaghe is that logic works both ways and Kessler sold out literally against a nobody in denmark, Manfredo was a named fighter in the US and UK hence these were the numbers, Your trying to say Manfredo had nothing to do with how many people came int hat fight (35,101) and by the way that was'nt calzaghe alone who puts asses on the seats, it was because of Amir Khan too, hes a big name here in UK, past few fights Khan has been on the undercard to the main events of Heavyweights and big british named fighters, but whoever I ask they say they went to see the Khan fight, literally whoever I ask, some say they went to watch Danny Williams and Calzaghe, etc but most of them say they wanted to see the Amir Khan fight.
Joe Calzaghe could sell out 35,000 tickets in Wales fighting you one week and then me the next week, trust me on this.
You heard boos when Khan's fight was ended. You heard a huge ovasion when Calzaghe came out and absolutely nobody booed when the fight was finished.
The Welsh fans are ridiculously passionate and supportive of their sportsman.
I think Palle's smart to demand 50/50 split. He will get it too. Warren has finally realized that he's not gonna get a big US fight unless jc holds major belts. You're not gonna get jermain taylor to risk a loss over the wbo belt. Not many americans give a rat's ass about that belt. JC needs to bring a real belt into a fight. Kessler's got two.(wba+wbc) The way it looks now with Kess getting more US exposure, he's actually way closer to getting a big $ fight than jc is.
You are wrong. Pure and simple. Calzaghe could fight any old tomato can in Wales and he'd sell out. Last time I checked, Manchester wasn't in Wales so comparing the two crowds is more than a little spurious. I can't believe anyone could serious argue that Manfredo brought in the crowds.
Crap!
Calzaghe fighting another no-name is only a draw in the UK.
Calzaghe's latests two fights have basicly been non-events seen from outside the UK. The momentum he gained fighting Lacy he has basicly wasted away.
Only way Calzaghe becomes a draw in the US and the rest of the world again, is if he starts taking meaningfull fights.
Kessler is pretty much the ONLY meaningfull fight as SMW. Even though Kessler himself is not that recognizable, the significance of the fight for the division is there for all to see.
IF a Calzaghe-Kessler fight gets sgned, it will pick up momentum big time before the fight takes place.
Only other option for Calzaghe (other than more no-names) are big US names from outside SMW. It would generate more money than a Kessler fight. But the american counterpart would also have much, much higher demands - especially if Warren keeps insisting on a UK setting.
true! Now if JC wants a legitimate legacy than he needs a fighter like Kessler to unify the division and bring in the bigger competition from overseas.
I want the fight to happen and I like Kessler, but you are INSANE if you think they should give Kessler/Palle 50-50. 60-40 would be generous enough.
what better options does he really have? maybe the split is weighted for Kesslers drawing ability but the revenue each fighter would make is well worth Joe swallowing his pride and splitting.
So Kessler should get more because of the lack of competition, regardless of what he brings to the table? At least you're living up to your name. A word to the wise lad, Calzaghe is already the draw in the division - in the UK or US.
Why doesn't Palle come up with a realistic offer for this fight? I'm sure a man of his undoubted standing could make a suitable offer to Calzaghe/Warren? I'm sure he could even book a venue in the UK if he tried hard enough. Come on Palle - put your money where your mouth is. Book a venue in the UK for September or whenever and make an offer to Calzaghe.
The irony of the lack of travelling I'm sure is lost on no-one.
a fair deal for kessler should be 70-30 for cal.
Crap!

Warren should come up with a better offer with a reasonable date. I'm sure the 50:50 could be negotiated.
Kessler would probably be ready for a fight sooner than Taylor, and to unify the division would certainly be a better setup for Hopkins (who could catch big other fights), than a worthless fight with Inkin.
Either way, Warren should try very hard to negotiate these fights before running off..
"We know the public badly wants this fight. I think Joe and Enzo Calzaghe, being sportsmen, really want it also. The burr in the saddle, the unreasonable man, stopping this from taking place is Fearless Frank Warren. I guess that, when it comes to Kessler's skills, he is not fearless but my phone, my fax machine and my email remain open to a reasonable offer. If he turns into Fair Frank Warren, it will be a done deal. In the meantime, let Joe and Frank keep stinking with the Manfredos and the Inkins. Public be damned, that's Warren policy. He is putting the "con" in consumer when it comes to fooling fight fans.
That much I agree with and respect.
dont call me one-sided,you allways said Kessler has done shit to deserve a shot against Calzaghe, but you think it`s ok for Bika and Manfredo,so who is ridiculous
You ARE one sided. Kessler HASNT done enough to make Calzaghe want to fight him more than Hopkins, Wright or Taylor. If he beat any of them, he'd be given recognition and respect. If he beat Kessler...we dont know what will happen yet. I never said that I wanted Calzaghe to fight Bika or Manfredo. I never did.
You cannot discuss anything outside of Kessler and Calzaghe. You cannot see any side of the argument other than the one you are presented from one-sided people...like Palle and Kessler. Thats why you are one-sided.
If Kessler has to fight in London, he should get 50-50...
Of the purse, perhaps. But not of the TV rights and distribution deal.
Make no mistake, Mogens Palle is a scumbag as well. I know fighters of his who, more than a year into their deal, still don't have a copy of their contract with him. This makes them powerless. He can do anything he wants, pay them anything he wants.
You are so ridiculously one-sided. I'm no fan of Warren and I DO want Calzaghe to fight Kessler, but do you not think that your man Palle could be just as full of shit and just as unscrupulous? I'm a fan of Calzaghe, not Warren. You it seems cannot believe that anyone involved with Kessler could be Warren-like.
50-50 in England if it means that Palle will be getting some of the TV rights too at a date a whole 2 months later than the one Warren is proposing is no more likely than what Warren was offering. Calzaghe is the big draw, he is the one that will be bringing all of the fans into the stadium, he is the top draw in the division. A 50-50 split is insulting to him.
Not even slightly correct. Trust me, nobody in the UK knows who Kessler is and Calzaghe would've brought in 35,000 to Cardiff fighting me.

And Palle said further
"Kessler left Denmark in his first title defense, going to Australia to face their Anthony Mundine in a real fight, not a fantasy, cartoon fight against an actor playing a role as a boxer on a reality TV show," Palle said. "No one argues that it is Kessler and Calzaghe who are the two best 168-pounders in the world. On HBO's Calzaghe-Manfredo telecast, the great American trainer, Emanuel Steward, said it without hestiation and added that Kessler-Calzaghe is the only super middleweight fight that fight fans worldwide want to see now."
Palle and Kessler just concluded a brief but successful USA media trip, during which Kessler was in studio guest for ESPN2's Friday Night Fights and huddled with HBO officials. Palle said Americans should get used to seeing Kessler in their country.
"He is not a stay at home like Calzaghe. He is a Viking Warrior and they travel to other lands without compunction," Palle said. "Mikkel was well received by all the TV excutives and, in a phone interview by boxing legend Roy Jones. It was a good trip and, coupled with HBO's March 24 airing of Kessler's brilliant performance in defeating rugged Librado Andrade, Kessler is now known across America and getting more well known each passing day. Andrade is a tough guy and that's a reality. He's no actor from a well-scripted fantasy program. He threw heavy punches at Kessler for 12 full rounds."
Finally, Palle said that a check of the Internet boxing chat and discussion groups worldwide shows a constant thread of fans who want to see Calzaghe and Kessler settle the super middleweight supremacy debate in the proper place, the boxing ring.
"Kessler has now invaded America and he dearly wants to fight there. He makes no bones, broken or otherwise, about wanting to fight the world's best--Calazaghe, Jermain Taylor, Bernard Hopkins and Winky Wright. If the American fighters won't travel, Kessler will come to the USA and it's the same with Calzaghe. If he wants to face Mikkel in his Caridff backyard, he can pay for this home ring advantage," Palle said.
"We know the public badly wants this fight. I think Joe and Enzo Calzaghe, being sportsmen, really want it also. The burr in the saddle, the unreasonable man, stopping this from taking place is Fearless Frank Warren. Quite right. Anyone who thinks the reason there was a big crowd for Calzaghe's homecoming was his opponent they're deluded. If anything a fight against a name at the Millennium Stadium could have conceivably filled it.

Calzaghe might be the bigger draw but not my much, actually its pretty much even, Kessler-Andrade sold out 22,000 seats and Andrade is literally a nobody, Kessler is a household name in Denmark and a big one as well, you could probably ask a non casual fan in denmark if they know him and they will tell you yes, Calzaghe-Manfredo sold 35,000+ but thats not only because of Calzaghe, Manfredo had a lot to do with it as he is a big name in USA and in UK as well due to the Contender.
Not even slightly correct. Trust me, nobody in the UK knows who Kessler is and Calzaghe would've brought in 35,000 to Cardiff fighting me.
You know I honestly don't know how Calzaghe can fight on July 21.
I mean, it would take 4-6 weeks for his fracture to heal. Then he would have to do light training for a few more weeks, then do proper training for a few more weeks as well as sparring. How can he be ready for July 21?
