Upon hearing the rumors that IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko is contemplating fighting Lamon Brewster in a rematch this summer, a very disappointed Juan Carlos Gomez (41-1, 35 KOs) let his feelings be known. Gomez recently returned to Los Angeles to begin training for what he hoped was a showdown with Klitschko this summer in Germany. Gomez gave his thoughts of a Klitschko/Brewster rematch, why Klitschko should fight him instead, and how the fans in Germany deserve a Gomez-Klitschko fight.
How is training going?
It’s going well. I arrived in Los Angeles from Germany a few weeks ago. My trainer Phil Paolina already has me doing intense workouts so that I’ll be prepared for my next fight.
Do you have a fight scheduled already?
I was hoping I would be fighting Wladimir Klitschko this summer. He has a fight date but no official opponent as of yet. I want to be that opponent. I’m ready and available.
How deep were the negotiations for a fight between you and Klitschko?
All I know is my manager Jesse Rodriguez was doing his job by making Klitschko’s people aware that we were willing to take the fight and then I heard that he’s going to fight Lamon Brewster. I have no idea why he wants to fight him. He gains nothing by fighting Brewster. Brewster has everything to gain and nothing to lose. A win over Klitschko and Brewster is back on top. Imagine if Klitschko were lose to Brewster again it would be devastating to his career.
Why should he fight you?
A fight between he and I in Germany would be a mega fight and very lucrative to say the least. We are both megastars there. HBO would air that fight in a heartbeat. A Brewster fight is not a money fight at all. Brewster has no title and he’s not a mandatory. If revenge is his motive then he should be fighting me first. I defeated him in the amateurs in 1993. I have no problems giving him his rematch.
Anything you want to say in closing?
Yes. To team Klitschko. Don’t let such a huge fight in Germany slip by. Fans in Germany have supported both of us through out our entire careers. Let’s not cheat them out of such a great fight. Taking a chance against Brewster is not worth it. A fight between me and Klitschko can happen in his next scheduled fight for this summer. Everyone on my team is okay with the fight. Just send me the contract to sign.
No matter how good his skills are the guy was ko'd by Yanqui Diaz.Does anyone really think he can take the power of Wladimir.
nope, one good right hand and hes folding like a tent, just like everyone else these days

These are just plain weird, SSS #2? Next thing we know, we'll see SSS fighting Thompson for the mandatory challanger status, that'll be the day! And how the hell is Rahman #6? He shouldn't be there at all. And who the hell are Donnell Holmes and Tomasz Bonin? Stranger rankings are only found on Boxrec and that's saying something.
It would be a good matchup but Im not sure that fight would sell considering gomez hasnt beat anyone of note and most people that dont follow the heavyweight division very closely dont even know who gomez is
Gomez needs to beat a top ten heavyweight and keep throwing his name about to get peoples' attention. He's one of those fighters most people won't want to fight, which is a problem.
Those rankings I posted are an absolute joke BTW.
i wonder when we get hw unification
man fuck it, if we not gonna get unification i think we should get some exciting fights like lewis vs briggs (98).:headbang: ;)
I don't think it's fair to base his chin on that fight; he's fought and beaten better fighters, he just came into that fight unfocused and with a lot of problems, and suffered a freak loss. I don't think he even needs to knock Klitschko out, I think he may be the only boxer capable of outboxing Klitschko. Gomez is quick on his feet, rangy, and has more power than most give him credit for. It could be an interesting fight.
yea,,,I think gomez is underrated and better than most people think but it still makes me cringe knowing he got knocked out by diaz. that is true but gomez can fight taller on his toes for a whole fight, wlad doesnt like to fight movers
i still think Wlads power would be to much for 'shaky chin' Gomez!
Did he kick the habit yet or is he gonna come out white nosed again?
He produced a negative drug test sample after the McCall fight, to dispute the earlier claims.
I think gomez has good skills but I dont think he has the chin and punching power to really threaten wlad. if that guy with tits knocked him out I can only imagine what wlad would do to him

i disagree with that.. he was off 2 years before that fight and he probably saw diaz had only 10 pro fights and thought it would be easy.. not knowing diaz had 300 amature fights.. im still not sold on wlad.. hes still being protected by steward.. steward thinks hes slick and knows how to pick oppents that wlad can shine on ... this would be a good competitive fight..
i wanna see good fights.. the heavyweighs suck becuse the good fights arent made
The one good thing about this is the fact that his name is being thrown into the ring on a regular basis. I think a Klitschko fight is unrealistic at this point, but if he beats someone in the top 10, I don't see any reason this fight shouldn't be made.
Gomez is one of the most dangerous boxers Klitschko could face. I can't see there being a fight between the pair anytime soon. All Gomez can do is try and beat a named opponent and earn a shot at one of these so-called champions. I've felt Gomez could be heavyweight champion since way back in 2003.

I for one think that Gomez has a lot of potential but he hasn't beeten anyone at all. He also got ko'd in the first round by Sloth, who has been ko'd by everyone else. Gomez needs to beet a top ten fighter before callin out Wladdy.
