How do you feel about a fighter who pops alot of shit?..
Are we just a different generation, or is there a different standard when we choose to accept a mouthy fighter based on who's doing the talking?
Ali seemed appreciated for it very early in his career.
We have all seen footage of him screaming "I'm the King of the World!" while standing right next to guys like Ray Robinson and Joe Louis.
He was a kid at the time..
That seems offensive to me even knowing Ali's story and how it ended.. He laid claim, eventually.
Still, Ali was loved for it at the time.
(please, not so much with the answers telling me it was "how he did it..")
People seem to hate Mayweather for talk..
Talk in general seems to upset people.
What gives?
Quality.
One of the most underrated Heavyweights of all time.
that was the first time i ever saw byrd fight, i was a fan of his for life after that, and i loved when he did the same thing to james thunder, teeing off on thunder's face while thunder had that glazed look in his eyes
sometimes the trash talk can really add to the fight. my favorite trash talk story ever was in 95 or 96 i think, and it involved chris byrd. byrd was gonna fight this guy tim puller on tv, and before the fight puller went on tv saying byrd was nothing and he held up a stuffed tweety bird and said " this is chris byrd " and then punched it. well, he was right about one thing, the fight did end in a TKO stoppage, of byrd teeing off on puller's face until the ref had enough. i was laughing my ass off after that

I picked that I love it when they talk shit and for the most part I do.I like it when Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins, and Floyd Mayweather talk trash and then for the most part back it up.I don't like James Toney trash talk as most times his fat ass couldn't back it up and Antonio Tarver he almost never backed up his promise of violence.
That's a good way to put it. I agree. :fing02:
Solely depends on who's doing the talking.
If it's Miranda saying truthful things about Taylor and Dibella I encourage it. But if it's Floyd Mayweather Jr talking about how much money he makes and how good of a fighter he is compared to everyone else.....that's where I draw the line.

No he wasn't. His last fight before his layoff against Zora Foley everybody in the stadium is booing him. It didn't seem like he became very popular until his second title reign when he fought Foreman and Frazier for the 3rd time. I think Ali's antics are what it made socially acceptable in boxing to act like Mayweather does but it's kinda funny some of the shit some guys say in promoting fights.
the only thing i hate about ali is that he was a fucking asshole with frazier...frazier is a great man
say what you want about his reasons, truth is, he was an ungrateful bitch...
I dont mind talk.. When it's just a fighter building himself up.. Fighters need to be confident and a little Psychological warfare is part of the game..
Its also acceptable if it's FUNNY and that is key.. Funny does NOT mean RUDE or disrespectful..BUt Funny.. Think Ali.. Rude.. Think Toney.. Disrespectful.. Think Floyd Mayweather..
By disrespectful I mean Putting down the guys you are fighting.. This just makes you look bad when you beat them.. because you have been calling them shit.. It belittles your OWN win.. Better to give the guy some respect ..Then when you win You beat a top a fighter .. not some BUM..
The public knows who the best is. If a fighter needs to yell "I'm fighting the best!", Chances are that he's a bit of a bluffer.

I LOVE boxers who talk shit! I don't want a quiet humble ass boxer. If the shit talker loses and still talks shit thats even better. To me it shows confidence and desire to be the best, even if he's not.
IMO it it purely for marketing reasons.
One thing is for sure is whoever is doing the talkin better back it up with their fists. Iv no problem with it when a fighter actually does what he says he is going to do.
Audley for example said he was goin to be world champ. Now he looks rather silly.
Shit talkers and havin heart have little to do with each other in general......its often the opposite.
I was being sarcastic.
I still like them, though.
well ali was a 9-1 underdog, completely written off, and every single guy on press row predicted liston to knock him out... that was just a giant theatrical "i told you so" and im pretty sure id have done something similar myselfi think a lot of people felt so dumb for writing him off as a loudmouth that they were willing to roll with it from there on out. ali fought everyone, anywhere, anytime...he brought a lot more good than bad... he was a worldwise celebrity
whereas floyd... has he ever been an underdog?? people dont want to hear a guy talk shit when everyone knows hes fighting below his level and gonna whoop his opponents ass...
plus whether you like it or not ali's style of brashness was rather original.. whereas floyd is just another in a long line of arrogant fighters who spout the same old garbage weve all heard a thousand times...
to me ali outside the ring was an alter ego to the fighter, he was pretending, it was theatre... his tone was comical.... mayweathers tone of trash talk usually borders on contemptuous and his delivery is very sarcastic... probably reminds a lot of people of "that one asshole" that they know
You isolated that moment well.. But the point for me is; Ali was a massive talker, period.
I think that a little drama at the press conference is noble. It's like giving a fight before a fight.
Shit-talkers have the most heart for that.

To me it depends who is talking it somewhat.......but for the most part I find it intriging and makes the fights more interesting especially if you are trying to get a friend who does not care much for boxing to watch with you.
