Mesi returns April 14!
By Bob Caico
"Baby" Joe Mesi from Buffalo, NY will continue his quest for top ten status when he takes on Marvin Hill (20-10, 16 KOs) on April 14 in Russellville, Arkansas. Mesi (34-0, 27 KOs) has been training in Puerto Rico and claims to be in great shape. Team Mesi had three possible fights planned against quality opposition on bigger cards with national television exposure scheduled through the summer. Manager Jack Mesi reports that those fights have been nixed so they scrambled to take a fight and settled for this card in Arkansas. Mesi does not feel this 10-rounder is a tune-up but just a chance to stay busy and not waste the time he has been spending training for bigger fights. The card promoted by Stacey Goodson features undefeated local heavyweight, J.D. Chapman (25-0).
Mesi won an impressive first round KO over DaVarrell Williamson. It took Wlad to the fifth round (and TOS was even ahead on one scorecard when the fight was stopped!). TOS easily defeated Corey Sanders, who beat Oleg Maskaev.
Barrett is a solid, above average journeyman - his going the distance with Mesi does not reflect badly on Joe. Barrett took big Valuev to the 11th round, and was willing to continue but his corner stopped the fight.
I agree. its no crime being taken the distance by monte barret and having a tough fight with him. barret did dominate dom guinn who's far from a world beater but a descent fighter and barret gave rahman a very tough fight as well. he was giving valuev trouble as well until the size and strength of the giant overwhelmed him
His skills haven't diminished any. In order for that to happen, he would have had to have had skills to begin with. Look at his resume. He has fought three okay fighters. One was David Izon, pretty much the definition of a C level fighter. Izon's claim to fame was being competitive with David Tua, that or his KO win over Lou Savarese. Joe won that fairly convincingly and it was easily his best performance. But... the other two? Monte Barret? The dude LOST to Lance Whitaker. He lost to him! And Joe beats him by split decision. Hardly impressive. Every good heavyweight that has faced Barret has disposed of him with ease. Mesi also fought Jirov, who is by no means a heavyweight, and was put on his ass three times, narrowly squeaking out a decision he might not have even deserved.
At best Mesi was a C+ fighter before the bleeding on the brain. Why would anyone think he could succeed now?
only wlad and valuev have stopped barret. rahman won a close decison over him and barret fought whitaker when whit was a descent fighter and highly ranked in his prime and many people thought barret won that fight. mesi's most impressive win wasnt the izon fight,,,,it was his 1 round blow out of tos. either way,,,I agree with you that mesi isnt going to win a title. I dont think he would have before the jirov fight either. his defense and chin lacks too much..but I'd say he's a descent b level fighter

your insane.
his skills are gone.
his refelexes are lax, he has no footwork, barley and defense and even his power isnt all there.
He will get hurt badly when he steps up.
You didn't answer my question: Did you see his last fight? He fought and Ko'd a typical tomato can fighter, however, he looked pretty damn sharp doing so. He's doing the same thing as Evander is in his comeback. Easy, let's give the guy the benefit of the doubt, he is still undefeated.
Severly diminished skills? Did you see his last fight; he took the guy out in less than 2 minutes!
In all fairness to Joe, let's give him a chance before writing him off all together.

According to boxrec.com, JD Chapman (25-0) is going to be fighting on the same card as Joe Mesi on April 14. Too bad I can't be there!
Too bad they're not fighting one another; do know if this will be televised?
Mesi is not a good fighter.
He conducting himself with class has nothing to do with his severly diminished abilitites.

Joe Mesi sucks, can he even beat the top 30
FYI Williamson is ranked in the top 30. Mesi knocked him out in the first round.

Stupid post; what's your basis for thinking he sucks? Is it the 34-0 record or the fact that he(mesi) conducts himself with class? Explain yourself. :tool: :chairshot

Why doesn't Mesi travel over to Germany to get a few fights? The talent pool over there is deep and it's becoming the norm for hw's to travel over there.
He cant get a top 20 guy to fight him. He is to big a risk for little reward. He makes money, but not when he is fighting outside on NY and it seems that it will be a while before he gets back there.
But if he stays busy the WBC will put him in the top twenty soon. He is currently at 29.
