Constantly on this forum I am hearing people slating fighters like Joe Calzaghe and Chris John for staying at home and fighting rather than going to the States. But we hear virtually nothing about the fact that many US fighters NEVER fight outside of the States. This even extends to 'legends' like Roy Jones Jr, Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather, none of whom have fought a single fight outside of the good ol' US of A. Now if you say they're not fighting in their backyard because they move around the country - well Joe Calzaghe has fought in Newcastle, Manchester, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Bristol and London, as well as having fought in Denmark and Germany (against a guy that only he had previously defeated and whom had stopped Charles Brewer) - something Roy Jones dared not do for fear of being robbed.
But it's not only Americans that feel this way. Chris John has got virtually no recognition whatsoever for his victory over Marquez apparently because it was in Indonesia. Say what you want about that fight, but it was an extremely close one. If it's unfair to expect Marquez to travel all that way why is the reverse not so?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the Americans I stated above don't deserve the recognition they've got. They were and are all great fighters. But ulitmately, why does it matter where a fight is held? If the standard of opposition is good then it shouldnt matter. Ali managed to fight all over the world and win, because he was good enough.
And if you say that in America you never get a duff decision, how's about these beauties? Oscar De La Hoya/Shane Mosley 2, Lennox Lewis/Evander Holyfield 1, Vernon Forrest/Ike Quartey, Johnny Tapia/Manuel Medina, Everett/Escalada, Kid Gavilan/Johnny Saxton, Foreman/Briggs etc etc. I could go on. Now of course there are bad decisions that happen away from the States too, but there are just as many that happen on the Strip and around the country as happen abroad.
Now, a fair criticism of Calzaghe would be that he's never fought a great fighter. That's fair enough. But to criticise him and others for WHERE they fought them is, frankly, moronic.
Ive always believed its not where u fight, its who u fight.
If a fighter wont come to u, and u want it bad enough, then u should go to him.
BUT
Boxing as a business is all about money. And America is where its at.
Fans + TV = $$$$$
America is all about exposure, and without exposure big fights and big pay days wont happen.
Simple math.
That's true. When Nigel Benn fought in Italy that was disgraceful the way they tried to cheat him out of it, then being pelted with coins and bottles on the way out! Nige and his boys loved it though! :)
but i dont think other fighter are going to italy and the same with england because it too dangerous if the english whant a mega fight coming to there way there fans should behave even if the judging score is fair or unfair but at least the fight does get hurt in some extrnal way like bottle and maybe other things.
It is rubbish. You're suggesting that rabbit punching and cheating goes on more in England than America, but it isnt. Just like you guys claimed that an American ref would disqualify Hatton for 'hugging' and 'headbutting' and in a match where he supposedly did more cheating than ever before...nothing was said.
no i saying if it done in you hometown and the ref is not doing anything and the supporter are okay with it and if you take control the all boo and look like they going to emerge outta of the stadium it hard to concentrat and hooligans history in england is famous from liverpool-juvy and many other thing and if a mega boxing fight is her and you know the hometown boy is not winning then you gotta problem. and it mostly more of a lose lose to the forgineer coming there.

Thats rubbish.
well it isnt rubbish at all as a promoter i would want to hurt my fighter in any way inside the ring or outside the ring so i going not going to england.
i think he Hatton lost in britian or Nigel Benn ot any superfight that is lost sorry not britian but england in spec fairly i think it could change boxing abit for both sides
there are some thing like the Kostya Tszyu fight and the G-Man which people left diffeculty in fighting there.
there first thing is the boxers saftey and and fair judgment and if i went there and and think maybe the ref is going to let the brit hit be a rabbit punch i would go there.
Thats rubbish.
another thing is Hagler vs Minter in UK where Hagler won and the hooligans threw some bottles toward Hagler probably testing his shaved head and even if fighter won the fight by KO there is a big possiablity that Hooligans interfy and imagine if they cant control them in a big football stadium what about in a small boxing staduim where is just few meters away to getting you ass kick by thousands angry english fans waiting just wait what happen to Kosta when he enter the ring against Hatton
That simply is no more likely to happen in England than anywhere else anymore.

Well the title of the thread is a legitimate question, no matter what nonsense the rest of it turned into.
For instance, there is probably not one US fight fan (besides me) who will criticize Jones for not going to Germany to fight Michalczewski. When they'd tear a new ass to a Euro fighter for not coming to the US to face the champ in a second.
Just one of many examples. As someone else said, when Rahman get's knocked unconscious by an average puncher, there's very little said about his chin. When Wlad gets dropped 4 times by a big puncher and gets up every time, then his chin is pure glass. And then Ottke is thought of as a legend in Germany, from what I understand, and rarely criticized. And of course, we all know how Eubank and Benn get turned into absolute flawless demi-gods by a few on here, because they hail from the same country.
So now, this isn't just us in the US. All countries overrate their fighters to some extent and show them favoritism. It's perfectly natural. What isn't is to write as though you are completely neutral while trying to invent and spin in favor of your countryman, which happens quite a bit. Some of it is conscious spin, some is just nonsense spewed by people who, quite frankly, aren't that bright and don't even realize they aren't being objective.
Either way, asking sports fans to be objectively rank their countrymen against foreigners is like asking pigs to fly. That's what message boards are for! ;) So have fun with it!
Wire, Good post. But comparing the continents, a fighter is more likely to lose a fight by hometown decision either in Europe or Asia. Yes, there are hometown decisions in the US but not as much as in Europe or Asia.
U also have to understand that in boxing(like basketball, hockey, baseball, and other sports), the US is where they make the most money.
It looks like we've managed to whittle down the nature of the question to the true question that is really being asked. We know why the fights in the States matter to the boxers. The US is the mecca of boxing, I'm prepared to concede that. There is more money paid to top boxers in the US, I can concede that point as well. It's obvious why boxing in the US matters to European fighters. But now we reach the real question: Why does it matter to US fans where a fighter earns his victories? Who do US fans even care where a fighter peddles his trade?
And this is the problem area.
i do not begrudge any UK fighter who stays in the UK, calzone included. hatton or calzone can easily pack 20,000 people in the arena in the UK. here in america, big name fights usually draw around 8,000.
the fans in the UK are fanatical, so why wouldnt calzone want to stay in the UK? the fans are much more appreciative, the gate is much much bigger, they get more money, while in america, he'd probly get booed out of the building either because he fights a boring fight or just because hes a foreigner.
the same can NOT be said for german fighters. they stay in germany because of the security and the bias. the crowds are slightly bigger than american crowds and only slightly more enthusiastic. so it cant be the crowd nor the gate that keeps them in germany.
UK fighters stay in the UK cuz they love the fans and the fans love them.
german fighters stay in germany cuz they know that they have a 99.9% chance of winning.
american fighters stay in america cuz they're a bunch of spoiled brats.
Oh, that same Mayweather with those great American fans that booed him against Argentinean Carlos Baldomir? Mayweather hasn't fought in Michigan since he was a prospect.
Taylor doesn't get nearly the backing in Vegas or anywhere else that he received in Little Rock and Memphis. I don't consider fighting out of state in the US a fighter's backyard. Only his home state/city. Most Americans will see it that way...
Its is not the fans That decide fights.. it's the local establishment.. Fans were Booing Valuev when he beat Ruiz.. But you had to know if Ruiz didnt KO BIG Nick.. he didn't have a chance of winning...
Its funny aint it then that Americans can Unite against the rest of the world.. But will bicker over a state line..

I'll take that as being a semi-fair assessment. Though I'd say its the bad attitude and the arrogance that gets Floyd his nay-sayers, not where he fights.
That's correct.
That's why the competition is directly dependent on the amount of money paid for fights. Outside of the fan fights like Gatti/Ward......money attracts the finest fighters in the World. lol it's no damn secret that people in this business want to make money, and usually the best make the most money. Simple as that, there's really no other way to put it.
How much are Floyd and Oscar getting paid respectively? lol is there a correlation there? Are they not two of the best fighters in the sport? Oscar made his name as a draw being a great fighter in the U.S.A. Floyd is trying to exit his shadow. Where is this megafight taking place?
Thats fair enough. Personally, I'd say that every fighter should have to fight foreign every now and again, also that every fighter should have to step up to the plate and fight their nearest division rival according to the rankings, not the moronic belt rankings every couple of years too. It'd make champions more credible and it'd make boxing more exciting.
...Apart from American fighters? Its fair game for them not to leave the comfort of their own home because they are getting paid best there. Right?
That's correct.

It fits you perfectly, since you're bitching and crying about something thats not going to change.
Not really, considering a). You didnt use it in reference to me and b). You'd be hard pushed to find anyone who agreeds that I'm either bitching or crying about anything.
I'm trying to make sense of and show the hypocriticality of some of the people with their one-way-logic around here.
Sounds like a crying whiny kid screaming "its not fair!" :bottle: :bottle:
Get over it, thats just how it is.
I've never seen anyone yet use those bottle emoticons that wasnt a moron.
Any fighter who refuses to leave the comfort of home, no matter how good the resume is, will be criticized...
Including??
Floyd Wayweather Jr.. 37 fights all in the USA
Jeramine Taylor... 26 fights .. all in the USA
Chris Eubank made more money than any other fighter between 1990 and 1995 (£15million (after tax)) without stepping foot inside the US.
Not that it matters.
