I am watching television and they have a program on the first Olympics. I have mentioned Pankration before, but those that don't know...
Ancient Greeks had both Boxing and MMA; MMA was called Pankration.
The ancient Greeks, and Romans, loved their sports, but nothing like their love for combat sports. Of course, their version of Boxing, Pankration, and even Wrestling, were more violent.
"Quitting", no way.
No rounds, no draws, a winner must be chosen by KO.
Boxing was very popular, but Pankration was the most popular of all sports.
I love boxing, but I also love overall ability in fighting.
I am not a big fan of UFC, but PRIDE, I like. I still watch a lot more boxing than I do PRIDE, but love a good fight.
Anybody that is a boxing fan and hasn't seen the FEDOR vs. CRO-CROP fight, must watch that, and then tell me you are not a fan.
a down fall of mma is that stikers prevail and last longer .. a shooter or wrestler have to take a hell of a beating and to then just make a guy tape out after taking blows to the head from a guy like silva is nuts..it will all evolve back to boxing..kick boxing is underrated by all tho
It just means more fighters will have to concentrate on striking, which they are.
I prefer striking over the grappling.
I like Kick-boxing as well.
Boxing is still my favorite

Oh and boxing gloves are the way they are to protect the fighters hands, not for the other fighters safety. If safety was the reason for the gloves then they still need bigger ones.
Here's some modern day pancrase, it's pretty much mma but strikes have to be open palmed. This is where guys like Bas Rutten, Frank & Ken Shamrock and Genki Sudo made a names for themselves. At first PrideFC was formed to pit Brazilian Ju-Jitsu vs Hybrid Pancrase. It's pretty good stuff, but it will never replace boxing in my books.

You see, the gloves in boxing are the way they are because boxing has had to endure ring deaths and therefore refine safety regulations. We can't just go back to the bare knuckle days and put fighter's lives at greater risk because it would make it more exciting. Wait, translation, more exciting for blood thirsty neanderthals.
Eventually MMA will have to do the same. We all hate the thought of this, but one day somebody is going to die in a prominent MMA match. When this happens, there will be inquiries, and the sport will be hit with stiffer regulations.
FACT: more people die in car accidents every year.
FACT: more people die from alcohol use.
Fact: the ancient Greeks and Romans had better fights, more violent fights, more deaths, yet they accepted, and enjoyed the sport.
FACT: we are becoming pussies. Hey, this might not be bad if we evolve as humans. In order to evolve I would guess we would have to get away from sports that deal with physical contact, but I am not sure I can handle calling people "Stardust" and "Lillyfire."
Maybe I could handle this, but I would have to wait until my testosterone is shot or suffer serious withdraw.
The Greeks compared combat sports as a Metaphor of life.
if history repeats itself, then mma is going to dissapear for years and years, cause where the fuck has it been between the old pankration days and today?
Actually, MMA has been around for a long time, it just has not gotten the attention until now because it finally became more mainstream.
For it disappearing for years and years, where the fuck had boxing gone for so long, up until they brought it back?
Both never disappeared, but went into the shadows of society until light is shined upon it again.
not really .. boxing is more like street fighting.. called a "Fair one" in all the cities in the usa
I have seen fights with just fists, but more so with everything is used, after all, you weren't born with just fists as weapons; unless that is the way, they fight on your street. Most people I know that have gotten into fights use everything they have, except teeth biting and testicles shots since it is frowned upon and if you do that, people will step in and kick your ass.
OK I read plenty..In fact I read so much that when I come on a BOXING site I tend to to want easy banter and 1 paragraph discussions..
Not that there is anything wrong with writing a novel.. But I can assure you most readers on THIS Site dont have the attention span to read deep thought ptovking material.. and when they do they simply go to the home page..
Your second misconception is THAT I am not a student of the human condition..Which is why you make a comment such as me thinking WAR is new..
Now your writting might also be about war and statues and ancient cities of forgtten lore..
But All I am concerned about when I come here is Boxing.. And that is what I am responding to..
Sorry you felt the need to be defensive ...
LOL..no, my concern is about boxing. I think boxing needs to do something to get back in the spotlight. I love the attention the Oscar vs. Mayweather fight is getting, but that is one fight.
I want to see better competition and opportunity for fighters.
I want the sport to become more appealing, so they need to figure some things out on how to market the sport.
My problem with the glove size is that it causes less damage, easier to block punches, and nobody is going to want to pay for a sparring match. If boxers want bigger gloves, fine, but they are going to take a hit in the pocket.
I also think boxing needs to give yellow cards out like they do in some MMA fights. Yellow cards for giving a fighter a warning if the match is dull/slow/no action. Fighters must fight, the fans want this, they pay for it. If you don't fight, you should be fined, if not have your purse withheld until a hearing.
If MMA continues to grow, the athletes are going to go there, not boxing; you go where the money is.
Boxing needs to act now.
well i dont care if boxing is mainstream or not as long as the bring the good fight then i am cool with it.
anyway MMA taking over boxing will pressure promoter in making better fights so it all good the competition between them if you want to think like that
I don't believe this to be the case. I will always stick with boxing, I can't stand MMA and I am sure there are plenty of other people who feel same as I do. I don't know anyone who likes MMA but I know many who like boxing. The gyms in my area are full of young talent, boxing following and viewing is rising in this country so all this MMA will take over bullshit is pure hype nonsense.
Both are seperate sports that can coinsist with each other. Not everyone likes to see lots of rolling around floor action and elbowing a guy when he's down. I don't consider somthing like that a sport. History says MMA will die because the gladiators did....
That's great...that way of thinking will kill boxing as well; after all, boxing went on the "Down low" for centuries.
And yes, both can and will coexist with eachother. I am also one that doesn't like the rolling around on the floor and dull punches on the ground.
I prefer the sharp, powerful punches of boxing, but have to admit, boxing isn't what it used to be either. Competition isn't as great as it used to, and I hope they lower the glove size, especially after the move up in ounce that Vegas has forced.
History repeats itself.
MMA resembles a street-fight, much more than boxing.
I am not a big fan of the wrestling/grappling.
Boxing should lower the gloves to 4 oz, or no gloves at all.
Boxing will not die, but it will have to be competitive to keep up.
It will be like the NFL vs. MLB or NBA
It's a shame the NHL has taken a huge hit. I was never a big fan of the sport, at least not watching it on television, but I did hear it is the best sport live. NHL players are tougher than MLB, NBA, and maybe even NFL. I give them credit.
not really .. boxing is more like street fighting.. called a "Fair one" in all the cities in the usa
MMA is going to die when the fighter realize how much money the Exec are making and that they are making nothing.
Never has an MMA fighter made over a million bucks for a fight, yet the CEO's of these companys are bringing in the cash hand over fist.
When the backlash from this begins to happen you will see a lot of infighting among the top names in the sport and the level of fights will die off.
But you gotta consider the corruption in boxing that at this point is absent in MMA. How many boxers, who were champion level even, been broke before they even retired? And these guys made plenty of money. Tyson is the best example, he made over $100 million and was broke before he hit 40. But generally high level boxers have managers, trainers, and promoters all taking chunks of the purse. MMA guys often have it better, many manage themselves and run the gym they train at so they don't need to pay someone to do it. Also they don't pay a promoter because if they fight for the UFC, the matches are made by Dana White and Zuffa promotes them and does not take a % of the fighter's purse. Also a higher percentage of MMA stars have endorsement deals than boxers.
I don't think MMA will kill boxing just through the fans. Many boxing fans are not into MMA. The thing that could really hurt boxing, in my opinion, is if the better athletes choose MMA over boxing due to what I wrote above. Look at Don King for example; he is rich beyond belief. Name 5 boxers he promoted who kept enough of their money from boxing to just retire comfortably.....

I jumped on the MMA bandwagon thanks to the main stream media but it is played out now at least for me. I do think that PRIDE is better than the UFC. Boxing is making a come back and I think they will be doing a Contender season 3 on HBO with heavy weights. They are also showing fights on ABC. Tarver is going to be on the card. I see boxing making some big changes in the near future. They are already using instant replay in Jersey. Everyone is against the open card scoring and I think this will die. I hate that one.
MMA is just a fad and it will die out. MMA aint taking nothing over.
if history repeats itself, then mma is going to dissapear for years and years, cause where the **** has it been between the old pankration days and today?

Hmmm and what History are you basing this on...(not going to read your novel sorry)
Because as far as any history I know..MMA is new .. boxing as we know it is just a little over 100 years old.. In fact most organised sports were invented in the last 200 years..
SO what history are you basing this on? surely not EARTHS...
It's based on the history of Planet BS.
Bullshit...
BOXING will always be #1 for me! MMA - I Respect and occasionally enjoy but as a sport boxing IMO is far superior! Too many MMA fights are long periods of grappleing and little action - and i do realise these guys are excerting alot of skill and technique and appreciate that but i'll be honest it Bores me!

OK, this will be the last before I leave.
Obviously you don't read much, that is OK.
I guess by your thinking, War is new.
There are not only writing on boxing, wrestling, and Pankration, but their are statues and painints, like
