A few weeks back the best featherweight matchup of the year took place in Caly between Isreal Vasquez and Rafeal Marquez. The leadup to the fight was that of a cant miss fight of the year candidate and who the fuck could disagree with that pre-fight assesment right?
The fight was excellent while it lasted with both men having their moments but as we all know it got halted right before it really started to become one of those "fight of the year" candidates. No shame with Izzy he is a warrior who has proved it time and time again but for that fight to truly be consider one of the years best we desperately needed those championship rounds.
This past weekend we got to see the remtach between Oneil Bell and JM Mormeck...damn good fight to watch but boy was it sloppy in parts...or at least that was my take. I have read a lot of material suggesting that this fight is worthy of "fight of the year" talk...am I crazy to think that it shouldnt garner that sort of consideration?
On Staurday night we had a real showdown between two of the sports best, it was a very good fight too watch, a fight in which I thought JMM clearly won btw. The seventh round was the stuff that "fight of the year" fights are built off of and although I walked away completely satisifed with my $45 purchase I never said to myself "I just may have seen the fight of the year tonight."
What the fuck am I talking about?
All three fights have been blown up a bit bigger in the aftermath then I thought they needed to be. All three fights were good fights but a fight of the year has got to be a GREAT fight and I thought they all fell a bit short of that.
In 2 of the 3 fights it was almost as if they had been tagged "fight of the year" before they even touched gloves. We are all guilty of this especially me, my wife tells me that I say "every fight is going to be the fight of the year" or "every fight is a cant miss" ...we cult fans are sick arent we! But we are not blind right? I dont believe in the past few weeks I have seen the fight of the year or I sure as hell hope I havent-am I alone in thinking these above mentioned fights were good and not great or have I become too picky?
Are fight fans willing these fights to elite status or am I just being a snobby bitch? Be curious to here what some of you have to say!
Most box fans I know said the 2 best were Duddy/Campos...and Katsidis vs Earl
Haven't seen Duddy vs Campos but Barrera vs Marquez owned Katsidis vs Earl. Best fight i've seen so far this year no doubt!

Vazquez vs Marquez finished just when it was heating up, Bell vs Mormeck turned into a track meet the last 3rd, but, Barrera vs Marquez was defenitely fight of the year material!!!
all those fights had the potential, going in to be FOTY, and they were great fights. But a fight doesn't have to go the distance to be FOTY. Just look at classic great fights such as Hagler-Hearns.
Your absolutely right but the shorter a fight is the less chance you have for real drama to take place. We certainly saw this fact play out in Vasquez v. Marquez.

IMO all those fights were great and maybe FOTY candidates. I think us boxing fans love the sport and hope every fight is a FOTY candidate. So we might throw that phrase around a little too much. Im just excited because this year has started off good and there's even better fights coming up.
I think some fight fans, myself included, probably get excited at the prospects of amatchup that will become a close, give and take match that could be considered a possible fight of the year, and when that fight comes and CLOSELY resembles what we anticipated (usually not living up to the expectations, however) we generally are overly excited and start proclaiming 'fight of the year'; that is, until the next fight comes along and tops that excitement. In the end, 'Fights of the Year' usually end up being fights that were highly anticipated and met fans expectations of it (Gatti-Ward comes to mind) or fights that no one saw coming (the French guy vs Filipino guy from last year; I'm not even gonna try and type their names out correctly).
I agree tho, sometimes we get a bit out of hand proclaiming good, but not legendary fights as fights of the year. Besides, voting or proclaiming one should be left for the last quarter of the year, when we're down the homestretch, cuz at this stage of the game there is plenty of time for another fight to come along and blow everyone away.
