You guys should be excited about the fact that Darren Aronofsky is directing this.
He is an incredible talent and this could further Boxing's reputation as being the sport best featured on the big screen (from Million Dollar Baby to Raging Bull through the Rocky series and Somebody Up There Likes Me).
I agree...Aronofsky is underrated in the film world. This movie is gonna be GREAT!

Wow, really? The ring really has it's information messed up. That's odd.
"The Ring" (June) page 12:
...with Matt Damon playing Ward and Mark Whalberg in the roles of Dick Ecklund..
That it seems to..
I just read in the latest issue of The Ring that Damon will play Ward.
Personally, I think Whalberg has no business playing Ward.
Wrong everything.. Damon is a much better fit

It was just something someone posted in the thread.
But this confirms it:

Based on the life of boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and his trainer brother Dick Eklund (Damon), the Paramount Pictures saga chronicles their early days on the rough streets of Lowell, Mass., through Eklund's battle with drugs and Ward's eventual world championship in London.
Didn't you say Damon was going to be Ward? I don't really care but you shot the guy's head off over saying you were right...haha. Little guy didn't deserve that, he was right!
What's your source?
Check your shit, potna.
I was right. :killyou:

In that case I would guess it might be Damon as Ward.
Wahlberg is going to be Ward
Damon is Dick Eklund, ward's brother

Aronofsky in "Fighter" shape for boxing drama
Darren Aronofsky is in final talks to direct "The Fighter," a boxing drama reteaming "The Departed" stars Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon.

Wahlberg and Damon both hail from Boston, while Aronofsky and Damon attended nearby Harvard University.
The film, with its conventional narrative, would mark a departure for Aronofsky, whose 1998 breakthrough "Pi," acclaimed 2000 followup "Requiem for a Dream" and recent box office bomb "The Fountain" offered hallucinatory explorations of existential issues. Sources said Aronofsky is awaiting a script rewrite before signing on.
Some guy was beaten to death outside of a local bar a couple of months back.I read in the newspaper that Dicky and some of his crew were being questioned about the matter.I think the article's in one of my old posts if you want me to bump it.Im not sure if Wahlberg & Damon hung out in Lowell during the making of the departed.Good point though..I never thought of that..Most if not all of the departed was shot in Boston, right?
I would love you to bump it.
Yeah, I vaguely remember hearing something about him being in trouble again recently.
Did Damon and Wahlberg hang out in the area when they were filming The Departed?

My friend met Ward in DC. He was their with Duran, Frazier, Spinks,Pryor and some others. Genius brought me pics with em but forgot to get them to sign his program he brought me. He is going back next year and said he will. He is the manager for the Temptations and got to hang out with all the fighters at a charity event. He said Duran spoke good English which surprised me. He said Duran was the nicest and that Ward was kinda soft spoken and quite.
They should start filming in Lowell soon. It's going to be weird to have Wahlberg and Damon hanging around my hometown.Strange timing too!As far as I know Dicky Eklund is still a suspect in a man's death recently.

I forgot about the brawl part. I may try to find that DVD. Dicky got the short end of the stick when it came to names it seems.lol
lol...I think you're right!
Yeah, I got that film on dvd; made it part of my Micky Ward fight collection. It shows Micky in one of his early fights and also Mick getting into a brawl during a fundraiser to get his brother out of jail. Pretty cool stuff.

A movie about Dickie Eklund would be worth a watch. The guy took SR Leonard the distance and was an interesting cat. He is much more vocal than Mickey. The years he spent addicted to crack and being in and out of jail, makes for good TV. He was on an HBO documentary Cracktown or something shortly after Mickey made his comeback. It was really interesting.
