Everyone just wants to see wars these days. Everyone just wants to see guys trading knockdowns, gettin KOd, bleeding all over each other, and trading punches.
Nobody likes the sweet science any more. I do and im sure many of you do but the average joe doesnt. Like Floyd Mayweather. He schooled Baldomir and didnt get any credit at all. Mayweather gives guys boxing lessons.
Not every fight has to be a war. Boxing isnt just wars. Thats why I think its dumb when people get mad because a guy dances around and boxes. Thats part of the sport as well. But some guys do fight like pusys sometimes.
but people just dont enjoy the sweet science these days
i dont agree that PBF should get a lot of praise for 'outboxing' people, and ko artists or brawlers should be frowned upon.
Boxing is about inflicting damage upon our opponent and getting him out of there. Who said it should be about winning on points. It is entertainment after all, most people prefer watching 6 rounds with a KO at the end than Mayweather running around the ring for 12 rounds and boring people to death with a points win.
Boxing isn`t dead, there are just more sports for people to watch than there used to be.
One champion per division would clear alot of problems up for boxing...if not all of them..
Boxing is a business, so are all sports, anything where money changes hands will be business orientated....promoters and fighters want the most money possible, which is why many shy away from fights they might lose or leave them fights to the end of their careers....
Real boxing should be about two guys fighting on the cobbled streets with no gloves on...going 200 rounds smacking the crap out of eachother.....it is now gradually being turned into a gay sport full of greedy, media hungry losers who spend more time coming up with funny quotes than actually getting down to some good old fashioned fighting.
boxing is dead because it's no longer a sport. its a business. there are no more athletes, only businessmen. theres no glory, only money. theres no fame, only controversy.
sanctioning bodies, mandatories, robberies, snoozers, promoters, padded records, protected fighters, fixes, greedy and whiny fighters, and there is absolutely no healing going on.
boxing is dead. all we watch now are just business transactions.
Hopefully not dead, but i see you point. What we wants is better matchmaking. I think the mandatory is the way so see the best against each other. No champ should duck a mandatory for fighting "Hollywood-fighter" for $$ and still be a champ. We wants to see the best against the best. We wants to see a fight with out for sure to know the outcome. Thats why live sports is the most thrilling to watch and instantly would prevail a lot of $$$ for the hole sport/boxing.
I want to see
Calzaghe - Kessler,
Lacy - Mundine
Bute - Froch
Klitschko - Maskaev
Hopkins - Tarver
Taylor - Wright
Mayweather - Margarito
And you name it!!!
(Remember to watch the Kessler - Andrade fight on the 24. marts on HBO. Then you have to add Kessler to your list. Kessler simply is the real deal - a Viking Warrior)
Boxing obviously aint dead.
Just not anywhere near as popular as it used to be.
A heavyweight star would help.i heard mike tysons makin a comeback muhahahahaha
No, its just these guys who fight at a STAND STILL and claim they are boxing.
Or guys who throw 10 jabs a round and claim to have outboxed their opponent.
Thats what people hate.
A good boxing match can still be a war.
Vazquez-Marquez was a Boxing match in every sense of the word. That wasnt a brawl at all. It was a war, but not a brawl.
Wright-Taylor is another example. Those guys Boxed for 12 rounds and it was wildly entertaining.
Thats what people want and expect. Not guys like Klitschko who will stand there and not do anything, not even attempt a counter. Or guys like Hopkins that do nothing BUT wait for the counter...
yup vasquez marquez was a boxing match and was very entertaining
You fucking stupid idiot.
Hang on man, I think T.E.S has a point. While what you pointed out is correct (boxing does have geat athletes and tons of guts) you have to wonder - do the casual fans see it? Probably not. Unfortunately, the casual fan does see the negative things ianwigley pointed out. The casual fan doesn't appreciate what a fighter has to put himself through and focuses only on the end result. This would explain why most people know who Mike Tyson is (even before all the controversy) but have no idea who Pernell Whitaker is.
But the main problem is, boxing just isn't part of pop culture. There's no link, no connection. Think about why people love football, baseball, and basketball. Most people played at some time in their lives and fall in love with the sport. Not true for boxing. There is no little league boxing or high school/college boxing. This explains why UFC is becoming so popular; wrestling is a huge hs/college sport and kids can relate to UFC - there's a natural progression from wrestling to ufc.
Regarding the original post by souza, I agree; the casual fan only wants to see wars (certainly the diehard fans appreciate a good technical match).
I find myself feeling the same way about UFC; I watch a little every now and then, but once these guys get themselves on the floor and start elbowing, huggin, and kissin each other, I get bored and find something else to watch. I realize and appreciate what they are doing takes tons of practice and skill, but to be honest, it bores me to death. OTOH, some kid who spent his whole life wrestling might really appreciate that part of UFC. So, I suspect the people who don't appreciate the technical fights in boxing simply never boxed. So, what's the solution? Getting kids boxing! Make boxing more popular for kids and teens. Otherwise, no matter what boxing does (better fights, no more sanctioning bodies, no bullshit, etc...) it still won't matter.
boxing is dead because it's no longer a sport. its a business.
Would you say that the NFL is dead? After all the NFL is more a business than any other sport, the teams are no longer called "teams", they are "franchises", the whole game is set up around advertising revenues, in maybe 25 years it has risen from a sort of fringe sport to completely eclipse traditionally astronomical events such as the World Series and they've done it through following aggressive business models. If boxing is dead, what is alive? UFC? Now that's an impressive business model, and successful because of it. Perhaps boxing is suffering because it isn't a business.
On the other hand I feel that boxing is making something of a comeback. It's getting network TV exposure, regular people are talking about fights (Mayweather vs De La Hoya is the one I'm talking about) in a way I haven't seen since the days of Tyson... it's looking pretty good. And this is in Canada! In Britain boxing is huge, in the US it is huge. That's the thing about boxing - it never really goes away.

Good points. So far its been a good year of boxing and its only gonna get better, we'll see how it goes.

You fucking stupid idiot.
No more athletes - see Erik Morales, MAB, DLH, Floyd Mayweather for starters. Could you deprive yourself of fatty food, alcohol and sleep for months on end? Could you get up at 5am daily to pound the sidewalks and then box for hours on end to make sure you're ready to get your chin smacked a couple of hundred times in 45 minutes?
No glory - see Micky Ward in round 3 of Gatti - Ward II getting his face punched to fuck, hitting his head against the corner, and then get up and wave Gatti on, begging him to hit him more, begging for glory. Walking forward to an untimely death, forward every time...begging for glory. That's all he's ever known.
Only money - see Gatti -Ward I, II, III. See Ali fighting in the late 70s when he was shot, see all Duran's fights, see Bobby Chacon, see the reason DLH is fighting Mayweather - What the fuck does DLH need money for? He's a multi millionaire businessman, so why the fuck is he climbing throught the ropes on May 5th? It sure as heckfire ain't money.
Next time, post something sensible, or keep your fucking trap shut.
if your asking why boxing is dead, your pretty much the reason why!well the souly m'baye fight last night was 2 very technically sound
boxers going ast it over 12rds, it wasnt a war or a brawl but it was a great fight.
as for mayweather schooling baldomir. it was expected because baldy was way
below his class, baldys only decent win coming against zab judah who isnt the
most focused fighter & he got an injury of sorts to his eye which impaired him
it was just as expected as floyds dominance of gatti, so why be impressed
Yeah Izzy and Marquez put on a rare performance. You don't find those types of fighters much these days. There's only a handful of fighters left that are there to give you your money's worth. Sad thing is, people hate on them.
I don't care if people say boxing is dead. To me it isn't, everytime you see a fight like the Marquez-Vasquez fight you get excited about the sport. Both fighters showed good boxing skill especially Marquez, and both liked trading punches which made for a very enertaining fight. Not every fight is going to be entertaing. All fighters have different styles and styles makes fights.

Let's get real. Everyone loves everything you mentioned. People can appreciate the sweet science. Can they get attached to it over the above mentioned? Most likely not. Anyone will choose KOs and everything you said over watching someone hit and not get hit while running around the ring to a decision. It's just natural and everyone I think is like that. You think someone will say they prefer that over watching someone get KOed? That's the drama and what makes boxing what it is and has been since it came to fruition <----Oh my, I never thought I'd ever use that word.
Boxing isnt dead just the heavyweight division. Its only dead to the average joe who only thinks of boxing by what they see from the heavys. We are in the greatest era of little men that boxing has ever seen but America doesnt care much.
