I feel John Ruiz should be given some respect. He's been gone awhile after coming off of a controversal decision loss vs. Chagaev (who will face Valuev in his next bout). I have noticed that Ruiz alterred his style for the Toney fight, and minus the fake knockdown (Toney stepped on his foot), the fight was close. Ruiz came from behind after being rabbit punched and thrown down to the canvas by Andrew Golota to win a close decision (he landed some HARD shots late in the fight). He showed LOTS of heart in that fight. Ruiz rallied and won several rounds in a row after being behind. He is also one of only four men to knock down Evander Holyfield (something Lennox couldn't do in the 2 previous fights they had). He is the only Latino Heavyweight champion ever, and a 2 time one at that.
Give the guy some respect. Even though his style wasn't exactly popular, he brought some controversy to the ring which I thought was entertaining, and watching one of his fights you just never knew what might happen.
I hope to see him in the ring again. He could give any HW in the sport today trouble. He did NOT deserve to lose the decision against Valuev. He is one of the few top guys in the division that you can tell has not juiced. He has taken the hard road throughout his entire career, and has been beaten up by boxing writers. And for all he has accomplished after all of that BS - he has my respect.
I think Golota won that fight.......But i did read although never watched that he could have gotten a shitty decision loss to Valuev.I also read that larry Donald should have gotten the nod against valuev too....but this thread is not about that....Anyway Ruiz was solid but boring and sucky....the most exciting parts of most of his fights were listening to Norman Stone tell him "Come Johnny go fuck this motherfucker up" between rounds IMO.
1. the only controversial thing about the chagaev fight is the fact that some dumbass judge was stupid enough to score the fight for ruiz. even ruiz's camp admits he lost.
2. i will give him respect for getting in the ring. but beyond that, i have no respect for him as a boxer and even less respect as a man.
3. if theres one thing boxing doesnt need anymore of, its controversy. controversy in boxing is not entertaining.
4. you always knew what was gonna happen in a john the bum ruiz fight: clinching and booing. nothing else.
5. he absolutley deserved to lose the valuev fight. some1 who hurts the division, the sport, and has a style like that has no right to hold a belt.
6. why in the name of all fuck would ANYONE want to see that pile of shit in the ring again???
6 points proved you have no idea what ur talking about. now you just sit there and take it.
All of those points are technically the same response reworded, and you are entitled to your opinion.
I know exactly what I am talking about and will stand by my original post.

I agree. he has changed his style in his last few fights probably for the fans and it has cost him. he does have heart and has beaten some descent fighters. I'll give him that much
I give the man respect..He never had a lot of skill, but he made the most out of the little he had.A man that was probadly more suited for the "club scene" became a two time HW champ.
ruiz was the most protected champs ever... he fought nothing but undeserving King fighters(fres, golota, rahman) and when he did fight someone else he lost(RJ, toney, valuev)... he was boring as hell, talked a lot of crap and never backed it up... for the entire time he was champ he never fought any of the other champs(byrd, wlad, VK, lewis, brewster) or top contenders(sanders, peter, brock)

Listen Stoney I thought they banned your ass.
Fuck off Norm!
Yeah,I can respect his career. He got the most out of his limited talent.
But I'm glad he's gone,hopefully forever...
I have never forgiven him for causing me to miss a main event.I don't recall the fight, but he was on the undercard. His fight was so boring I fell asleep...and woke up the main event was over.
Good riddence....
i dont agree...i dont think Ruiz deserves respect. I mean the guy lost to Roy Jones Junior who is basically a middleweight. A true heavyweight should never lose to someone who is naturally 50 pounds lighter. I thought Ruiz was okay until I saw that fight, then i lost all respect for him. he's just too lazy, lazy jab, lazy footwork...i dont like him as a boxer at all..
speed>power
boxer>puncher
I think Ruiz is annoying as hell, but overall I guess he does deserve some respect, I wouldn't watch any of his fights but I respect him.

Yeah I can see where you're coming from...
He was exciting sometimes...
Like here.
We've all seen that video a million times. Yes he got caught. That was the point when Tua was a machine and arguably he would have done that to anyone at the time. Any HW in the past 10 years who got caught with one of those shots would have reacted the same way. Ruiz has one of the best chins in the entire division.
